Be `it known that I, RONALD F. MCFEELY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in 'LastingfMachinea of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several be driven. The gripper .is used to seize anal* pull the upper while lasting the shank, forepart and toe of the shoe, but is not necessary for lasting the heel seat, the upper materials of which are simply wiped over upon the innersole and tacked, For advantageous use the gripper must stand open ready to receive and seize the upper` when the machine is started andl it must be ren-' dered inoperative while the heel Seat is being lasted. Also the combined wiper and tack carrier must at such time be retracted ready to advance to"its work vand be loaded with a tack when the machine starts. In last-ing welt shoes small tacks are fully inserted to fasten the heel seat, and on other parts of the shoe long tacks are left with their heads and stems projecting from the work for convenient withdrawal after the welt attaching operation. The raceway y must be adjusted to supply short and long tacks and the driver -stroke must be regulated to obtain the desired full and partial insertion of such tacks. For expeditious use these adjustments should be correlated. 'The long tacks-are inserted near the edge of the shoe and the short heel seat tacks must be located Amore remotely from the edgel but ont of the way of the heel attaching nails.

Reverse adjustment of the vertical shaftlnakcs the opposite adjustments of said parts suitable lfor side and forepart lasting. 1f nov centric connection 77, Figs. 3 and 9, with a link 7l that extends backwardly to a lever 72. One end of the lever has an adjustable pin and slot connection 74 with a portion of the machine head, and the other end of the lever is connected to an edge gage carrier 75 which is mounted to slide from front to back on a guide rib on the lower face of the machine head. These parts are organized so that when adjustment of the controlling devices is made by means of vertical shaft 69 to withdraw controlling devices 36 and 56 for suspending the operation of the gripper and providing full insertion of the heel scat tacks the gage carrier 75 is retracted or moved inwardly toward the bodyof the machine to allow for the insertion of the heel scat tacks inside of the location for the heel attaching nails. The extent of the movement imparted to the edge gage for this purpose can be varied by the pin and slot connection which the link 71 has with the lever 7'2 and the normal position of the edge gage carrier can be varied to suit different conditions by the adjustable connection 7 4. In addition to the forth and back adjustment of the gage carrier the usual thick 'edge gage 80, which is u'sed while lasting the heel seat but is in the way while lasting .the shankbecause it is too thick to reach into the Shanks of'many styles of shoes, is connected with the controlling mechanism so that it is brought up into position'for use when adjustment of the other parts is made for heel'seat lasting and is turned down out of the way when adjustment of the gripper, racking devices. etc., is made for shank and side lasting, the thin edge gage 79' remaining in operative position.
For this purpose the vertical shaft 69 is connccted h v a crank arm 81 and link 82, Figs.
Q and 3, with a toothed segment 84 which'v drives a rack 85; rlhe rack meshes with thc pinion 86 sec'ured to a pivot pin mounted in the front end of the gage carrier and upon which the thick gage is fastened. By these connections the thick edgev gage is turned up and downby movement transmity ted from thc vertical shaft 69.
In the use of a machine of this invention, an operator will start lasting a `shoe at one side of the shank as is the custom. For
this purpose he will find the machine at, rest with the wiper a-nd tack block retracted l to permit proper presentation of the shoe in the machine and the gripper jaws open for the reception of the upper, these conditions having been provided for by the controlling devices 12, 20 when the machine was last brought to rest.` A single adjustment of the vertical shaft 69 and the controlling devices connected therewith will now position all of the operating parts suitably for lasting the shank by locating the gripper stops 36 in position to cause the gripper' to operate, by locating the driver stops 56l 1n position to leave the tacks upstanding for subsequent withdrawal after the welt attaching operation, by shifting the raceway to cause it to furnish long tacks required for shank and, side lasting, and by turning the thick edge gage down ont of the way of the shoe and advancing the" edge gage carrier 75 to cause the thin edge gage to position the shoe for locating the tacking line in desired proximity to the edge of the shoe bottom. The improvements provided by this invention save the time of the operator required to make the separate adjustments necessaryy formachines as heretofore built.L When the side lasting is completed and the heel seat lasting is to be commenced, the machine will again cbme torest with the tack block and wiper in retracted position and the gripper upraised with its jaws open.
A single, adjustment of the vertical shaft 69 in the direction reverse to that in which it was previously turned will now withdraw the gripper stops 36 from under the updraw lever so that the updraw cam and its slide will therefore fail to lower the. gripper 'to upper seizing position and the gripper will remain upraised out of the waycf the operator during the heel seat lasting'. Si-
multaneously with this adjustment the stops 1 56 will be withdrawn from the tack driver,
permitting the driver t0 make the length of the stroke for full insertion of the heel seat tacks. The raceway will be shifted to deliver short heel seat tacks; the gage carrier 75 will be retracted for positioningy the tacks inside the-line of heel nails and the thick edge gage will be swung upwardly into operative position. The expedition with which the required adjustments can be made and the certainty lthat the machine will always position the wiper and tack block and the gripper in readiness for receiving the workso that the'irst cycle of the machine can always be utilized, as herein provided for, enables this invention to increase the capacity of the machine.
