HARROW ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1918.
Application filed May 29, 1917. Serial No. 171,719.
To all whom tmag/ concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HARLAND, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Drake, in the county of McHenry and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrow Attachments, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to a harrow attachment and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient means, whereby a detachable rim is provided for converting a harrow disk into a soil packer.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient means for facilitating the carrying of the soil packer upon the periphery or edge of the harrow disk and holding the soil packer against accidental removal therefrom.
Vith these and other objects in View, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, eombinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully descrilied and claimed.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a harrow disk. the supporting shaft being shown in section and a portion of the fastening device also being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a Section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the harrow disk showing the soil packer applied to the periphery thereof.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of a portion of the soil packer showing the construction of the means'for securing the several scotions of the packer in assembled relation.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of the fastening device or an addition which may loe used for holding the sections of the packer firmly upon the harrow disk.
Fig. 6 is a section taken on line G-G of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of the clamp illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the harrow disk which is supported upon the usual supporting shaft or axle 2 of any suitable or desired construction. A packer is secured to the outer edge or periphery of the harrow disk 1 and comprises a pair of sections 3 and 4 as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing. Each of the sections 3 and 4 are similarly constructed and each section comprises a central link 5 and a pair of end links 6, the abutting end links of the respective sections being adapted to interlock as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Each end link 6 is provided with a projecting tongue 7 adapted to fit into a notch 8 formed upon the adjoining link, the respective tongues 7 of each end link (5 fitting in nested relation as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The end links 6 are pivotally secured to the intermediate links by means of the hinge joints 9 also clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
lt should be understood that the. soil packer is so constructed as to produce a substantially wide tread surface 10 upon the periphery thereof and is provided with an inwardly extending flange 11 adapted to engage one face of the hai-row disk'l and an inclined flange 12 adapted to engage the opposite face of the harrow disk 1.
Each of the end links 6 is provided with an inwardly constructed web 13, having a laterally extending flange 14, the flanges of the abutting links 6 being adapted to fit. in spaced relation with respect to each other. The securing bolt 15 passes through the aperture 16 formed in these 'flanges 11 for the purpose of permitting the respective sections of the packer to be firmly and securely fastened upon the edge or periphery of the harrow disk.
It, of course, should be understood that these webs 13 may be either formed upon the outer flange 12 of the packer rim or may be secured to the inner flange 11 of the packer rim which is illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, these flanges being indicated by the numeral 13 in Fig. 5 of the drawing. When the flanges 13 are formed upon or integral with the flanges 11, the clamp 17 may be employed for fitting over the adjoining ends of the end links 6 of the respective sections of the packer rim. This clamp 17 comprises a body portion which passes over the inner fiange 11 and under the tread 10 of the packer rim. The clamp 17 is also provided with a thickened upper portion comprising a depending hook 18 for fitting snugly over the inner edge of the flange 11 and carries a plurality of laterally extending ears 19 through which ears 19 pass the bolts 20 for engaging the inner edge of the flange 11 as illustrated in Fig. 5 and hold the clamp 17 against accidental removal from the packer rim. The upper end of the clamp 17 is also provided with a transversely extending aperture 21 through which aperture 21 passes a bolt 15 of the saine construction and having the same function .as the bolt 15 illustrated and described in Fig. 3 of the drawing. This bolt 15 -`also passes through the flanges 14 carried by the inner flanges 11.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient device has been produced for permitting a .packer rim to be conveniently and efliciently held upon the harrow disk thereby permitting the harrow Cdisk to perform a two-fold function by the addition yof the packer rim upon the disk.
What is claimed is:
l. As a new `,article `of manufacture, a detachable packing band adapted lto fit over the ,periphery of a harrow disk, said band comprising a pair of separable sections, each section being substantially V-shaped in cross section and provid-ed with a substantially A V-shaped notch upon the periphery thereof for snugly fitting over the periphery of the harrow disk, eacn sectionalso comprising an intermediate link and a pair of end links, each end link provided with interlocking means vat their abutting ends, v,each end link also provided with an inwardly extending web upon the inner periphery thereof, each inwardly extending web provided with a laterally extending flange, and securing means .passing through said .flanges for holding `said sections rmly upon the harrow disk.
2. As a ,new article ,of manufacture, a dctachable packing 'band adapted to fit over the periphery of a harrow disk, said band kcomprising .a pai-r yof separable sections, each section being substantially V-shaped in cross section and provided with a substantially V-shaped notch upon the periphery thereof for snugly fitting over the periphery of .the harrow disk, each section also com prising an intermediate link and a pair of end links, each end link provided with in terlccking .means at their abutting ends, each end link also provided with an ine wardly extending web upon the inner periphery thereof, each inwardly extending Y web `provided with a laterally extending flange, securing means passing through said fianges for holding said sections firmly .upon the harrow disk, a clamp fitting over the interlocking .ends of said sections, said cla-mp comprising a body having a lower end vsurrounding and passing under the 1eriphery of the ,abutting ends of the interlocking ends of said section, said clamp provided with laterally extending ears, means passing through said means and engaging the inner edge of said packer rim, said means for .connecting said flanges to said sections passing through .the upper end of said clamp for `preventing the accidental Aremoval of said clamp from said sections.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
FRANK HARLAND. Witnesses: f
