FIG. I FIG. 2.
hil I will IIJI' I IIHI JOHN TOKABYK, OF MOND MIN E, ONTARIO, CANADA.
HORSE-DETACHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed January 5, 1918. Serial No. 210,562.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN TOKARYK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Mond Mine, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in horse-detachers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a hitching member for horses adapted for arrangement in a stable or similar place whereby the horse may be automatically unhitched in the event of a fire in the building.
A further object of the device is to provide a horse hitching means adapted for automatic unhitching in the event of any unusual movement of the horses head such as thatoccasioned by great fright from any cause such as a fire.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an automatic unhitching device for horses that is easy and inexpensive .to manufacture but which possesses great strength and durability and is adapted for freeing the animal in the case of fire for preventing it from being consumed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device positioned in its operative arrangement.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken upon line 1IIIII of Fig. 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, a bracket 10 is provided of T-shaped formation having a base plate 11 adapted to be fixedly secured to a mount such as a post or partition 12 by means of bolts 13 and arranged with a horizontally positioned projecting arm 14.
A cam 15 arranged with a substantially cylindrical head 16 at its opposite end is provided for suspension through a central slot 18 of the said arm 14. A leaf spring 19 is secured as at 20 to the upper end of the plate 11 and passes through an enlargement 21 of the slot 18 adjacent the base'plate 11. This spring 19 is bowed outwardly within the slot 21 in engagement with the adjacent inner face of the cam 15, maintaining the said cam within the slot 18 with its head 16 overlying the forward portion of the arm 14, it being understood that the said head laterally projects from the body of the cam 15.
The free end portion 22 of the spring 19 is upturned with an intermediate curved portion 23 slidably positioned on the plate 11 at a point beneath the arm 11- while opposite overlying lugs 2% are carried by the plate 11 adjacent the lower end thereof. A chain 25 or other attaching means is secured to the cam 15.
From this detailed description of the invention it will be understood that with the bridle of the horse secured to the cam 15, a sudden pull exerted upon the chain 25 by the tossing of the horses head or an eX- treme pull rearwardly will forcibly withdraw the head 16 of the cam 15 through the slot 18 against the action of the spring 19, thereby freeing the animal and permitting him to escape from the burning building. The strength of the spring 19 will be sufficient to hold the cam 15 attached to the arm 14 under all ordinary strains incident to the hitching of a horse to the said cam and only an excessive pull upon the cam 15 will remove the same. It will be also seen that on account of the cylindrical shape of the cam head 16 that a. downward pull will be less effective in withdrawing the cam from the slot 18 than an upwardly and rearwardly inclined movement such as that exerted when the horse suddenly jerks his head upwar lly as this movement will exert a leverage impulse upon the spring 19 with the head 16 rotating a partial revolution and the outer end of the slot 18 which engages the cam serving as a fulcrum. A strong and efficient hitching device is pro vided which will automatically operate to release the animal in the case of such an emergency as herein contemplated.
Vhat I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a T-shaped bracket having an attaching base and a projecting arm arranged with a slot therein, a cam normally positioned within the said slot and resilient retaining member for the cam carried by the plate.
2. A hitching device comprising a T- shaped bracket having a mounting plate and an outwardly projecting arm adapted for horizontal positioning when the device is operatively arranged provided with a slot therein with an enlargement adjacent the said plate, a cam removably arranged Within said slot having a laterally projecting cylindrical head normally seated upon the said arm, a positioning spring arranged within the said enlargement of the slot normally contacting the cam adj acentethe head thereof and means carried by the cam at the end thereof opposite its head adapted for attachment with an animal.
3. An attaching device comprising a mounting plate, an outwardly projecting arm carried by the plate having a slot therein arranged with an enlargement adjacent the plate, a cylindrically headed cam depending within said slot, an animal attaching ring at the lower end of the cam on the opposite side of the arm from the head of the cam and a resilient retaining member tensioned against the said cam and the outer side of the enlargement of said slot.
5: this patent may be obtained for 4. An attaching device comprising .a mounting plate, an outwardly projecting arm carried by the plate having a slot therein arranged with an enlargement adjacent wardly bowed portion arranged within said slot enlargement in normal contact with the outer wall of said enlargement and the said cam, the said spring further having a free end portion slidably posltioned upon the said plate adj acent its lowerend and limit ing lugs for the spring oppositely carried by the said plate overlying the free end portion ofthe spring. p
In testimony whereofI affix my signature. JOHN TOKARYKi v Washington, D. 0."
