To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, linnnnn'r M. STUnGis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Paper Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet paper reels, of that class exemplified by my Patent No. 1,096,071, issued May 12, 1914, and my object is to generally improve, simplify and cheapen the construction of reels of the class above identified, and to provide a reel which is eflicient in operation and on which a paper roll can be secured easily and quickly. Another object is to produce a roll holder for toilet paper,-of ornamental appearance and of compact construction and light weight.
To these ends the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

- In the drawings, a bracket comprises a wall plate 1 and a forwardly projecting hinge post 2 and latch post 3. The hinge post is provided with an opening l coinmunicating with an opening in the bushing 5 within the hinge post, and extending through the said post and bushing is a vertical pivot pin 6. The latch post has an opening 7, in line with the opening a.
A hollow cylindrical reel 8, is provided at one end with diametrically opposite external ribs 8 and a side opening 1). It also has a Journal opening 10 at one end and an opening 11 and a radial slot 12 at its opposite end.
A partition 13 for the chamber of the reel, is located near the slot 12, and is secured in position by peripheral lugs let, which extend through and are riveted to the reel. The partition has a central hole 15, an opening 16, and a radial arm 17 produced by I bending the material cut to produce the opening 16. The partition is also provided with an arm 18 projecting in the opposite direction to arm 17, and with an opening 19.
Pivotally mounted as at 20 on arm 17, so as to swing longitudinally of'the core through the slot 12, is locking lever 21, provided with a notch 22 in one edge to permit the lever to swing down until it lies wholly within the circumferential plane of the reel and thus offer no obs'ruction to quickly and easily fitting a roll upon the reel, and said lever is provided with a tooth 23 projecting through the opening 16 in the partition 13.
A lever-locking frame 24, consists of a longitudinally extending bar provided at one end with a head 25 and at its opposite end with an arm 26 having a trip lug 27.
The head 25 isadaptecl to fit snugly in the reel and rest upon the lower portion thereof so to be capable o't tilting, as indicated by dotted lines Fig. 2. The head 25 is provided w1t-h a central opening 28, and above and below said opening is provided with smaller openings 29 and 30, the former to receive the tooth of the locking lever and normally prevent operation of the same from the position shown in full lines, Fig. 2. The opening 30 is to accommodate the arm 1.8 projecting from the partition 13, and in one margin of said head 25 is formed an opening 31 registering with opening 19.
' A slidable U-shap'ed trunnion 32 extends through the openings 19' and31 of partition 13 and head 25 respectively, and projecting from one arm of said U-shaped frame is'a trunnion pin 33, the same extending through the opening 11 in the reel and engaging the locking opening 7 of latch post 3. The other arm of the trunnion frame is in the form of a circular head 34 provided with a central opening 35, and with a notch 36 for the accommodation of the locking tooth of lever 21, and an opening 37 for the accommodation of the arm 18 of partition 13. It will be noted that the head of locking frame 24 is confined between plate 13 and the head 34 of the slidable trunnion frame, and that lug 27 of the locking frame is opposite the opening 9 in the reel.
A shaft 38 is pivoted at one end on pivot pin 6 and hingedly operable in slot 4. Said shaft extends longitudinally of the reel and through the journal openings 10 and 15 thereof, and the openings 28 and 35 of the locking frame and slidable trunnion frame respectively, and mounted upon said shaft is'a coiled spring 39, secured at one end upon arm 18 so as to be capable of sliding thereon.
The opposite end of the spring is secured to an inwardlyprojecting arm 41 of a dished disk 40 secured rigidly on the shaft 38, the dished face of the disk being opposite the adjacent end of the locking frame so that one cannot by applying end pressure on the reel, effect sliding movement thereof sufficient to disengage trunnion 33 fromv opening 7, as such pressure will result in the free end of the frame 24 engaging. the dished face of the disk and being deflected inwardly until such movement is arrested by the impingement of the end of said frame on the flat or inner portion of said disk. If the disk was perfectly fiat it might be possible under continued pressure applied as explained, to work the end of the frame downward and thus permit of movement of the reel sufficient to disengage the trunnion 33 from the opening 7 and the tooth of the lever from the locking opening 29. This would permit the lever to swing downward to a horizontal position and thereby permit the roll of paper P, to he slid off the reel.
The disk 40 is provided with a peripheral flange 43 of approximately ninety degrees in length, and the reel is provided with an inwardly projecting lug 44 normally held by the power of the spring 39 against'one end of said flange 43 as indicated by dotted lines a, Fig. 7 lVhen the reel is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 7, the spring 39 is tensioned and when about threefourths of a revolution has been completed, the lug strikes the opposite end of the flange to arrest the turning movement. The spring reverses this movement when unopposed.
