has particular relation to improvements in log holders for cutoff saws, such appliances vices.
An object of the invention is to provide a log holder for cutoff saws, which is simple in construction and eflicient in operation. Another object is to provide a log holder which will grip and so hold the log thatbinding or clenching of the saw is avoided. A further object is to provide a log holder which will effectively grip logs of irregular shape. device which will grip logs of different diameters. A further object is to provide a log holder which may be applied to a logway without interrupting the continuity of the log-way.
A clear conception of an embodiment of the invention may be had by referring to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters designate the same or similar parts in the several views. I

The steam log holder disclosed is especially adapted to grip and hold logs resting upon a log-way while the ends thereof are being out square by means of a saw located intermediate the two sets of gripping jaws. A pair of floating links 5 are pivotally connected to each jaw 2 adjacent the upper end thereof, and have their lower extremities pivotally connected to the frame 3 by means of connecting elements 6. links 5 are connected with swivel blocks 21 During the normal operation of the device *the log to be sawed is advanced in proximity to the aws 2 by means of the conveyer chain 12 and and the cleats 18 associated therewith, the jaws 2 being in extreme open position as indicated in Fig. 1. When the log has been properly positioned relatively to the saw, the piston 10 is moved upwardly by admitting steam or other working fluid to the lower face thereof, causing the crosshead 8 to move upwardly along the parallel 7 guides 9 and moving the jaws 2 toward the log and simultaneously swinging the elements 4 about the pivots 19. The teeth of the jaws 2 eventually strike, grip and slightly elevate the adjacent log, the pressure against the piston 10 being maintained until it is desired to release the log after cutting. The jaws 2 may be readily released by admitting steam to the upper face'of the piston 10. causing the cross-head 8 to move downwardly and to withdraw the jaws 2 from the log. Y
It will be noted that the arrangement of elements 4- and jaws 2 as disclosed, causes the teeth of the aws to approach the log in such a. direction that most effective gripping of the log results. By slightly raising sition of the lower jaw pivots in such a mane ner that the jaw teeth will effectively grip logs of different diameters- Th abutments 15, 1G prevent excessive impingement of the jaws 2 against, the frame 3 and form stops for arresting and varying the extent of the closing movement of the jaws'Q. The one piece frame 3 preserves the rigidity and continuity of the log-way.
It should be understood that it is not desired to be limited to the-exact details of construction herein shown and described, for
obvious modifications within the scope of the appended claims may occur to a person skilled in the art.
It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent I 1. In combination, a frame, a pair of elements pivoted to said frame, a jaw pivoted to each of said elements, and means for moving said jaws.
2. In combination, a frame, a pair of elements connected to said frame by a common pivot, a jaw pivoted to each of said'elements, and means for moving said jaws and said elements about said common pivot.
In combination, a frame, a pair of elements pivoted to said frame, each of said elements having an abutment. a jaw pivoted to each of said elements, each of said jaws having an abutment engageable with said element abutment to limit relative movement of said jaw and said element, and means for moving said jaws.
4-. In combination, a frame, a. pair of elements connected to said frame by a common pivot, each, of said elements having an abutment, a jaw pivoted to each of said elements,
each of said jaws having an abutment engageable with sa1d element abutment to limit relative movement of said jaw and Said jaws.
7. In combination, a frame, a pair of elements pivoted to said frame, a jaw pivoted to each of said elements, a floating link associated with each of said jaws, a reciprocable piston, a cross-head movable by said piston, linkage connecting said cross-head and said floating links, and elements connecting said 1 floating links and said frame.
8. In combination, aframe, a pair of elements connected to said frame by a common pivot, a aw pivoted to each of said elements,
a floating link pivoted to each of saidjaws, a reciprocable piston, a cross-head movable by said piston, means for guiding sa1d crosshead, linkage connecting said cross-head and said floating links, and elements pivotally connecting said floating links and said frame.

In combination, a frame, a pair of elements pivoted to said frame, a jaw pivoted to each of said elements, a floating link associated with each of said jaws, a reciprocable piston, a cross-head movable by said piston, equalizing levers associated with's'aidcrosshead, links connecting said equalizinglevers and said floating links,'and elements-connectin g said floating links and saidframe.
10. In combination, a log-way comprising spaced beams, a single web frame rigidly connecting said beams and extending longitudinally thereof, a pair of spaced jaws -mounted upon said frame ad acent each of said beams, and means for moving said aws.
11. In combination, a log-way, jaws movable laterally toward and away from a log resting upon said log-way, said jaws being also movable to elevate said log, and means for moving said j In testimony whereof, the signature of the inventor is affixed hereto.
