COMBINATION SWING-RADLE AND CRATE.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patentes-Mar. 1e, 191s.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWELL E. VHET- s'roNn, a citizen -c the United lStates, residin Tat. Poland, in tli'e'county of Mahoning, tate of Ohio,'have invented anew and userid Combination` Swing-'Cradle and Crate; and I d o-hereby declare Athe following to be a. full, clear, and-exact description. of the invention, suoli as will enable others 4skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to make and 'use lthe same.
This invention relatesfto an improved 'combination swing and crate structure, and 4an ob]ect 'of the invention is to provide a device of' thisA kind which is convertible -froin one to the other. A further objectof our longitudinal side 'pieces hingedly united and'. two end pieces hingedly connected to the opposite. o ai the side pieces, whereby eithe u' sw 'liair as shown in Figur-e1 or as lqshown in Figs. 5 and 6 may be con t A. further-.o 'f invention is the provision of an- 'proved brace, utilized as shown in Fig. 1, for holding'thelongitudinal side braces relative 'to each other, when the .parts are arranged to he used as a swing chair..
In practical elds the 'details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within Vthe scope iss of what is claimed. The invention comprises further features and combination 'of parte as hereinafter set forth shown inthe-drawings and claimed.
In the drawings I Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the combined cratei and swing constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation show-v ngrthe swing chair utilized as a lawn swing.
Referringm'ore especially to the drawings 1, -2, 3 vand 4 designate four longitudinal side' members, which are hingedly. united as shown at 5, 6, and 7.' The meinhers 1 the invention is .to rovide a device of this kind comprising 'swing and 22 have 'notches 2 7 and rod 33 may 'pass through and 4 may in turn he hingedly united as shown at 8, when the said side-ineinbers are arranged to be used asa crate. Hingedly connected to both ends of the side member 2, as shown at 9 and 10 are endf pieces 11,
'which are providedwith headed studs 12.
The end pieces 11l are provided with ladditional studs 1 3 and 14. The opposite ends of theside n i'enibers orpieces 1, 3 and 4, are provided with flanges 15, A16' and 17, whichoverlap .the end piece, particularly when the structure is arranged to be used as a shipping crate. However, when the structure is used as a swing chair, the flanges 15 are allowed to reinain in overlapping enl gagernent with .the end pieces, andare held in such overlapping engagement by the piv-l oted hooks 18, which engage the headedstuds 14. When the structure is used as a chair the' side pieces 3 and 4 are arranged as shown at Fig. 1, consequentlyT they require reinforcing braces 1 9. .The ilanges 16 and, 17 of the side pieces 3 and 4 have headed'studs20. These bracesconsist of the end and intermediate sections and 23, and also the turn bucklsec- The adjacent portions' o end and intermediate section have reduced threaded extensions 25, which areengaged by the turn buckle sections 24. The intermediate sections of both braces have notches 26, and the outerl ends of the sections 21 28. When the side pieces 3 and 4 are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the braces are applied, whereby the notches 26' may engage the headed studs the- 20 ofthe flanges 16 of the side-'piece 3,
17 and the end pieces 11 respectively, after which the turn buckle sections may heset up and tightened so as to lock and reinforce the side pieces. The V-shaped suspension rods 29' are provided with hooks 30, to engage the heads of studs 12, whereby by means of the springs 30L (which engage the eyes 31 of the rods 29) the swing chair may be'suspended on a porch. Upright supports 32 are provided. The supports consist of twosections 33 and 34 coupled t ogether by the threaded sleeves 35. The sections 34 have bases 36', while the upper endsof the sections 33 have overh-anging hooks 37. A rod 38 may be arranged s0 that its hooks 39'may engage the hooks 37'. This the eyes 31 of the V-shaped suspension rods 29, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the swing chair may be suspended between the supports 32, thereby allowing the swing chair to' be utilized as ,a
lawn swing, as shown in' Fig 2. When thel structure'is utilized as a shipping crate, the
-Various parts, (which belong to thedevice' as a swlng chair) may. be 'packed in 4the crate. Inpther Words, the supports 32 may he knocked down, and their parts togetherwith the V-shaped suspension rods 29 and maIxZv be placed in the crate.` he invention having been set forth what the rod 38, the springs and the braces 19 is claimed as newr and 'Useful isr- 1. In a combined' swingchair and shipping crate, a plurality of flat sections seF quentially hingedly united 4whereby the sec tions may be arranged in stepped relations and adjustable locking reiirtorcing braces for the opposite ends ofthree of 'the see' tions, and crate end sections hingedly united Vto the opposite end of one of the first secn tions. f
2. In a combined swing chair and shipping` crate, a plurality of dat sections se quentialiy hingedly united, whereby the sech tip'ns may .be arranged in stepped relations,`
one of said sections havingV a pair of end jsectionshingedlv' connected to its opposite ends and provided with headed studs,-twof adjacent flat sections having their' opposite ends provided -with headed lugs and adj'nstH able braces connecting .the headed lags of the adjacent ends of two of the fiat sections and the headed studs of the end sections, one of the first sections acting as a riser of the stepped relation having' latch'connec tions withsaid end sections Ina combined swing cha-ir and ship-- ping cra-te, a plurality of flat sections sequentially hingedly united, whereby the sections maybe arranged instepped relations,
one of saidV sections having apair of end tions with said :end4 sections, said .braces comprising a .plurality of axially aimed members, turn biicklesfor axiallyronnect.
ing said members and adjusting them, one
toward the other, and means for suspending the swing chair.
In testimony whereof-Thane .signed nay 'l name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing Witnesses.,v I 'v i NEWELL-E. NVHETSTONE. Witnesses: l C. C. RUDIUAUGH,