The end of the reel adjacent the hinge post is provided with a radial arm 45, having a lug 46 to overlap and engage the cylindri al roll of paper P, mounted upon the reel. The roll is provided with a kerf 48 to receive-the lever 21 and be held thereby on the reel, and with a pair of kerfs 49 to rcceive the lugs 8 and be held by the latter and lever 21, against turning movement on the reel. Assuming the parts are in normal or operative position, it will be understood that they are as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 but with the roll turned backward a fourth revolution so that the lever and arm 45 project horizontally rearward (see Fig. 1). With the parts as explained the free end of the paper hangs downward (not shown) from the front side of the roll and to detach the paper along the customary perforated line, not shown, the operator pulls such free end imparts rotation to the reel in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 7. In this action the reel will usually turn nearly three fourths of a revolution before the spring 39 offers sufficient resistance to effect the severance of the paper along the perforated line mentioned. If it does not, the severance of the paper will be efiected the instant the lug 44 has been rotated from the position a, to the opposite end of the flange 43, which end thus limits the forward rotatable movement of the reel. unrolled piece of paper is effected, the spring reacts and revolves the reel back to its original position, that is until arrested by contact of the lug 44 with the opposite end of the flange 43. In the unwinding of the paper. the lug 46 will swing through the path of the paper in the neighborhood of As the detachment of the the perforated portion thereof and either bends the paper out of its path or starts the detaching of the paper by tearing it at the engaged margin in line with the perforated line of the paper. In the return movement of the reel the lug 46, which is now beneath the next sheet of paper, follows the same and maintains its free end disengaged from the roll, so that when the roll comes to rest, this end of the paper will be caused tohang free in properposition to be grasped for the next operation of the device.
When all of the roll has been removed, the paste-board core 51, upon which it was wound, will be torn off the reel so as to'expose the opening 9. The reel is then turned forward about a quarter revolution to give convenient access to opening 9 and to dispose the lever 21 and the locking frame verticaliy, as shown in Fig. 2. The operator by inserting a pencil or other device in opening 9, is enabled to apply downward pressure on lug 27 and thus rock or tilt the locking frame to the position shown by dotted lines Fig. 2, as the spring 39 offers but little resistance to such rocking action. The rocking action disengages the locking opening 29 of the head of said frame from the toothed lever and thus permits the lever to be swung down until its tooth is out of alinement with or above notch 36. lVhen this is accomplished the reel can he slid bodily toward the hinge post until the trunnion 33 is withdrawn from the opening 7 in the latch post, it being noticed by refer ence to Fig. 2, that when the frame 24 was tilted, the slidable trunnion was partly withdrawn from the opening '7, and that in the bodily movement of the reel the depressed end of said frame was free to slide past the lower edge of the dished disk. While the roll is held in its repressed position with the trunnion withdrawn from opening 7 the reel is swung forward upon the pivot 6, and when it is released, the spring 39 compressed by the sliding of the reel as explained, readvances the latter and restores the frame 24 to the position shown by full lines. With the lever in the horizontal position shown by Fig. 8, a new roll of paper can be slipped over the free end of the reel, and locked thereon by swinging he lever forward in slot 19- and the kerfed nd of the roll. The operator then applies pressure on the end of the slidable trunnion. and slides the same back and at the same time swings the reel back until the trunnion passes the front end of the latch post, which then holds the trunnion repressed until the latter registers with and snaps into the opening 7. As this is accomplished the roll is released and the spring 39 rotates it back a one-fourth revolution to its initial position.
From the above description it will be apparent that l have produced a reel for cylindrical rolls of toilet paper, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the object of the invention, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the same. it will be apparent that it is susceptible of modification without departing fronr the principle of construction involved or sacrificing any of the advantages of theappendeu claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a shaft, an oscillatory reel journaled at one end thereon, a partition in the reel forming a journal for said shaft, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projecting through one end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a locking frame engaging the trunnion frame and the partition, a spring for rotating the reel. backward and for holding the trunnion frame with its pin projected from the reel, and a stop to prevent material sliding movement of the locking frame under pressure imposed directly thereon by the partition.

