Description

A. MAHONEY.
SANITARY MATTRESS FOR INVALIDS.
APPLICATION FILED APR-27, 1911.

INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY To all whom it may concern:
ABBIE MAHONEY, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
SANITARY MATTRESS FOR INVALIDS.
Application filed April 27, 1917. Serial No. 165,031.
Be it known that I, ABBIE MAHONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Mattresses for Invalid's, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mattresses, and has for its object to provide a mattress for use in hospitals and for bed ridden invalids, and which has a portion hingedly fastened, and which may be temporarily removed when the person on the mattress desires to attend a call of nature, and that may be quickly and comfortably replaced in the same general plans of the mattress.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which I have shown a substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a plan view of the mattress. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1, and somewhat enlarged as to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective showing the central portion swung out of the general plane of the mattress. Fig. & is a detail of the fastenings and lever for the removable portion of the mattress.
Invalids in hospitals and other bed ridden invalids must be moved frequently to attend the calls of nature, and it is very desirable that such calls may be attended to without disturbing the invalid. The present invention provides a mattress A, having its central portion cut out as at 1; preferably rectangular in form, and the lower edge has a rod l surrounding it to hold the springs of the mattress in place. The edges and inner walls of said cut are lined and covered with oil cloth 2 or other waterproof flexihle material, in order that the edges of the mattress around said opening may be readily cleaned if they should become soiled. A section of mattress material B herein called the block section having springs and a frame 3 similar to the mattress is made to fit within said opening, and is hingedly fastened to the said rod 1, by bending ends of the said frame 3 around the rod at. A. rocking lever 5 made of wire has one end portion formed into an angled arm 6 and secured to the frame 3 of the block section B, and the other end portion bent at right angles to form a lever arm 7. The said lever arm 7 has a curved loop 8 formed therein and a hook formed near the end. The said block section B may be moved on its hinges to insert or withdraw it from the said opening 1 in the mattress, and when said section B is in the said open ing it may be secured in place by engaging the curved loop 8 on one side of the frame of the mattress and the said hook on the other side. To remove the said section B from the opening 1 the hook and loop are disengaged from the frame of the mattress and the lever arm is pressed downwardly and the said section B is moved. on its hinges and fastened by engaging the frame with the end portion of said lever arm 7 In this position the frame 4 of the section B will be brought upward against the springs of the, mattress. For convenience the sheet that is used over the mattress has a portion cut out the side of and in alinement with the said opening 1, and a larger piece than the section cut out is to be placed as a sheet over the hole in the first described sheet and as a cover for the said block section.
Having thus described my invention I deside to secure by Letters Patent and claim:
1. A mattress of the class described comprising a frame in rectangular form covered with mattress material, and having a central portion thereof cut out; a wire frame surrounding the lower edge of said cutout portion; water proof flexible material lining the upper and lower edges and inner wall of said cutout portion; a block section hingedly secured to said frame; and a rocking lever having one arm fastened on said block section and the body fastened to the wire frame; and a lever arm having a loop and hook form thereon to engage the rectangular form of the mattress.
2. A mattress of the class described comprising a metallic frame covered with mattress material and having a portion thereof 2 1,257,oss
cut out; a wire frame surrounding-the lower ing in said mattress; and an arm on said V 'edge of said cut out portion; water 'nroof rocking lever secured on said block section. 19'
flexible material lining the inner Wall and In testimony Where f'I have affixed my vedges of said cutout; a rocking lever fassignaturevin presence of a Witness,
