UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
THOMAS G. HITT, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1918.
Application filed October 23, 1917. Serial No. 198,016.
flash-light to disclose their locality in case of attempted burglary, highway robbery, a
house on fire or other sudden danger demanding the aid of neighbors or police.
To this end, my inventlon consists in the construction and arrangement of parts forming a burglar alarm hereinafter more fully described, and particularly stated in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents three firecrackers tied together according to my invention. Each of these crackers is charged with a peculiar powder that explodes with a very loud detonation, and also produces a brilliant flash light that may be seen at a great distance. The paper covering of each cracker extends forward at 4, 4, 4, beyond the end 5, thereof and is tied by a string 6, around its fuse 7, and the three fuses are wrapped together by a string 8. The strings are of loose fiuffy character and, with the body of the cracker, will be blown into fine shreds when the explosion occurs, leaving nothing to set afire. The fuses are graded in length to time the explosions in succession, at short intervals, that give them a recognizable character. A simple and sure means to accomplish this even succession is to locate the charges in the crackers at different distances from the fuse ends, as, for example, at 1, 2 and 3 as shown, thus giving definitely different lengths to the fuses.
This may be done with the style of cracker shown in my application, Serial No. 1841151, allowed Oct. 10, 1917, and the brilliant illumination may be produced by the powder described in my pending application Serial No. 188362; the present application being the carrying out of one great object of those two applications. 7
The three fuses being fixed to have the ends of them all lighted at once by a single match, their respective lengths insure the characteristically timed discharges. Any number of these firecrackers may be similarly arranged to correspond to any desired signal that may be given by detonations or flash lights, but three quick shots being known to the police and now advertised to the public as the danger signal, one of these burglar alarms, discharged in any community. would be verv liable to bring aid to the locality indicated by both sound and light.
I claim,
In a burglar alarm, a number of fire crackers having fuses of difl'erent lengths protected within the covering of the respective crackers and tied together with their ends a little protruding to be lighted all at once.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
