M. ,T. MEAGHER. FOLDABLE WASHBOARD. APPLICATION min JULY 24. ms.
Patenfwd Feb. 26, 1918.
ncnnron r. MEAGHER, on NEW "roan, 1v. Y.
FOLIDABLE wnsrinoann.
Application filed. July 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION T. MEAGHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a FoldableNVashboard, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a foldable washboard. Its organization comprises essentially a pair of members which are hinged to each other, so that said members may be folded together when not in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the improved wash board; Fig. 2 shows a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig.3 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line 3, 3; Fig. 4.represents a front elevation of a modification of the invention; Fig. 5 shows a top plan view of Fig. 4 and Fig. 6 is a section of Fig. 4 on the line 6, 6.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 the wash board is shown to consist of members designated in their entirety by the numerals 20 and 21. The member 20 comprises the pair of side Sills 22 with the lower edges 23 and connected at their upper ends by the flange 24. A corrugated operating surface 28 with the flat upper extension 29 extends between said sills 22 and the flange 24. The flange 24 extends from both facesof the extension 29 and on the rear face of the extension has formed therewith a pair of parallel depending wings 30. The member 21 comprises the pair of side sills 32 with the upper edges 33. The sills 32 are connected by the corrugated operating surface 34 and the lower flat extension 35 having the concaved edge 36.
The pairs of side sills 22 and 32 are connected by the hinges 37. When the wash board is in its open operative position the edges 23 and 33 abut against each other. The extension 29 forms with the sills 22 and the flange 24 a receptacle for soap or the like.
The lower flat extension 35 substantially comiects the lower ends of the sills 32 and provides means for the easy flow of the water from the objects which have been rubbed on the board.
When the board is not in use the members 20 and 21 are folded on each other by means of the hinges 37 the lower ends of the side sills 32 being protected and frictionally held by the wings 30. V
Referring to the form of the invention Specification of Letters Patent.

.in their entirety by the numerals 40 and 41.
The member 40 comprises the pair of side SlllS 42 wlth the lower edges 43 and are con- Patented Feb. 26, 4.916.
nected at their upper ends by the flange 44.
A corrugated operating surface 48 with the flat upper extension 49 extends'between said sills 42 and the flange 44. The flange 44 extends from both faces of the extension49 and on its rear portion has formed there- Y with the wings 50. The corrugated surface 48 has formed in the depressed portions corrugated surface 58 has formed in the depressed position thereof the openings 62. A rear wall 63 extends between the pair of sills 56 and a lower. wall 64 extends between the wall 63 and the corrugated surface 58, and thereby there is formed the discharge compartment65. v
The pairs of side sills 42 and 56 are connected by the hinges 66. \Vhen the wash board is in its open position the edges 43 and 57 abut against each other. The extension 49 with the sills 42 and the flange 44 form a receptacle for soap or the like. The lower flat extension 59 substantially connects the lower ends of the sills 56 and provides means for the easy flow of some of the water from the objects which have been rubbed on the board.
When an object like a handkerchief is being scrubbed on the corrugated rubbing surfaces 48 and 58 of this modified form of the invention, a large portion of the Water that has been soiled is forced through the openings 52 and 62 into the compartments 55 and 65 from which latter itcan easily be removed after the operation of scrubbing has been finished. Then this modified form of the board is not in use the members 40 and 41 are folded on each other by means of the hinges 66, the lower ends of the side sills 56 being protected by the wings 50.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1s:-
1. In a device of the class described, in
combination, a pair of washboard members eachhaving s1de's1lls, a corrugated operatmg surface secured to the side SlllS of each .member, one of said corrugated surfaces being formed with a flat upper extension and, the other with a lower fiat extension, a flange secured rightangularly upon the upper edge of the sills of one member. so as to project fromboth faces of the flat upper extension thereof, said flange being formed with a pair of parallel depending Wings, and means for hingedly connecting the washboard members together with'respect to each other so as to allow one member to swing to frictionallyengage the wings and said rightangularly disposed flange so as to hold said Washboard members together in folded rela- 'tion.
2. In combination a pair of washboard members, each provided with a pair of paral- .lel side sills,a corrugated operating surface connected to the side sills of eachmember Copies of this patent may be obtained for and consisting of a plurality of folds, each fold having a slot, a rear wall secured between the side sills of each member, a flange secured to the outer ends of the sills of one member and extending between the corrugated surface and rear wall thereof, a wall secured to the outer ends of the sills of the other member and extending between the corrugated surface and rear wall thereof, and hinges connecting said members together in foldable relation, the inner edges of each member being adapted to contact whereby a knockdown compartment is formed by the said surfaces, side sills flanges and rear walls of said respective members.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan in the county of New York and State of New York this 10th day of July A. D. 1916.