8. In a device of the character described, a shaft, a reel journaled thereon, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projecting through one end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a frame engaging the trunnion frame within the reel, a spring for rotating the reel backward and for holding the trunnion frame with its pin projected from the reel, a stop to prevent material sliding movement of the locking frame under pressure imposed directly thereon by the partition, and means whereby the locking frame can he tilted out of the path of the stop to permit the reel to be slid on the ,shaft.

In a device of the character described, a shaft, an oscillatory reel journaled at one end thereon and provided in its side with an opening, a partition in the reel forming a journal for said shaft, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projecting through one end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a locking frame engaging the trunnion frame and the partition and provided with an arm accessible through said opening in the side of the reel for effecting tilting of the locking frame, a sprin for rotating the reel backward and for holding the trunnion frame yieldingly advanced and applying pressure for maintaining the trunnion frame with its said arm adjacent said opening, and a stop to prea shaft, an oscillatory reel journaled at one endthereon, a partition in the reel forming journal for said shaft, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projecting through one end of the latter in alinement with said shaft, a locking frame extending longitudinally within the reel and provided with a head fitting loosely on the shaft between said partition and the inner end of the trunnion frame, a disk secured on the shaft within the reel and between the adjacent end of the latter and said locking frame, a spring coiled around the shaft and anchored thereto at one end and to the partition at its opposite end and adapted for rotating the reel backward and applying endwise pressure 011 the trunnion frame for holding the same yieldingly advanced and the head of the locking frame against said partition and the opposite end of said frame in the path of said disk, and means whereby the locking frame can be tilted against the resistance of the yieldingly advanced trunnion frame, until withdrawn from the path of said disk.

In a device of the character described, a shaft, an oscillatory reel journaled at one end thereon, and provided at its opposite end with a radial slot, a lever pivoted to and within the reel and adapted to project laterally beyond the side of the reel or longitudinally beyond the end thereof, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within'the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projected through the slotted end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a frame engaging the trunnion frame and the lever for holding the latter locked when projecting laterally from the reel, a spring for rotating the reel backward and for holding the trunnion frame with its pin projected from the reel and also for causing said frame to apply pressure on the locking frame, and means accessible through the side of the reel when not equipped with a roll of paper, for tripping the locking frame to permit the lever to be swung to its longitudinal position.
In a device of the character described, a shaft, an oscillatory reel journaled at one end thereon, and provided at its opposite end with a radial slot, a lever pivoted to and within the reel and adapted to project laterally beyond the side of the reel or longitudinally beyond the end thereof, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projected through the slotted end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a frame engaging the 1711111111011 frame and the lever for holding the latter locked when projecting laterally from the reel, a spring for rotating the reel backward and for holding;
. frame, means accessible through the side of the reel when not equipped with a roll of paper, for tripping the locking frame to permit the lever to be swung to its longitudinal position, and a stop on the shaft within the reel and in thepath of said locking frame to prevent unlocking movement of the locking frame, or material sliding movement of the reel on the shaft.
8. In a device of the character described, a bracket, a shaft hinged at one end to the bracket, a spring reel journaled on the shaft, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projecting from; one end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a lever mounted within and projecting out of the reel, a spring actuated frame for locking the lever in a laterally projecting position, and a stop for preventing sliding movement of said locking frame and the unlocking of the lever.

In a device of the character described, a bracket, a shaft hinged at one end to the bracket, a spring reel j ournaled on the shaft, a frame rotatable and slidable on the shaft within the reel and provided with a trunnion pin projecting from one end of the reel in alinement with said shaft, a lever mounted within and projecting out of the reel, a spring actuated frame for locking the lever in a laterally projecting position, a stop for preventing sliding movement of said locking frame and the unlocking of the lever, and means accessible through the side of the reel when containing no paper, for tipping said locking frame out of the path of said stop and thereby unlocking said lever. to permit the same to be swung to parallel relation with the shaft.
10. In a device of the character described, a shaft, an oscillatory reel journaled at one end and provided with external ribs at one end for engaging radial kerfs in the corresponding end of a roll of paper to be mounted on the reel, said reel also having a radial slot in its opposite end, a lever pivoted within the reel for operation in said slot and adapted whenextending longitudinally of the reel through said slot to permit the roll of paper to he slipped upon the reel until the said kerfs are engaged by said ribs, said roll having a radial kerf in its opposite end to receive said lever when swung to a laterally projecting position, means to lock the lever in said last-named position to hold the reel in engagement with said ribs, and upon the reel, a trunnion frame journaled and slidable on the shaft, and interlocked lever When the same is projected laterally, and means accessible through the side of the reel when lacking a roll of paper, for trip- 10 ping said locking means.
