Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HENRY W. JOHNS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FABRICS FOR BAGS, ROO FS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,573, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. J OHNS, of New York city, county and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric or Material for Roofing and similar purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled'in the art to make and use my invention.
My invention relates to a fabric which shall be both water and acid proof, and which is specially adapted for bags, roofing, and similar purposes, as hereinafter explained.
In constructing my improved fabric, I take a sheet of canvas, or similar fabric of suita ble thickness and strength, and coat it with an adhesive and Water-proof compound, preferring for this purpose the acid-proof composition described in the patent granted to me May 10, 1870, though other compounds may be used for this purpose. I then take strong Manila paper and saturate it with parafiine wax melted, and reduced by the addition of naph tha. The paper thus prepared I then spread upon one side of the canvas sheet, coated as above stated, and by passing them between rolls, or other similar means, press the canvas and paper firmly together, whereby they are caused to adhere each to the other.
I sometimes add to the parafline a small proportion of gum copal or resin, for saturating the paper, but these are not essential.
The fabric thus prepared is both Water and acid proof, and is admirably adapted for making sacks for the transportation of ores, fertilizers, and chemical compounds; and also for covering roofs, more especially the roofs of factories where chemical operations are carried on, and from which acids and deleterious gases or products are given off and deposited upon the surrounding roofs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described water and acid. proof fabric, consisting of a layer of canvas and a layer of paper, prepared and united substantially as set forth.
HENRY W. JOHNS.
