PHOTOGRAPHlC-PLATE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,068, dated October 25, 1898.

Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. LINDSAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington,in the District of Columbia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Plate Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.

My invention relates to the art of photography, and has especial reference to plateholders designed for the use of plate-wrappers for protecting photographic plates against light While being placed in and removed from a primary plate-holder and until they can be taken into a dark room for developing; and it consists in certain improvements, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure l represents a plan View of the supplemental plate-holder with a plate and its wrapper in the holder; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same von an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a plan view of the primary plate-holder, the supplemental plateholder in the primary holder,and a plate-wrapper in the latter holder with its front partly removed; Fig. 4, a vertical section of the same on an enlarged scale; Fig. 5, a plan view of the supplemental plate-holder, showing a plate as it appears after exposure, the front of the plate-wrapper having been removed and the cover for the supplemental plate-holder being inserted by the slide of the holder; Fig. 6, a vertical section of the same on an enlarged scale; Fig. 7, a plan view of the supplemental plate-holder with its cover applied thereto; Fig. 8, a vertical section of the same on an enlarged scale; Fig. 9, an enlarged section of the rear end rail of the frame of the primary plate-holder, showing a spring for retaining a photographic plate in the holderv in rear of the supplemental plateholder; and Fig. l0, an enlarged section of the4 primary and supplemental plate-holders, showing the means for securing the latter to the former.

Reference beinghad to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates a photographicplate holder, which in the application of my invention I designate as the primary plateholder, B a supplemental plate-holder, and C a lightproof plate -wrapper, such as that shown, described, and claimed in the patent granted to me on the 19th day of October,'l897, and numbered 592,148.

The primary plate-holder is of the usual construction, except as to several details, which will be clearly elucidated. First, in my improved plate-holder' a compartment a is formed to hold a plate l) for exposure in the usual way, and this plate is secured in the holder by a spring c. (Shown in Fig. 9.) Second, at the front end of the plate-holder, in the rail thereof and crossing the holder, is a revoluble shutter CZ, which is of a little greater length than the width of the slide D and the grooves c e in the side rails of the frame of the holder, and the shutter is provided with springs ff to press it against the slide when being inserted or against the under side of the part g ofthe end rail, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, to exclude light and to facilitate the entering and passage of the pulling-piece h of the plate-wrapper when placed in position in the primary plate-holder, with said pullingpiece extending beyond the end of the plateholder.

The supplemental plate-holder B consists of a frame having a iiexible back 1l of lightproof material-such as black enameled or coated cloth, thin rubber, or paper-secured thereto and is provided With an opening between the side and the end rails of the frame to receive a photographic plate B', inclosed in a light-proof wrapper C. At the lower corners are xed bars 7c 7a to secure the plate in the holder, and at the upper end are bars Z Z, pivoted at one end to admit the plate to the holder, and are then moved down, as shown in Figs. l, 3, 5, and 7, to secure the plate in the holder at its upper end. These bars ZZ are placed under the upper corners of the pulling-piece h, /as shown in Fig. 1, so as not to interfere with the removal of the detachable front m of the plate-wrapper, and the lower ends of said bars engage recesses n u to secure them in position. The plate is fur- IOO ther secured against moving in the holder by suitable springs n n', as shown in Figs. l, 2 4, 5, and S.

The supplemental plate-holder is secured to the primaryl holder by suitable detachable connections, such as E, (shown in Figs. l, 3, 8, and 10,) in which an ordinary glove-fastener is used for illustration, and on the face of the supplemental plate-holder a ooatin g o of suitable adhesive substance, such as glue or other Well-known adhesive, is applied to secure the cover F, of light-proof paper or other material, after exposure of the plate.

The cover F is applied to the supplemental plate-holder by wetting the coating o before putting this holder in the primary plateholder. The exposure having been made, the cover is folded at one end and applied to the slide D and inserted through the outer end of the primary holder, as shown in Fig. 5. After the cover has been pushed in the full length ofthe supplemental holder the primary holder is Withdrawn from the camera, the slide D removed, and the cover F pressed down upon the coating o until it has adhered thereto, When the supplemental holder is removed from the holder A and put in a suitable reoeptacle, such as a case or a box, and subsequently developed in a dark room.

The groove e in the sides of the holder A should be a little higher than the face of the holder B to prevent the cover F sticking to the adhesive coating o as the cover is being inserted, as shown in Fig. l0.

Having thus fully described my invention, What l claim isl. A photographic-plate holder, in combination With a plate, a plate-Wrapper and a supplemental plate-holder containing said Wrapper.

2. A photographie-plate holder, in eombination With a plate, a plate-Wrapper, a supplemental plate-holder having an adhesive coating on one side, and a cover.

3. A primary photographic-plate holder and a supplemental plate-holder provided with a light-excluding back, in combination With a Cover and means for securing the cover to the opposite side or face of the supplemental holder.

4. A photographie-plate holder consisting of a frame provided with a light-excluding back and a coating of adhesive material oovering the margin on the opposite side or face of the frame, in combination with a light-excluding cover applied to said coated side of the frame.

5. A photographic-plate holder, in combination with a plate, a plate-Wrapper, a supplemental plate-holder and means for securing the supplemental holder in the primary holder.

6. A photographic-plate holder, in combination with a plate, a plate\vrapper having a removable side or front provided With a pulling-piece, a supplemental plate-holder having a light-excluding back, a cover for said supplemental holder and means for seen ring said cover to the opposite side thereof.

7. A photographidplate holder provided with a compartment to receive a photographie plate, in combination With a supplemental plate-holder contained in the primary holder, a plate-wrapper contained in the supplemental holder and a Cover for the supplemental holder.
