To all 'whom t may concern:
BeV it known that l, JOSEPH lW. F ERGU- soN, a citizen of the United States of America,.residing at Rockwood, in the county of Roane and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Trimming and Cleaning Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to trimming machines used in making yseamless stockings andthe like, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient brush attachment for loosening and brushing off all lint or other extraneous matter from the seam of the knit fabric.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efficient trimmer whereby the cutting edges of the trimming knives will have a natural clearance while being operated.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in general of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

adjacent the bed-plate 1 and carries Van eccentric pin 4, which pin 4 engages a pitman rod 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This pitman rod 5 carries a socket plate 6 at the outer end thereof, as shown clearly in detail in Fig. 10, and this socket plate 6 is provided with a ball-receiving socket 7 into which ball-receiving socket 7 lits the ball joint S of the journal pin 9 carried by the rock arm 10. This ball joint 8 is held against removal from the socket 7 by means of a gripping screw 11 extending through the outer end ofthe socket plate 6.
A standard 12 Vis supported upon a bracket 13 carried by the bed-plate 1 and this standard 12 carries a brush-supporting arm' 14, which brush-supporting arm 14 is provided with an integral depending sleeve 15 through which the brush-carrying shaft 16 extends. This brush-carrying shaft 16 carries a brush head 17 at the lower end thereof, which brush head is provided with a pair of segmental brush ngers 18 arranged diametrically with respect to each other. Suitable bristles 19are carried by the brush fingers 1S, as shown clearly in Fig. 11 of the drawings. A crank arm 20 is connected to the upper end of the brush supporting shaft 16 and this crank arm 20 is held in engagement with the shaft 16 by means of a set screw 21. An operating link 22 is heldin engagement with the crank arm 20 by means of a set screw 23 and this link 22, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 6, is connected at its outer end to the connecting screw 24 carried by the rock arm 10. This rock arm 10 is provided with a stub finger 25 extending substantially at right angles to the main arm of the rock arm 10, and this stub finger 25 carries aclamp 26, which clamp 26 engages a knife-operating link 27. The outer lend of this link 27 is pivotally connected to a knifepperating arm 28, and this knife-operating arm 28 is carried by a rock shaft 29, as shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
A stationary knife support 30 is connected to the standard 12 and this stationary knife support 30 comprises a substantially arcshaped knife holder within which is mounted a stationary knife blade 31, shown clearly inFig. 4 of the drawings. This knife blade 31 is firmly clamped within. a clamping socket 32 byvmeans of a clamping screw 33. A suitable handle 34 is carried by the blade 31 for the purpose of permitting the same to be adjusted in the proper position within the knife holder 30. This stationary knife support is provided with an'overhanging arc-shaped arm 35 which arm carries a journal 36 at the outer end thereof for supporting the rock shaft 29. A swinging knife support 37 is supported upon the rock shaft 29 and a knife-engaging hanger 38 is adjustably mounted upon the support 37 and is provided with'a longitudinally-extending slot 39 through which a binding screw 40 passes for holding the adjustable hanger 38 in an adjusted position upon the support 37. A blade-gripping sh0e`41 is carried by the adjustable hanger 38 and this shoe 41 is provided with a spring jaw 42 which is adapted to firmly clamp the swinging knife blade 43 in a set position upon the shoe 41. The knife blade 43 is preferably dove-tail in cross-section for fitting in the knife-blade receiving socket 44. A suitable clamping screw 45 is employed for locking the spring jaw firmly around the knife blade 43. A suitable adjusting screw 46 is carried by the upper ends of the support 37 and fits within a suitable receiving notch 47 formed in the hanger 37. This adjusting screw 46 engagesV the upper end of the hanger 38 for the purpose of permitting the same to be adjusted to a fine degree of accuracy. A binding screw 48 is carried by the adjustable hanger 38 and engages one end of the rock shaft as 29 shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings.
A guard plate 49 is carried by an arm 50 which is supported upon a clamp -51 carried by the standard 12 and -this clamp 51 ts Vdirectly below the clamp 52 of the stationary knife-blade support 30. This clamp 51 and the clamp 52 are anchored together against independent rotation by meansof a locking screw 53 and this locking screw 53 passes through a plate 54 anchored upon the clamp 52 by means of the screw 55.
A suitable push-back plate 56 is suspended below the blades of the cutting knife, as shown in Fig.v 3, upon a depending pin 57, and this plate 56 is engaged by means of a coil spring 58 similar to the structure shown in the patent to W. J. Steere, No. 916,799, issued on March 30, 1909.
The operation Vof the device is as follows:
The arm 28 is oscillated from side to side, thereby rocking the rock shaft 29 and swinging the swinging cutting blade 43 ,over the cutting edge 43 of the stationary cutting blade 31 and severing the fabric at a proper or desired point.
Simultaneously with the operation of theV rock shaft 29 it will be seen that the link 22 will also be operated for rotating the brushsupporting shaft 16, thereby bringing the bristles 19 of the brush head 17 over the edges of the fabric which has been cut for the purpose of loosening and brushing olf all y lint or other extraneous matter upon the seam of the knit fabric, such for ,instance as upon the seam which has been made at the toe of a seamless stocking and the like.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient means has been produced for effectively Voperating the brush and causing the same blade from wearing or rubbing upon the body of the stationary blade 31. This arrangement will add considerable to the life of both the swinging blade 43 and also the stationary blade 31.
What is claimed is 1. In a trimming and cleaning attachnient, a trimming means, of a brush support, a brush-carrying shaft extending vertically through said brush support, a brush head carriedl by the lower end of said brush-supporting shaft, said brush head provided with a plurality of radiating bristleesup'porting clamps, bristles extending downwardly from said clamps, a crank arm connected to the upper end of said brush-supporting shaft, an operating link connected torsaid Vcrank arm, a rock arm carried by said support and engaging said link for operatingsaid link Y and rotating said brush, a pitman Vrod connected to the outer endV of said rock arm, and
means for actuating said pitman rod.V

In a. trimming and cleaning attachment, a trimming means, a brushsupport, a brush-carrying shaft extending vertically through said brush support, a brush head carried by the lower end of saidy brush-supporting shaft, said brush head provided with a plurality of radiating bristle-supporting clamps, bristles extending downwardly from said clamps, a crank arm connected to the upper end of said brush-supporting shaft, an operating link connected to said crank arm, a rock arm carried by said support and engaging said link for operating said link and rotating said brush, a pitman rod connected to the outer end of said rock arm, said rock arm provided with a stub linger connected thereto, a rock shaft, trimming means connected to said rock shaft and a link connecting said stub linger and rock shaft for rotating said rock shaft as said rock arm is operated.
