Description

C. D. WOODRU-FF.
Improvement in Leader Hqqk.
N0. 125,652 Patented April9,1872.
[anew/jar.
KM 7AM 7 iii: enre J'- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHAUNOEY D. WOODEUFF, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
I'MPROVEMENT IN LEADER-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,652, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY D. W001)- RUFF, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leader-Hooks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved vice. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the lines wof Figs. 1 and 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to render more securely fixed within a brick wall the shank of a leader-hook; and it consists in the peculiar shape of said shank, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the. annexed drawing, A represents a leader-hook having one of its arms considerably longer than the opposite arm and tapered to a point, so as to form a shank, B. Upon the outer side of the shank B is a longitudinal central flange or rib, 0, having a thickness equal to about one-third the width of the metal forming the hook, and a width at its outer end equal to about one and one-half times the width of said metal, from which end said flange decreases regularly in width until it reaches the end of said shank, where a sharp point is formed. As thus constructed, it will be seen that, in transverse section, the shank and its flange present a T- shaped form, the longer arm of which, (the flange 0,) when said shank is driven into the mortar-joint of a brick wall, occupies a position in a line with said joint, while the shorter arm of the same (the metal of the hook) is placed at a right angle to the line of said joint. The effect of this construction is that the flange G prevents all vertical movement of the hook, the pointed, flat metal of the hook insuring the lateral stability of the device, while both of the parts, which together form the shank, present so much surface to the mortar and compress it in such opposite directions as to render the outward displacement of i said hook from accident or use highly improbable.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- As a new article of manufacture, a leaderhook having a T- shaped shank in cross-section, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th. day of December, 1871.
