INSULATING-FINISH FOR METAL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARLE S. IRWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, Kent county, Michigan, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Insulating-Finish for Metal, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved insulating finish for metal and the process of producing the same.
It has been found highly desirable to pro-- vide an effective and satisfactory finish for metal that will obviate the cold effect due to the conduction of heat by the metal where it comes in contact with the human body, as in backs and bottoms of theater and church seats and the like, as well as in other articles of furniture and use where a superior finish is desired and where the metal i likely to contact with the body.
The object of this invention is to build up a substantial coating body on the metal which will be closely adherent, which will be economical to produce, and which will be capable of effective finish in imitation of the appearance of either leather or wood.
Objects relating to economies and details of process and product will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means and processes described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the appended claims.
In carrying out my invention, after thor oughly cleaning the metal, I first coat the same with oil size of any kind but preferably one which consists of about two parts of naphtha and one part of linseed oil, and thoroughly dry the same. Second, I apply a coating of varnish, and while this varnish i still tacky or soft I dust on some finely divided wood fiber. Fine saw dust obtained from resawing satinwood is highly satisfactory material. Third, I then apply a coating of glue size and while the same is soft or tacky dust over the same a second layer of the finely divided wood fiber or saw dust. Fourth, when this is dry I apply a coating of glue size, which completes the surface for the finish process, and from this point on the treatment may be similar to the finish for wood as ordinarily applied Specification of Letters Patent.

To secure an imitation mahogany finish or a polished finish, I sandpaper carefully be tween the fourth and fifth and between the fifth and sixth steps and carefully rub down the varnish coats, and by proper shading with drop black or similar color a mahogany or wood grain effect is secured.
The finishing steps, it will be observed, of my improved process and product can be considerably varied without departing from my invention. I desire to claim spe: cifically the method by which the general imitation of the appearance of leather is secured and that specific product, along with claims for the process and product broadly considered. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A metal article having a finish comprising coatings of oil size, varnish with a layer of wood fiber, glue size with a layer of wood fiber, retained by a coat of glue size, finished with coats of oil finish suitably stippled and coated'with varnish and having an irregular surface of the appearance of leather.
2. A metal article having a finish comprising coatings of oil size, varnish with a layer of wood fiber, glue size with a layer of wood fiber, retained by a coat of glue size, finished with coats of oil finish and coated with varnish.
