GRUTCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgd Jan, 29, 1918,
Application filed January 12, 1916. Serial No. 71,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn: A. DESJAR- DINS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at N ordegg, Alberta, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crutches, of which the following is a speci- 'lication,
My invention relates to improvements in crutches, one object of the invention being the provision of a two membered crutch, such members being adjustably connected together, so that the crutch will be universal,
and can be adjusted for use with persons of diflerent heights.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an adjustable crutch, which is simple and durable in construction, and which is thoroughly practical and eflicient in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete crutch constructed according to and embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
F ig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modified form of adjustable lock.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the two bowed members, whose lower ends are connected together with the cross-bar 6, having the reduced ends 6', fitted in the lower slotted ends of the members 5, and secured therein in any desired or well known manner. The usual shoulder piece 7 is attached to the upper ends of the members 5.
The pole or rod 1, is slidably mounted through the cross-bar 6, and is provided with the hand grip 2, whose reduced terminals 3, slidably fit with the opposite slots 8, formed in the members 5, the rod 1 being vided with the chamber 9, in which slidably fits the disk 10 carried by the pin 11, which 1s provided with the manipulating head 12, a coiled expansion spring 13 being mounted 1n the chamber 9 to exert a pressure to hold 7 the pin 11 seated in one of the sockets 4, and
thus hold the rod 1 from longitudinal movement, while the hand-grip 2 holds it from rotation.
In Fig. 4:, the threaded bore 13 received the locking screw 10, which is provided with the manipulating milled head 12.
vVhat I claim as new, is:
In combination, a crutch post having a handle secured at its upper end, said handle being provided at its opposite ends with reduced rectangular shoulders, a pair of similarly shaped brace arms each having an intermediate straight portion and curved portions curving in opposite directions with respect to the straight portion, a shoulder rest secured to the upper ends of said brace arms, the straight portions of said brace arms being provided substantially throughout their lengths with elongated rectangular grooves in which the rectangular shoulders of said handle are adapted to slide relatively to said brace arms, a cross bar connecting the lower curved portions of said brace arms, and means for locking said cross bar adj ustably of said crutch post.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. DESJARDINS.
Witnesses:
