Application led Hay 10, 1915. Serial No. 27,000.
To all 'whom it may concern:
provide a construction which will permit the making ofidcntication marks on that face of the lm lopposite the backing sheet; and another object of the'invention being to provide for making identification marks on those films which are held in what is known as film packs, where the films are individually transferred from an exposure ch amber to a storage or dark chamber.
To these and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of vwhich will be hereinafter described the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings y Figure 1 isa perspective view of a film constructed in accordance with the present invention,- showing the backing sheet arranged on one side thereof and the identification-producing means on the other side;
Fig. 2 is a view of the coated side of an exposed and developed film, showing the identifying portion in the posl tion in which it is exposed;
Fig. 3 is a section 'through the film as shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view of the exposed and developed film from the uncoated side thereof, showing manner to have such'identifying portion reproduced properly on a print made from the negative; f
Fig. 5 .is a section through the film as folded in Fig. 4; and- Fig. 6 is a sectional view through the film while the latter is mounted upon the backinw sheet.
he film of the present invention is shown as mounted u lon a backin sheet which is claimed broa 'in an ap 'cation filed by me on the 7th ay of Apri 1916, Serial No. 91,601, said appllcation also illustrating and claiming a lm ack in which the illustrated embodiment o Amy present invention is adapted to be used. It is understood, how-` ever, that the present invention is nottion #91,601, nor is this invention and shown in exposure portion 4 of exp identification producing medium is in thev the identifying portion folded in av cures the hmlt-A ved to the use ofthe specific backing sheet herein shown, but claimed in my applicalimited to the i'ilm pack disclosed in my aforesaid application #$91,601.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the backing sheet having a pulling tab 2 connected therewith by strips 3.- Arranged on one side of this backing sheet is the film, the coated face 4a of the which is disposed away from the backing sheet 1. At one side of the exposure portionb4, the lm is provided with an identifying portion 5 which preferably has a sensitized coating y6L atf on that face of the film opposite the coated face Preferably this identifying portion is conn cted to the main body of the film or exposure portion 4 by a weaker portion, produced, in this instance, by providing a slot7 in the film. This slot also serves as a window through which the identifying matter 8 on the identifying portion 5 may be exposed for printing, without making it necessary` to expose such identifying matter through the main or body portion 4 of the ilm, this being effected by bending the identifying portion 5 over the opening of the film at the weakened portion so that the identifying portion 5 will cover the opening 7, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing.
Any' suitable means may be employed foi` exposing the identifying matter 8 upon the osure ortion 5. In this instance, the
form of a strip of carbon paper 9 secured on that side of the 'lm opposite the backing v sheet over the identifying .portion 5 to one side of the exposure portion4. Over this identification producing medium v9 a strip 10 of thin red paper may be arranged, so as to protect the carbon sheet. The paper 10, the carbon sheet 9, and the film may b cured together by a binding stripv 11 which passes over the edges of said parts and selatter tok the backing All ofthese parts may have their secured edges curved in order to facilitate the turning of the parts around the guide which is usually arranged between .the exposure and the storage or dark chamber of a film ack.
In using the invention,the film wit the backing sheet 1 lies within the usual exposure chamber, while the strips 3 are turned around the partition between the exposure breaking of the carbon paper 9 over the ing an identifyin identification-producing portion 5, thus admitting light to the sensitized coating 6a on said identifying portion 5 to expose the matter inscribed on the strip 10. When the film is developed, the inscription on they identifying portion 5 will not lie in such a position that it will read properly on a positive produced from the negative, and for this reason, the identifying portion 5 is bent or turned over the slot 7 in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 5, thus permitting a direct reading reproduction of the identifying matter with the production of a. positive picture from the negative, and permitting the coated side 6 of the identifying portion 5 to lie disposed in the same direction as the coated portion of the body portion of the film.
The identifying matter Will appear in the finished print in White letters on a black background.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A film for photographic cameras having an identifying portion at one end se arated from the body of the film by wea er portions which permit the ready folding of the identifying portion lonto the body portion.
2. A film for photographic cameras havportion separated from the body of the fi by a slot and foldable over said slot.
3. 'In combination with film for photographic cameras, a strip of carbon paper secured over said film on the ex osure side ing medium in strip form secured over said film on the exposure side thereof and to one side of the field of exposure, and a strip of paper secured over said identificationproducing medium. v
5. In combination with a film, and a backing sheet secured on one side of the film, an identification-producing medium in strip form arranged on the other side of the film to one side of the field of exposure.
6. In combination with a film having one face thereof coated with sensitive material except near one end which is uncoated and provided with a slotvbetween the coating and the uncoated portions, the film beyond said slot being coated on the opposite face, a backing sheet arranged on said opposite face, and an 'identification-prodursing mcdium in strip form secured over the uncoated portion on the first mentioned face of the film. i
7. A Elm for photographic cameras having an exposure portion and an identifying' portion, each provided with a sensitive coating, the coating for the exposure portion being on the opposite Side of the film from that of the identifying portion.
