Description

-G. W. FlX.
STANDARD HOLDER FOR WAGONS,
APPLICATION FILED MAY 32. 19W- Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
awwmtoz e1 to 14mg Giza/"0'6 W K GEORGE W. FIX, OF LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA.
STANDARD-HOLDER FOR WAGONS.
Application filed May 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn W. FIX, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lexington, in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Standard-Holders for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in standard holders, and more particularly the device includes new and improved means for detachably connecting standards with the bolsters of a wagon, so as to securely hold the same in place, in such a manner that they may be quickly detached therefrom when desired.
Another object of the invention is to pr0- vide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of one end of a bolster, showing the standard applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section, and
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the rotatable locking member.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. The numeral 1 designates one end of a bolster of the con ventional type, such as is ordinarily employed on wagons of the character to which the invention applies, the bod of the wagon being positioned on the bolster as is obvious. The outer end of the bolster 1 is provided with a semicvlindrical aperture 2 therein, and positioned around said end of the bolster is a substantially U-shaped metal strap 3 that is secured thereto at its opposite ends by means of rivets 4, or any other desired type of fastening means, the base portion being positioned from the end of the bolster, so as to form a standard receiving member thereon.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Serial No. 168,177.
The standard 5 employed in this device is of the conventional type, the same being provided with a reduced lower end 6, that is adapted to be positioned in the standard holder at the end of the bolster, the inner side of said reduced end being adapted to lie flush with the outer end of the said bolster- This inner side of the standard is provided with a semi-cylindrical aperture 7 therein, that is adapted for alinement with the aperture in the end of the bolster, when said standard is positioned in the holder.
Rotatably mounted across the end of the bolster 1, is a semicylindrical rotatable looking member 8, that is mounted on a horizontally extending axis 9, which has its opposite ends mounted through openings in the sides of the standard holder 3. One end of said axis is bent laterally to form an operating lever 10 having a handle 11 on the outer end thereof, and said lever is adapted for engagement with a segmental arcuate rack 12 carried by the outer adjacent side of the standard holder, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
In operation when it is desired to place the standard in the position shown in Fig.
1 of the drawings, the lever 10 is so moved that the rotatable semicylindrical locking member 8 will be positioned in the aperture 2 in the end of the standard, the flat side thereof being disposed in a single plane with the outer end of said bolster. The standard is then placed in the holder 3, the reduced end thereof being positioned in the same, and the aperture in the inner side of said reduced end of the standard will hence be disposed in alinement with the aperture in the end of the bolster, in which the locking member is positioned. Upon operation of the lever 10 through the handle 11, the member 8 is rotated, from within the aperture in the bolster, to within the aperture in the standard, hence securely locking said standard in position, and preventing the same from becoming disengaged from the end of the bolster. The lever 10 is inherently resilient, so that the same is adjustable on the segmental rack 12, to securely lock said lever in various adjusted positions, to hold the semisylindrical locking member either within the end of the bolster, or in operative position within the the aperture in the standard.
This device afiords an easy and quickly operated means for securely locking the standard to bolsters, in the type of wagon to which this device is applicable. Once the standard has been placed in position, upon the operation of the locking means, the same is securely held therein, and. will be prevented from casual disengagement, such as the, same are subjected to. The device is very simply constructed, and may be very economically manufactured, and is applicable to various types of wagons.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the-method of operation will be readily apparent to those: skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which-I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire tohave it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are, within the scope of'the claim appended thereto.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as-new, and desire to secure by Let- The combination with a wagon bolster having, a standard holder connected therewith, of a standard adapted to be positioned in said hQlder; and having one side lying flush with the end thereof, said adjacent portions having ,alining: semtcylindr-ical apertures therein, a rotatable Semi cylindrical locking member carried by the bolster, an operating'lever therefor, and, a segmental rack to hold said, lever in various adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto. h
