SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372.89%, dated November 8, 1887.

or some other water-proof or cementing or disinfecting material. In such paper it has been found that the interposed composition has a tendency-to run out from between the sheets of paper, especially under the influence of heat, if the latter is placed in a vertical position, as when a roll of such paper stands on end. If a binding or hem is used to prevent this trouble, the edge of the paper is thickened. By my invention the paper is kept of uniform thickness, less paper is required. thereby effecting a saving, and the material used for waterproofing or cementing or disin feeling is efl'ectually prevented from exuding under any conditions.

The following is the description .of myinvention,in which reference is made to the accom panying drawings, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in all the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A A represent the sheets of paper out of which the compound sheet B is constructed. Over the center or other desired portion or zone of each sheet,or of one of them, the asphalt or other desired composition is applied. This may extend to within a short distance of one or each edge. To the uncovered narrow strip,along the edge or edges, paste or suitable cement is applied. If, now, the two sheets are rolled together, the entire surfaces adhere. The desired portions are cemented by the asphalt or other cement, a, the rest by the paste or cement, b.

tend clear to one of the edges. In this case the cement, a, is carried from one edge nearly to the other, and the remaining portion of the paper is pasted together with the paste, 1). It also shows how more than two layers may be used, 0 representing an extra piece.

This sheet may be used as it is, or may be split into narrow pieces through the dotted line a: 00. Intermediate lines or areas of pasting, b b, afford additional security in the retaining of the cement,'a a,in place when the paper is not split or slitted. The two cementing materials are so chosen that each will perform its specific functions the most eli'ectually possible. Thus, if the center is to be water-proof, the usual asphaltic composition may be applied thereto, while flour paste will secure the ends so as to prevent the asphalt from running out; or a disinfectant cement may be used for the center, and the edges may be secured by'glue. More than two thicknesses of paper may be employed.

I do not restrict myself to any particular paste, cement, or composition, or assortment of pastes or cementing material, and the method of applying the same is no part of this invention. The respective areas of application of each cement or composition may be varied also.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an article of manufacture, the compound paper consisting of two or more layers cemented together with two or more cementing materials, each applied within definite areas.

2. As an article of manufacture, the compound paper cousisting of two or more layers cemented together in the center by one composition and on the edges by another, substantially as shown and described.
