GROCERS DISPLAY-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5, 19 .1%.
Application filed December 16, 1915. Serial No. 67,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST J. KIBBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grocers Display- Cabinets, of which the following is a speci fication.
An object of my invention is to provide a display and storage cabinet which is so arranged that the goods contained therein are held in several compartments thus per mitting the same to be used for various goods, the food-stuffs contained in each of the compartments being displayed at a point visible to the customer, and each compartment presents an opening through which the desired quantity of the food-stuff may be removed by the grocer.
A further object is to so construct the compartments that the food-stuff is supplied thereto through an opening at one side of he cabinet and is supplied by a gravity feed to a scoop trough from which the food-stuff may be taken, this arrangement insuring that the goods in the scoop trough is at all times a fresh supply from the main body of food-stuff contained in the compartment.
A still further object is to so form the display portion that a part of the foodstuff is caught thereby upon the supply be ing placed in the compartment and that the parts may be shifted to permit. the discharge of the food-stuffs thusl displayed when the compartment is being emptied.
With other object in view which will be referred to, my invention consists in such novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the drawings and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts of the cabinet cut in vertical sections to more clearly illustrate the arrangement of the compartments;
Fi 2 is a View in front elevation from the display side of the cabinet;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 taken from the back side of the cabinet;
Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional View taken on the line th iit of Fig. 1.
The cablnet comprises an outslde case 1, which is, as illustrated in Fig. 4, substantially rectangular, and this case may be mounted on the wheels or casters 2 to permit the same to be moved from place to place over a floor.
The front side of the cabinet is taken up by a plurality of display openings 3 which have the doors 1 interspersed therebetwecn, and each of the display openings is fitted with a glass 5. A plurality of scoop troughs {3, comprising the flat bottom 7 and a slant 111g front wall 8 are positioned through openmgs 9 formed in the back wall of the case and the number of these scoop troughs corresponds to the number of display open ings, the scoop troughs preferably being disposed in a lower plane than the cor responding display openings.
Diagonally disposed partitions 10 are placed in the casing to slope gradually from the front wall 11, at a point below the display windows to the bottom 7 of the corresponding scoop trough and in this way the casing is divided into a plurality of compartments each having a sloping bottom formed by the wall 10 and terminating in the flat bottom 7 of the scoop trough.
The doors or covers 12 are hinged to the rear wall 13 of the case to close down over the opening of each of the scoop troughs and the spring catches 1a are carried by the sloping wall 8 of the scoop troughs to engage the doors or covers 19 when brought to a full open position and hold the same against closing movement. The doors 4t communicate with each of the compartments at a. point above the display openings and have locks 15 by which they are retained in a closed position.
Cleats 16 are mounted on the side walls of the case adjacent the display windows and stop boards 17 are held by these cleats at a point spaced from the glass 5 of each of the display openings. These stop boards 17 have their upper edges beveled at 18, and thus as the food-stuff such as beans, peas, grains, coffee, etc., are supplied to the compartments through the door openings closed by the doors at, aportion of the foodstuff passing to the compartments will be caught by the beveled edge 18 and arrested between the stop boards 17 and the glass 5 where it will be held on display as a sample of the goods contained in that particular compartment.
The food-stuff supplied to each of the various compartments will be fed by gravity down over the partition 10 onto the fioor 7 of the scoop-trough, and to prevent an oversupply to the scoop trough 6, battle plates 19 are positioned between the sides of the case and adjacent the upper edge of the opening 9 through which the scoop troughs are positioned. A metal lining 20 is placed 011 the bottom 7 of the scoop trough and thus this bottom presents a smooth surface from which the food-stuff may be scooped or taken out in a measure.
As is shown in Fig. 2, the front of the cabinet may be divided so that two vertically disposed row of display windows and filling doors are presented thereon, and with such a cabinet it is probably desirable that a partition be disposed vertically through the upper part of the cabinet, also the filling door of the top compartment may be dispensed with and a door be provided through the top of the casing to permit filling of the top compartment.
In the use of the cabinet, the supply of food-stuff is placed in the various compartments through the openings closed by the doors 4:, a small quantity thereof is caught by the beveled edge 18 of the stop boards 17 and thus this quantity is brought against the glass 5 of the display opening 3 to show the character of food-stuffs in the compartment, the remainder of the foodstuff being deposited on the sloping floor formed by the partition 10 and thus guided down onto the fioor 7 of the scoop troughs. The battle plate 19 being arranged across the mouth of the scoop trough engages in the food-stufl V and thus holds the same against too rapid supply to the scoop trough, however, as the food-stuff is taken from the scoop trough, a fresh supply will be fed thereto between the baffle boards 19 and the covered bottom 20 and in this way it is assured that the supply of the food stuff in the scoop trough is at all times fresh. As the food-stuff in the compartment and the trough becomes exhausted, the stop boards 17 may be raised to open a space at the bottom through which the food stuffs confined against the glass 5 will drop by gravity and thus this goods which has been on display will be taken with the remainder of the food stuff from the compartment and a fresh supply will be fed between the stop boards 17 and the glass 5 as the compartment is again filled.
While I have herein shown and described 7 only one specific form of the invention, it will be understood that various modifications in the design of the cabinet and in V the connection and arrangement of the parts might be resorted to .Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention in view of which fact I Wish to be limited only to such claims.
I claim:
1. A display cabinet comprisinga casing having a plurality of display openings and supply doors alternately and vertically arranged on one side, glass coverings for said display openings, a plurality of scoop troughs received through openings formed at the opposite side of the casing, a plurality of diagonally disposed partitions arranged from the one side belowthe display openings to connect with the floors of the scoop troughs to form slopingcontinuations thereof, stop boards mounted adjacent the display openings on the inner sides thereof and spaced somewhat from the glass cover.- ings to thus allow for display of the material placed within the scoop troughs and on the sloping doors, and means to limit the flow of mate rial over the sloping partitions and into the scoop troughs. V
2. A display cabinet comprising a casing having a plurality of display openings and supply doors arranged alternately at one side, glass coverings for said display openings, a plurality of scoop troughs received through openings formed at the opposite side of the casing, a plurality of diagonally disposed partitions arranged from the one side below the display openings to connect with the floor of the scoop troughs to form a sloping continuation thereof, stop boards provided with upper beveled edges mounted adjacent to the display openings and in a spaced relation with respect to the glass covering the same so that as material is fed through the supply openings a portion thereof is caught by the beveled edge and directed between the stop boards and the glass, cleats by which said stop boards are removably held in place, and means to limit the flow of material to the scoop troughs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
