Be it known that I, ROYAL J. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets of the Girdle Type, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in corsets and particularly to the type in which a band or girdle that is permanently attached to the body of the corset is one of the principal features of the improvement. T his band is preferably secured on the outer surface of the garment and when the corset is worn by the wearer it is designed to engage the person at the waist line. Associated with the band or girdle part of the corset is an elastic member that is preferably located in the central or back portion of the corset, whereby the garment can readily yield to the various movements of the body. ()ne of the objects of the present invention is to provide a corset structure that is particularly adapted to young and growing persons in order that the movements of the body may not be interfered with. Another object of the invention is that in having the girdle or band portion of the corset engage the waist, the hose supporters which are attached to the corset structure will not displace the garment, since the tendency of the hose supporters is to exert a downward pull on the corset. This result is obtained in a general way by making the back or center portion of the corset comparatively narrow when considered in connection with the other parts or side portions, of the garment, whereby the band and narrow back portion of the garment will closely fit the back of the wearer as will be readily understood when considered in connection with the drawings.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the garment showing the comparatively narrow back portion thereof with the insert piece of elastic material, also showing the band extending in opposite directions from the center portion or line of the back to the side portions, the upper edge of the waist or band portion coinciding with the upper edge of the garment at the center line hereof.

Fig. 2 illustrates the improvement in place as worn by the person and showing the band portion of the corset engaging the waist line of the wearer and the comparatively narrow back portion of the corset as closely fitting the person.

Fig. 3 is a detail sectional line 33 of Fig. 1.

. Referring to the drawing in detail, the forward front side portions of the garment are indicated at 1 and 2. These are formed with depending portions 3 and 1 and also depending portions 5 and 6 which are of less length than the portions 3 and 4; The usual hose supporters 3, 4t, 5 and 6 are attached to these depending portions 3 and at as shown and to the usual edge pieces 7 and 8, in which are located the eyelets 9 for receiving the lacing which retains the garment in place. 10 designates a girdle or band that is formed of strips of fabric 11 and 12 that are stitched to the outer and inner sides of the corset as shownin Fig. 3, and extends from the center line 13 0f the side portions 2 and 3. The elastic insert in the back portion of the corset is indicated at 1% and extends longitudinally of the garment from the lower edge 10 of the girdle or band to the lower edge 1% of the garment. The distanee from the upper edge of the girdle to the lower ec ge 14:, it will be noticed, is comparatively narrow when considered with relation to the other sides or portions of the corset. The elastic insert is secured in place by means of stitches indicated at 16, 17 and 18. The lower edge 14' of the insert is left free so that it may readily stretch or yield to the movements of the body and also to permit the corset to be laced either tightly or loosely and at the same time cause the band or girdle 10 to fit the person as tightly as may be desired, in order that the garment may be permanently held in place.

It will be observed from this construction that when the garment is in place the hose supporters will not displace the garment since the band or girdle 10 which engages the waist line of the wearer will serve to prevent any slipping of the garment. The length of the band 10 is made sufficient to retain the garment in place and with the elastic insert it will not interfere with the movements of the body. It will be observed that the girdle or band 10 is secured to the binding strip 11, which is folded over and engages the strips 11 and 12 that compose the view on the inner and outer parts of the girdle to which it is secured by means of the stitches 11 /Vhat I claim is:

1. A corset construction comprising side portions that are connected together by means of a girdle or band portion that is located with its upper edge coinciding with the upper edge of the garment at the rear side thereof and having an elastic insert piece between the side portions and of less length than the side portions and attached to the lower edge of the band or girdle, the lower edge of the insert piece coinciding with the lower edge of the garment between the side portions thereof.

2. A corset having side portions and an insert piece of elastic material connecting the same, the longitudinal length of the insert piece being less than the side pieces to produce a garment with a centrally located narrow back portion, whereby when the securing means for the garment are in place, the insert piece will fit closely to the body of the wearer at the back, and a girdle or band portion also secured to the side portions and insert piece of the garment and engaging the waist line of the wearer.

3. A corset construction comprising side portions, a band connected to the side portions and extending only across the back of the wearer and designed to engage the waist line of the wearer, the upper edge of the band coinciding with the upper edge of the garment at the intermediate back portion of the garment,a single insert piece of elastic material located at the center portion of the back of the garment and extending downward from the lower edge of the band and forming the entire lower section of the garment at this portion thereof.

4. A corset construction comprising side and front portions, means for securing the garment in place on the wearer, comprising a band extending across the back portion only and connected to the side portions, said band consisting of strips secured to the inner and outer surface of the corset, and an insert piece of elastic material connected to the back and side portions and forming the entire lower center of the back portion of the garment, as described.

5. A corset construction having the usual side and front portions, a band secured to the corset and extending across the back portion only of the garment, an insert piece of elastic material secured to the lower edge of the band and extending to the lower edge of the center back portion of the corset, the insert piece being also attached to the side portions and the band occupying a position on the corset for engaging the wearer at the waist line.

6. A corset construction comprising elongated side portions and a narrow back portion, said back portion having a band, the

ends of which terminate at the side portions and an elastic msert-piece occupying the centrally located back-portion of the corset and extending to the lower edge of the same,

the longitudinal length of the centrally located back portion being such to closely fit the wearer to prevent displacement of the garment, and means for securing the garment in place.
