Be it known that ll, Fin Sie@ :fr of ilmin on, in the county of New Castle, andin the tate ofI Delaware, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Frocesses for Producing Artificial Leather, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly toan improvement in the met ods of producing 4coated fabrics but more especially woven fabrics bearing a coating or layer of a nitrocellulose composition.
The object of my invention is to produce a product of this kind in which a layer of nitrocellulose composition carried by the fabric will'be ver effectively and securely anchored to the abric. llt is generally known that fabrics coated with nitrocellulose compo- Ysitionsare sometimes iven 14 to 16 coatings,

ln the drawings l have shown a machine l A8 and 9, whichy are adapted to be adjusted by means 'of screws 10 and 11, supported in the main frame 1 and having Worm wheels 12 and 13 on their ends which mesh with worms 14 and 15, carried by two shafts 16 and 17, and adapted to be operated by handles 18 and 19. The shafts 5, 6 and 7 carry near one end thereof, gears 20, 21 and 22 which are keyed to thelsliaft by means of removable keys 23, said gears 20, 21 and 22 being all of the same size.. Upon the other end of the said shafts 5, 6 and?, are carried. gears 24, 25 and 26, the gear 25 being smaller than the gears 24 and 26, and said gears being keyed to their respective shafts in a similar manner to the gears 20, 2l and 22. Only one of these sets of gears is used at a given time. 1When the gears 20, 21 and 22 are used the keys are removed from gears v24 and26, 'and when the gears 24, 25l and 26 are used the keys 'areA removed 'from the gears 20 and 22. `'lhe gears 20,'5'2l'an'd'A 22 are used when -it is desired to have the rolls 2, 3 andA 4 moved at the same speed, and thegears 24,.A 25 and 26 are u sedwhen'itI is de- .sired to have thetop andbottomrolls move 'slower than the middle roll.v The central shall show one form of apparatus used applying the plastic' after ythe' .ir'abricfhas shaft6 is extended Iat the one end :of the end l-thereof a tight pulley 29 and a loose pulley 30. supported in the arms 36, and from this point the vfabric passes under a doctor' blade 1, supported in arms 42 from the main frame 1, and held in position by thumb screws 43. A body of nitrocellulose jelly or other cementing material 44 is designed to be carried in front of the doctor blade 41, said body of cementing material being conned in its proper lposition by a pair of angle lates45, attac ed by thumb screws .46, to t e doctor blade 41.
In carrying out my process I iirst apply one or more coats of nitrocellulose jelly to the fabric in the usual manner, using a coating or s reading machine of the well-known type. ach of thesecoats is dried after it is applied. The coated material is then passed to the above described calender ma- E chine, 'where the procedure is as follows A coating or cementing material is preferably rst-applied on top'l of the coats already applied. ThisA is done by means of the doctor blade 41. -Before this cementing coating has dried the goods -pass between the rolls 3 and 4 where they receive a coating of plastic material from the' body 'of plastic material 35. Then the coated fabric may be conveyed away and 'supported in such a manner as to permit the coatings to dry and harden.`

c I claim:
1. The process of producing' a coated fabric, which comprises applying to the fabric one or more coats of a film-producing y nitrocellulose composition, each coat being dried after its application, and then ap lying a coating of plasticmaterial in s eet form by means of ressure.
2. The process o producing a coated fabric, which comprises applying to the fabric one or more coats of iilm producing nitrocellulose composition, each coat being dried after its application, and then applying a coating of nitrocellulose plastic by means of pressure.
3. `The process of producing a coated fabric, which comprises applying to the fabric vone or more coats of nitrocellulose composition in the form of a jelly, each coat being dried after its application, then applying a coating of cementing material, and then before the cementin material has been allowed to dry applying a coating of nitrocellulose plastic by means of pressure.
4. The process of producing a coated fabric, which comprises-applying to the fabric one or more coats of a film-producing nitrocellulose composition, each coat being dried after its application, and then applying a coating of plastic cellulose composition by means of calender rolls.
l 5. The process of producing a'coated fabric, which comprises applying to the fabric o ne of more coats of nitrocellulose composition in the form of a jelly, each coat being dried after itsapplication, then ap lying a coating of cementing material, an then before the cementing material has been allowed to dry applying a coating ofnitrocellulose plastic by means of calender rolls.
6. The process of producing a coated fabric, which comprises applying to the fabric one or more coats of nitrocellulose composition in the form of a jelly, each coat being dried after its application, then applying a coating of nitrocellulose cementing material, and then before the cementing material has been allowed to dry applying a coating of nitrocellulose plastic by means of pressure.
