Be it known that LTJOHN ROBERT CUN- NYNGI-IAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of l-lamilton andState of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Filling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to improvements in bag filling apparatus and has particular application to a combined cut-off and measuring device. j 4
'In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a combined cut-od and measuring apparatus for filling' bags, sacks and the like wherebya predetermined quantity of material may be delivered to each bag or sack without waste of material and wherein measuring elements of different capacities may be employed so that the apparatus may be used for lilling bags of different capacities.
1t is also my purpose to improve and simplify the general constructionof cut-off and measuring devices and to provide a device of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability and which may be manufactured and marketed at minimum expense.
VVith'the-above and other objects in view, the `invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth inv and falling within the scope of the claim.

Referring now lto the drawings in detail, 1 designates a base.V Upstanding from the -base 1 are standards 2 spaced apart equal distances in square formation. Arranged between the standards 2 at the upper eX- tremities thereof and suitably secured to such extremities is a hopper 8 of any desired capacity designed to contain the material to be measuredl and delivered to the bag. Arranged below the lower end of the hopper 3 is a substantially rectangu-` r lar plate l through which the standards V2 pass. `Secured to the lower endof the hop per 3 and bearing upon the plate 4 isa channeled guide 5 extending across the plate l and formed in the channel guide .5. and the plate et are openings alining axially with the outlet opening of the hopper 3. fir.- ranged below the plate 1- is a. rectangular plate 6 formed with openings through which the standards 2 pass and capable of sliding movement along the standards. Formed on the upper side of the plate 6 and extending across the same is a channeled guide 7 'formed with an opening alining axially with the openings in the plate t and the hopper and opening into the upper end of a'v 'discharge chute 8 secured to the lower side of the plate 6 and depending` therefrom. Secured to the under side of the plate 6 adjacent to the respective edges thereof and depending therefrom are supporting arms 9 converging toward each other at their lower ends and secured to the lower ends of the arms 9 is a vertical sleeve 10 slidably mounted upon a vertical rod 11 secured to the base 1. rlhis sleeve 10 is equipped with a set screw 12 whereby the sleeve may be held in adjusted position upon the rod 11. Formed on thek lower side of the plate 4e concentrically of the opening therein is an annular flange 13, while formed on theupi per surface of the channeled guide 7 is' an annular flange 14.- al1n1ngw1th the flange 13. 15 designates a measuring tubeadisposed between the plates a and Gand having the upper ends thereof arranged i within the flange 13 andthe lower end disposed within the Harige 14e. Slidably mounted in the respective channeled guides 5 are slide valves 16 and 17 and formed in the valve 16 is an opening 18, while formed in the valve 17 is an opening 19 arranged at one side of the opening 18 in the valve 16 so that when the opening 18 is in registration with the lower end of the hopper the opening 19 will be out of registration with the lower end of the measuring tube, while when the opening 19 is in registration with the measuring tube the opening 18 will be out of registration with i, the discharge Iend of thel hopper. In practice, the set screw 12 is 'loosened and the sleeve 10 moved downwardly along the'rod 11 to lower the plate 6 so that the tube 15 vmay be removed and another tube inserted and when the other tube has been applied the plate 6 ris moved upwardly to a position to efectlively'hold the tube 15 between the plates land 6. The set screw 12 is then tightened in order to hold the Vplate 6 in adjusted position.V Normally, the
opening 18 in the valve 16 is in registration with .theV hopper so that the material'poured into the-hopper willfiow into the tube 15. `While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A cut-off and measurin device for illinfr bags and the like embodying spaced vertical standards, a hopper secured to the upper ends of said standards, a plate arranged below said hopper, a channeled guide formed withV the lower end of said hopper extending across said plate and formed with an opening alining with the outlet end of said hopper and with an opening in the plate, an annular flange formed on the lower surface of the plate and concentrically of its opening, a second platehaving an opening vertically alining with the opening of the iirst mentioned plate and channeled guide, an annular flange formed on the upper surface of the second mentioned plate and concentri- Vcally of its opening, a discharge chute leading from the opening of the second mentioned plate, a measuring tube interposed between the hopper and discharge chute with the ends thereof engaging in the annular anges, valves slidably mounted in said guides, supporting arms depending from the last named plate, and means carried by the said arms for effecting a vertical adjustment of the last mentioned plate in a direction toward or from the first mentioned plate to accommodate measuring tubes of various sizes to be interitted between the hopper and discharge chute.
