Description
C. W. WRIGHT- TERMINM GOUPLENG FOR ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS.
APPLICATION man JULY 29.1915.
Patented. Fab. 5:, 191% mamm UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. WRIGH'IVOF TOPEKA, KANSAS.
TERMINAL COUPLING FOE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 5.191s.
Application flied July 29, 181.5. Serial No. 42,602.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
lie it knmvn'that 'I, GnAnLns W. .WRIG HT, citizen of the United States, residin at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and btate of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Terminal Couplings for Electrical Conductore of whichfthe following is a specification.
My invention. relates to electrical shocks.
tns or 'epplisnces and more particularly. an improved connector or means for dots-ch chi and electrically connecting one or a. pin; rulity of conductor terminals.
The device of my invention is designed n'ilnerily as a, constituent part of a. copend;
- mg application now on file and hearing Sc-- single electrical circuit to be siniultaneously Operated from a common source. evident from the toregoin that it connect- .ing plug or couplingfor 't ductors inust of o'necesSitybc rial #233,362.
in their preferred csrbe equipped with an EtllIlllllG-i'llldl '(lQJilCG and that the several ClQA-YICQS. be arranged 111 s Now it is ie electrical con rov-idcd in order that the cars-may he coup ed and un coupled. iii-amanner common to thenrt. It is therefore a...prin1sry object of-tjhie present invention to provide a cql u'icbting plug of a novel, design. and consl 'nctio ji. whereby the conductor terniinirls maybeeoupld and un coupled with eccuracy facility;- rapidity and ease.
The above and :xddifioi .ohj cots are ac complished by so n1 I l -meiit i'n the w companyi-ng 'dr: rw n'gs dos lerly pointe'dlout in the irlaiins which are appended heretoand form e. part of this application.
In descriliing my inventifn in detail reference Wlll be had to the ac nnpanying drawings wherein like. .characl rs denote like or corresponding parts throng loot the several views, and in which: Y
Figure 1 is a side elevetiini of a. cminuctor constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section of one of the connector sections;
. Fig. 3.is a similar view, the complcnlental or interlockingconnector section being shown;
Fig. 4- is a face view of one of the men tioned sections; and
are illustrated 'lribed in the following specil' :i'tion and then more particu- Fig. is e detail perspective view o'ra hon celcin filling.
Before proceeding Wltll a descr ption 0f the (lra'wingsl desire to oallparticula'l;attention to the fact that while I have evolved my invention with reference to its use a constituent pert of an electrically operated train In train annnncialors (elcc- .trically operated) it 1s dcsiral'll'c that each members 1 and 5 is adapted tor-threaded 'cn' gagenient with the rosymotive coupler sec- "tions 2 and 3, tl1e cap 5, when-lockedor iastened,overlapping one end of the coupler section 3 and the cap 5 ,whenloclmd or fas toned, .hverlapping; on end of the. coupler section 2, such arrangement n1a int 1ining the respective couplen-sections against:- lateral displacement and the conductor tcr nil'ials at all times in conductive relatio rso that an electrical current may pass from we to the other of the railway cars in com-womenii'h which the COllllOC-lill or coupler used.
An extension"? is formed UJJOIl tllG cou- 'p1er section 2 to'fit a. compleinental recess When assembled or fastened together,
8' therefor formed inthe coupler section 3.
A shoulder 8 is formed upon the said section 2 to bear against a shoulder 9. The coupler section 3 is in turn provided with an externsion 10 edapted for fitting n-mgageinent with a recess 11 therefor in the coupler section. 2. Said section 2 is also provided-With a shoulder 12 for engagement with a shoulder 13 of the section 3. noted it is evident that the respective'cou pier sections are of a peculiar construction whereby to be easily interlocked by relii tiv'c lateral movementand securely fastened when thus interlocked against continued lat- 4 .ml1n.o ement by means of the fastening cap or member 5, To fasten the caps-5 it is but necessary that they be 'opposltelyturned. the
till
By the construction coupler sections 2 and 3 form a substantially cylindr cal casting of a neat and attractive a porcelain filler 17 is adapted to be arranged in the recess and to actas a support whereby the terminals (not shown) of the conductors leading thereto may be mainta i fed in an upright osition and in firm contact wvith conductor terminals shown); carried by. the coupler section. 3;
' The latter couplersection 3 is likewise re- Q C S Sed and equipped with a filler similar to that described as forming apart of the sec- "tion 2.
l will be observed" from the foregoing that movement other than lateral cannot "be I enema under any circumstances when once the coupler..secticnsarc in er w ds t a h 2 5 only operation incident to a connection of the conductor-terminals is that outlined above,
vi-Zi: laterallyand relatively moving the coupler sections until interlocked and thereafter operativelyturning the cap members until in overlapping engagement with the respective v coupler sections 7 and 10; and that the sec; tions constituting the connector, when un-\ coupled, are adapted to be carried, one cou:
plingsection at theend of each car.
It will be. understood that the above de .scri tion and accompar'iying drawings com- 1 end only-the genera-1 and preferred efniment of my invention and that various niinor chang'es n details of construction,
4'0 proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the, seopeaif the appended advantages of my invention.
I claims and without sacrificing' any of. the
Havmg thus fully described mytinven- (not tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
'1. In a connector for electrical conductors, overlapping comple'niental connector sections having surfaces to permit mutual abutting engagement at their ends, the end of each section having a laterally ofi'set extension for engagement in a corresponding recess formed in-the abutting surface of the co acting section, whereby separation of the sections'longitudinally and transversely 1S precluded.
2.. 'In a connectorfor electrical conductors,
overlapping complemental semi'-eyl indrical" connector sections, having surfaces to permit mutual abutting engagement at their ends,
the end faces of the sections and the abutting surfaces being convexed and concaved respectively in a 'diametricaldirection, the
end ofeach section having a longitudinally extended laterally ofl'se't extension for engagement in a corresponding recess formed in the abutting surface of the coacting sec tion, whereby separation of the sections longitiidiiially, transversely, and laterally, is precluded.
3.- In a connector overlapping I complemental semi-cylindrical connectorsections, having mutual abutting engagement at their ends, the end- 0feach section having a longitudinally extending laterally ofi'set extension for engagement in a corresponding recess in the abutting face .of the coacting section, whereby separation of the sections in a longitudinal and transverse direction is precluded, andca'p'smounted on the ends of the sections to preclude lateral separation of the sections In testimony whereof I afiix my'slgnature in. presence of two'witnesses.
