UNITED STATS FRANK KUHN AND JAY A. HAND, (3F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS TO AMERICAN ELECTRICAL HEATER COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
COMBINED HANDLE ATTACHMENT AND NAME-PLATE FOR ELECTRICALLY-HEATED INSTRUMENTS.
Application filed January 25, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK KUHN and JAY A. HAND, both citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Handle Attachments and Name-Plates for Electrically- Heated Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to heated tools, such for instance as sad-irons, and has particular reference to the construction of attachment means for the handle, which performs the additional function of a name-plate.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a sadiron embodying the improved construction;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section therethrough Fig. 3 is a cross-section;
Fig. f is a perspective View of the handlebearing and name-plate.
l is the body of a sad-iron or other heated nstrumentof any suitable construction, and .3 is the handle therefor. C are bolts or studs projecting upward from the body, which engage the shank D of the handle to secure the same to the body.
To form a firm connection between the handle and the body it is desirable to have a wide supporting bearing, and it is also desirable to limit the amount of heat-conducting contact. With our improved construction instead of directly attaching the handle shanks D to the body A, seat li'itnlbtl E is provided, preferably a sheetmetal stamping. This member as specifically shown is oval-shaped and is provided with marginal downturned flange F for directly bearing upon the body A, and is recessed at G and H to receive the end portions of the shanks D. The recesses G and H are of a depth preferably substantially equal to the thickness of the shanks, but the flange F is of greater depth. This Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

will leave a space between the bottom of the recess and the top of the body which is filled by a washer I sleeved upon the stud C. Clamping nuts J are providedfor engagement with the studs, whichwhen tightened will firmly clamp the shanks D in the recesses G and H and will also hold the memberE upon the body. Thus a firm connection is formed between the body, as the width of the member E will prevent any tendency to rock.
The member E in addition to, performing the mechanical function just described is valuable for use as a name-plate. The
marking may be placed upon the exposed top portion of the member and may be formed by the same stamping operation which presses the blank.
l Vhat we claim as our invention is:
1. In a sad iron, the combination with a body portion and a handle therefor having shank portion of a member formed of pressed sheet-metal having a fiat top portion, depressions therein forming seats for the handle shank portions and conforming thereto and a depending marginal portion resting on said body, said member forming a raised boss on the body and constituting a name plate. I V
2. In a sad-iron, the combination with the body portion and a handle therefor having shanks extending inward from the opposite ends thereof, of a bearing member formed of a pressed sheet-metal blank, having a marginal flange for bearing on the body and recesses for receiving the shanks, and clamping studs passing through said sheet-m ital member and shanks and securin the same to said body.
In testimony whereof we a'fiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK KUHN. JAY A. HAND.
