The improved sofa bed involves a case in which thebed proper is concealed when the parts are arranged in sofa form by the back and seat portions of the sofa, the said sofa portions forming in effect the main support for the bed proper when the parts are arranged in bed forming position.
The bed proper is arranged particularly with a view to permitting the usual clothing to be arranged thereon in practically made-up or ready for use condition and se cured and held in this condition during the use of the structure as a sofa, thereby perinitting the conversion into a bed without the necessity of securing the bed clothing from other compartments or storage spaces.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being bad particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which: I
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the struc ture of the parts arranged in sofa forming relation; l I
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the sofa seat and back turned down to form a support for. the bed, the bed proper being shown in inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing th parts arranged in bed forming-relation, the
springs and clothing being omitted; j
Figit is a section on line 4-4; of Fig.1; Fig. 5 is a perspective of the bed proper illustrating particularlythe means for securing the bed clothingin place-when the bed proper is in il'loperative position.

ing the sofa arms. 'The extensions 5 are connected at their forward edges by a strip orsection 8 constituting the front wall of the case and being of a height corresponding to the desired height of the sofa seat above the bottom ofthe case.
Hingedly connected at 9 to the upper edge of the case section 8 is the sofa structure involving a-seat 10 and a back 11. These parts are rigidly secured together, the seat being preferably hinged on the lower side and at its free edge, so that it may be turned rearwardly to a position between the extensions 5, thereby disposing the seat portion 10 between and coextensive with the exten sions and the back upwardly from the seat portion and between the forward edges of g the side boards 2. The extensions 5 are provided on their inner side with supporting sections 12 having their upper edges arranged slightly below the similar edges of the extensions, the sections 12 forming a support for the seat when the latter is in sofa forming position. The side boards2- are provided on their inner sides near their.
forward edges with bearing straps 13 against which the back 11 bears when the parts are in sofa forming relation, the bearing straps,
17 is adapted to fit between the side boards and provided at each side edge near the upper end with guide pins 18 to sl de in grooves v edges'of the bearing strips 13, as will be'ap- 15. The closing section 17 is of a height to extend from the upper edge of the back 11 of the sofa element-to the top 4 of the case,
so that when the parts are in sofa-forming. relation, the closing section completes 1n effect the back extension of a sofa, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The closing section 17 is adapted to be swung upwardly and moved rearwardly beneath the top a whenthe device is to be converted into a bed, the
forward edge of the section 17 in such" open position being supported upon the upper parent fromFig. 3.
The bed structure comprises a box like element made up of a suitable frame as at '19, the ends of the structure having corner posts 20 to which at one end is secured a 'hingedf foot board .21 and at the opposite end a hinged head board 22, thesepa'rts being the usual parts of a bed structure. These parts, both foot board and head board are 7 adapted for folding inwardly over the boxlike structure of the bed being so connected that they may be temporarily locked in upright position when desired. The locking means is not'illustrated, as any simple form of latching device may answer this purpose.
The relatively inner corner post 20 of thebed box, that is, the corner post next the case 1 when the parts are in bed forming po" sition, are extended below the box body for an appreciable distance and pivotally connected to standards 23 secured to the bottom of the case at a point slightly in advance of the'rforward edges ofthe side boards 2, as will be apparent from Fig. 4 of the draww The disposition of the parts,-so far described is such that withl'the closing section 17 moving into open position that is beneath the tape the sofa section will be turned outwardly so that the free edge of the back 11 'rests'upon the supporting surface coincithe forwardwall 8 of the case.
7 from the standards 23. Springs'24 are preferably secured to the bottom of the case in a position to receive the inner side of the bed box when the" latter is turned into inoperaatively forward portion of the case, as
clearly shown in Fig. at.
tive or folded position, thus supporting the same and maintaining it disposed in the rel- As an important feature of the present invention, attention is directed to Fig. 5 wherein shown a means of holding the removable parts, of. the bed in made-up relation 'tliebeu'is folded war-m thecase. As
previously stated the head and foot boards of the box are foldable inwardly and they ing made upready for the use of the bed,
the head board and foot board are turned down in the positions indicated in Fig. 5 and the straps applied as noted. The box body may be then turned into inoperative or folded position without in any way disturbing the condition of such body so that when it is desired to use the article as a bed" and the parts are otherwise arranged in appropriate relation, all that is necessary is to disconnect the straps, turn up the foot boardand head board and the' bed is completely ready. This is important as it avoids the objection of the features of making provision for carrying the bed clothing in a different storage space and making up the bed each and every time the conversion is made.
That portion of the case rearwardly of the bed'box when the latter is in folded relation is provided with hinged arms 29 and a shelf 30 which may be used as clothing supports or for any other desired purpose of a temporary storage character at any and all times.
In connection with the improved structure, a salient feature resides in the extreme simplicity of the parts, and the entire absence of complication due to a very few parts. This avoids the possibility of inoperativeness incident to the usual complication of articles of this character, and is par ticularly advantageous as sofa beds are desirable only in the ease and simplicity in which they may be converted and in connection with a complete sanitary arrangement, the latter being gained in the present structure by the fact that a bed as an entirety is completely spaced from all scctions of the case proper so that a complete circulation of air is had therearound while the sofa section is at no time completely concealed so far as sanitation is concerned. Furthermore all parts are readily and conveniently accessible whenever repair or removal is necessary.
What is claimed is:
1. A sofa bed involving a case open in the front thereof, a sofa section comprising a relatively fixed back and seat portion movably connected with the case and adapted to close a portion of the opening in the front thereof, a disappearing closing section adapted to complete the closure of said openmg.
2'. A sofa bed involving a case open in the 1',25?,542 r tilt front, a sofa section comprising a relatively front of the case not closed by the back of fixed back and seat portion, the back being the sofa section. 1 adapted to close a portion of the opening in In testimony whereof I aflix my signature the front of the case, a bed section normally in presence of two Witnesses.
