Wit/warm, [fiver/J07? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GREENLEAF STAGKPOLE, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAUGES FOR BUTTON-HOLE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,702, dated April 16, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. I, GREENLEAF STACKPOLE, of Elizabeth, in
' Union county and State of New Jersey, have Nature and Object of my Invent ion.
My invention relates to a novel button-hole gauge and scale-plate for holding the cloth in position, so that button-holes can not only be cut of any regular and uniform desired length, but also so that they can always be out at a uniform and desired proper distance from the edge of the garment; its object being to fur-. nish for a ladys work-basket an article which will enable her to cut a button-hole scientifically and with the greatest possible convenience.
In the accompanying drawing, which 'is a part of this specification, and to which refer once is made, Figure l is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the blade, which I propose to use, and which is of the shape which I prefer, although different forms of blades might be used.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In Fig. 1, A A A A A are holes cut through the plate. These slots are of different lengths, but all extend in one direction from a base line common to them all. 13 is the blade, in position when not in use. Both the gauge and blade can be struck up out of thin metal. As will be seen by the drawing, a rule is to be out upon the side of the gauge to measure the exact distance from the edge of the cloth, also to measure the distance between button-holes to be out. The dotted lines show the position of a piece of cloth as held when the buttonhole is to be cut one-fourth of an inch from its edge. To cut a button-hole the cloth is placed in position between the pieces or open part of the gauge 5 the sides are then pressed together upon the cloth with the thumb and finger of the left hand, and the blade, held in the right hand, thrusts the opening A, corresponding with the size of the hole required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved button-hole cutter-gauge described, composed of a plate which is provided not only with the cutting-gauge slots A of different lengths and properly designated, all of which extend from a common base-line, but is also provided with a graduated scale extending from the base-line of the slots along the edge of the plate, by which the distance between the edge of the garment or fabric being cut and the base-line of the slots can be readily determined, all as and for the purpose specified.
Witnesses: Gr. STACKPO'LE.
