TRIMMER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forrning part of Letters Patent No. 257,751, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed March 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. PARKER, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Sche' nectady, in thecounty of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimmers for Sewing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of cutting attachments for sewing-machines which are adapted to trim the edges of knit fabrics while the same are being stitched and the invention consists in certain peculiarities in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a plan of a sewing-machine provided with my improved trimming attachments. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an adjustable arm which is attached to the sewing-machine head, and is provided with a sleeve or hearing for the re-' ception of a rock-shaft that carries at one end a movable knife. Fig. 5 is a plan of the presser-foot and lower knife, and Fig. 6 is an end view of the same partly in section.
Like letters indicate like parts in the several views.
The letter A denotes the work-bed of the machine, and B is a stationary arm, which is affixed thereto and provided with a head, B, to which is attached the slotted bifurcated presser-foot G, that has on one side an inclined arm, 0.
Secured to the bed A is an adjustable plate, 1), one end of which has the form of an inclined plane and carries a knife, D, the cutting-edge of which is arranged beneath and adjacent to the'inner side of a slot or opening formed in the presser-foot for the reception of a movable knife that acts in conjunction with the stationary knife-for the purpose of trim min gthe edges of the fabric in a line parallel with the line of stitching.
Attached to the head 13 is a bracket, E, which carries an adjustable arm, E, the end of which is provided with a horizontal sleeve or bearin g, E ,for the reception of a rooleshaft, F, to one end of which is secured the movable knife F,which is adapted to vibrate in contact with the edge of the stationary knife D in the slot formed in the horizontal portion of the presser-foot.
It will be observed that the plate D, to which the lower or stationary knit'e,D, is attached,is provided with slots a a for the passage of the screws 1) b, by means of which it is secured to the work-bed A, so that by simply loosening said screws the plate carryi-n g the stationary knife D can be adjusted so as to bring said knife into proper relation with the movable knife F, attached to the rock-shaft. The knife D is secured to theinclined portion of the adj ustable plate D by means of screws 0 0, so as to be readily removed when required.
The bracket E, which carries the adjustable arm E, is secured to the head B by means of screws d d at one end, the other end of the bracket being provided with a shoulder, e, that rests upon a lug,f, formed on the head B, the parts being thus secure] y connected. The arm E is adjustabl y secured within the bracket E by means of set-screws gg, so that the movable knife F, attached to the rock-shaftF,wl1ich is supported in the sleeve E of said arm, as before described, may be adjusted to the proper relation with the stationary knife D to secure an effective cutting action. The movable knife F is secured to the end of the rock-shaft F by means of a screw, h, so as to be readily removed when desired.
To the end of the rock-shaft F opposite the knife F is attached a lever, G, which is secured to the shaft by means of a set-screw, 'i, thatpasses through acollar, G',Whl0ll is formed on the end of said lever. This lever is connectcd bya link, H, with a curved arm, I, that is adjustably secured to a rock shaft, K, by
means of set-screws 7s 7;, which pass through the ends of a hub or collar formed on the end of said arm. The rockshaft K is arranged transversely near one end of the bed A and at a right angle with the rock-shaft F, which it is adapted to actuate through the medium of the arm I, link H, and lever G. The rockshaft K forms the pivotal arms or journals of the levers L M, which are preferably cast therewith, the said parts being arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At each end of the shaft K 35 spring, t, which is coiled around the shaft F is a cup-like depression, by which it engages with the conical screw-bearings m m, which are supported in lugs formed on the bed-plate. By this means the bearings m m maybe adjusted so as to take up the wear of the shaft K as may be required. The upper lever, L, which is formed on or attached to the shaft K, has at its free end a downward-projecting arm or needle-bar, L, to which the needle 0 is attached in the ordinary manner. If desired,
vthe needle-bar may be formed separate from the lever L, and yet be arranged so as to be operated thereby. The lower lever, M, passes through a slot formed in the bed-plate A, and
is provided at its end with a slot or loop, 12, which engages with a sliding block, 8, that is loosely attached to a crank-pin or eccentric on a disk, N, which is attached to the shaft of thedriving-wheel P, said shaft beingjournaled in suitable bearings formed in a bracket which is attached beneath the bed-plate.
It will be seen that the rotation of the wheel P and disk N actuates the lever M, so as to impart a rocking motion to the shaft K, thus vibrating the lever L, and thereby operating the needle, the motion of the rock-shaft K being simultaneously communicated by means of the arm I, link H, and lever Gr to the rockshaft F, thus causing the movable knife F, attached to the shaft F, to vibrate in contact i with thecutting-edge of the knife D, and
thereby trim the fabric in a line parallel with and close to the stitching. The movable knife F is held to its proper relation with the cutting-edge of the knife D by means of'a spiral between the collars G and G to one of which itmaybesecured. Bylooseningtheset-screws c and 7c the movable knife F may receive any desired adjustment.
It will be observed by. reference to Figs. 5 and 6 that the presser-foot O is slotted longitudinally for the reception of the movable knife F, which vibrates therein when the machine is operated, a rounded notch being formed at the lower end of the slot for the passage of the needle,which is caused to reciprocate therein simultaneously with the vibrations of the knife. The inner side of the presser-foot consists of an inclined arm, 0, which is arranged above the edge of the stationary knife D and holds the fabric to the action of the knives, as shown in Fig. 6. In practice a suitable feed mechanism is employed, and also such other devices and attachments as are usual in machines of this class.
The construction of the various devices as above described is such that the necessary adjustments may be readily made, or the parts detached when required, thus rendering the operation of the machine simple and effective.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the head of a sewing-machine, of an adjustable arm having a sleeve or bearing adapted to receive a rockshaft, to which, is attached the upper or movable knife, substantially as described.
2. In a sewing-machine trimmer, the combination, with a rock-shaft provided at one end with a movable knife and at its opposite end with a lever, of a bent arm adjustably secured to a rock-shaft arranged at a right angle to the knife-carrying rock-shaft, said bent arm being connected with the lever by means of a link, and the various parts being adapted for joint operation; substantially as shown and described.
3. In a sewing-machine trimmer, the combination, with the bed A and adjustable plate D, having an inclined portion provided with stationary knife D, of the slotted or bifurcated prcsser-foot 0,'having an inclined arm, O, arranged above the end of said stationary knife, and a movable knife, F, adapted to vibrate in said slot in contact with the cuttingedge of the stationary knife, substantially as described.
4. In a sewing-machine trimmer, the combination, with the head 13, slotted presser-foot O, and stationary knife D, of the adjustable arm E, supported in a bracket attached to said head and provided with a sleeve or bearing, E the rock-shaft F, supported in said bearing and provided with a knife, F, adapted to vibrate in the slotted presser-foot in contact with the cutting-edge of the stationary knife, and means for actuating said knife-carrying rock-shaft, substantially as described.
5. In a sewing-machine trimmer, the combination, with a rock-shaft, F, supported in a suitable bearing and provided with a knife, F, and a spring, t, adapted to hold said knife in contact with a stationary cutter, of an adjustable lever, G, attached to .said shaft, a rockknife-carrying shaft and provided with an adjustable arm, I, a link, H, connecting the arm I and lever G, and suitable mechanism for actuating the shaft K, substantially as described.
6. Ina sewing-machine trimmer, the combination of the bed A, arm B, having head B, slotted presser-foot .0, attached thereto and provided with inclined arm 0, adjustable plate D, having an inclined portion provided with stationary knife D, arm E, adjustablysecured to the head B, and provided with sleeve E knife, substantially as described.
