. application filed July 9,1. 117/ 'sera1:a0.iv9;43
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GYURO E. B. JAKO- rn'rs, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook a-nd ,.Sta t-e of'Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inPermuta- (ion-Padlocks, of which'the following is specification. I p This invention relates to new and useful improvements in permutation pad-locks.
Theprimary-obj ect of the invention is the provisionof a permutation pad-lock possess- ,ing great strength and adapted for operation in. connection with permutation members, the structure being easy and inexpenslveto manufacture.
The further .ob ec t of the device is to pro-.'
- vide a .permutation pad-lock having a seper-able shackle the same being maintained in. its locked position when desired by means ofla plurality of permutation members rele a sable by a personlwho is familiar; with the combination thereof.
A still further, object of the invention the provision of a permutation pad-lock whichlcannot be picked nor released by an unauthorized person, the same requiring a knowledge of the combination of permutation members W1th which the same is provided in order to unlock the d'eyice.
In thedrawing forming a part of this application and in which like reference char- 1 acters'dcsign'a'te correspondingpartsthroughvice partially broken away illustrated in its out the, se eral views,v
Figure lis an elevatioiial view of the delocked arrangement. v
Fig.2is a sectional view taken upon line IIII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device partly broken away.
Fig. 4. is a detail perspective View of the main shaft member of the lock and a portion of the shackle support.
Fig. 5 is a similar perspective View of the bolt member of the device and Figs. 6 and .7 are end views of the two different forms. ofpermutation members employed with the device.
Referring more in detailto the drawing ashaft 10 is provided centrally projectingv from a circular disk or head 11 formedat one, end of the device upon one arm 12,;of a
shackle section 13. J A similar head 14;. -nor 'mally maintained opposite the head 11 is provided with a bolt 15 rectangular cross Specification of LettersPatent-t ters such as the letters 27' herein shown,
upon the bolt 15 adapted to. project radially "within the slot 16 and at which time it will- -the same diametrical planes of, the 'shaft 10.8

section and adapted for slidable reception with n a longitudinal side-slot 16 of the shaft 10. I
The head 1 1 is carriedby an arm 17 hav- 6'0 inga' shackle section 1.8 at its opposite end,
b th of the shackle sections "13 an'dlS being "substantially U-sha-pcd and forming the re calving opening 19 of the lock when the bolt 15 is operatively positioned within the slot '16 and with the free end 20 of th bolt in. substantial engagement centrally with the head 11.
The shackle section 13 has its opposite sides .21 provided with 'sockets 22-adapted for the reception of dowel pins 23- carried by the opposite sides 24 of the shackle section 18. "A plurality of permutation members 25 and a slightly different'siugle peirnnita tion'me'mber '26 are journal'ed upon 'theshaft 10- and are provided with desirable chara which by means of the-arrangement hereinafter set, forth control thel loc'kingand unlocking of the'device during the action .of apredetermined turning of the permutation ,7 members.
Radially-projecting lugs-:28 are suitably positioned opposite each other v, upon the shaft 10' while similar-lugs 29 are provided from the shaft 10 when the bolt is seated be noted the lugs 2Sand 29 are arranged", in i Each of the permutation members 25-and 26 is of cylind'rical construction, being 1a a maybe journaleduuponl the; shaft the-bolt 15 is seated :withinqi-th slot.
Opposite radial slots 31 and 32 are provided" in the opposite sides of the members 2-5 adapted for permitting the members 25 to be moved over the lugs 28, receiving the said lugs 28 Within the members 25. The slots 32 of the members 25 and 26 are of greater width than the slots 31 whereby the members 25 and 26 may be turned upon the shaft 10 bringing the slots32 into ahnement with the slot 16 of the shaft and thereby permitting the free longitudinal movement of the bolt 15 outwardly and inwardly v ofand'within the slot 16. 'It is noted that the lugs 29 of the bolt 15 are of greater dimension-s than'the lugs 28 carried by the head 14. It will be seen that the three mem- ..bers 25 and the end member 26 may be read.-
ily positioned upon the shaft when the' bolt is removed while the slots 32 may then be positioned in alinement with the slot'lfi permitting the insertion of the bolt 15 within the slot 16 bringing the dowels 23'within the sockets 22 and the shackle in its? closed operative position. the members '25 and 26 in any direction, the combination will be broken and the bolt 15 will be locked by the permutation members against bein Withdrawn. Upon again setting the combination, the slots 32 of all hf'the permutation members and 26. will be again brou ht intq alinement with each other outward y. of the slot "16 permitting the withdraws! of the bolt 15 and the free i a passage of the iugs 29 of the bolt 15 through the said slots 32.v It. is obvious that 'any dosirable characters 27 may be empl'o ed with any of the same arranged outward y of the slots 32 'nd when the same are arr'anged in .a straig t line and in line wih such an indicia as the points 33 upon the heads '11 and 14, the combination will be 1n its releasing position for permitting the same movement of the bolt 15.
I familiar therewith,
v .Thecomplete operation of the device will be apparent from thisv detailed description thereof it being seen ',that a permutation pad-lock is arranged giving great security and which is eas ly operable by a person What I claim is =-g l 1. A look comprising cooperating shackle members provided with heads, a slottedshaft carried by one of said heads, a bolt carried bythe other head. adapted for reception within the slot of said shaft, lugs By turning.
shaft, lugs on the bolt of tgreater dimensions than the lugs on the sha and arranged to lie in the same transverse plane as the slotted-shaft 111 s when the bolt and shaft are in assemble position, a plurality of ringlike permutation members having laterally centrally apertured annular chambers, said permutation members being mounted on the shaft for rotation thereon with the lugs of the bolt and the lugs of the shaft positioned within the permutation members when in locked position, said permutation members having radial side slots of greater dimen sions than the lugs-of the bolt and adapted to engage the boltlugs outwardly of the shaft slot when the shackle members are in unlocked position.
2. A lock'of the type described, including cooperatin shacklemembers having interfitting soc et and dowel connection, and
adapted to form a keeper for the reception of the lock-attaching means, said shacklemembers being provided with circular heads, one of said shackle-members being provided with a slotted shaft having lugs on the op posite sides thereof and the other shacklemember being provided with a bolt received by the slot of said shaft, said bolt having lugs of greater-dimensions than the lugs on the shaft and arran ed to lie in the same transverse plane as t e shaft lugs when the members of the lock are assembled, a plurality of ring-like permutation members having laterally centrally apertured annular chambers, said permutation members dimensions than the lugs of said bolt and adapted to engage said bolt lugs outwardly of the shaft-slot when the device is in its unlocked position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
