GRAIN-DRIER.
Application filed March 16, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FoREsr BROMLEY, a resident of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grrain-Driers of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grain driers, and particularly to that type of mechanism disclosed in Patent No. 954,033, issued to L. C. Kiser, April 5th, 1910, on which this present invention is an improvement.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus or mechanism for drying grain by passing it through a plurality of chambers or compartments and subjecting it to currents of air, either hot or cold, as desired. The air is admitted through perforated concaves along which the grain is moved by means of suitable conveyers, so that at all times during its passage through the apparatus, it is subjected to the action of the air.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such; other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of an apparatus constructed according to my invention, showing two sections, one arranged above the other;
Fig. 2 is an end, elevation of the driving end of part of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, it is seen that the apparatus or mechanism comprises the box or casing 1 which is substantially rectangular in shape, having the plurality of bearings 2 provided in each end in which are journaled the shafts 3, each shaft having the suitable conveyor vane 4t thereon. Each boxing or casing is divided into two chambers or compartments by means of the partition 5 which extends from one end to a point near the other end of the boxing or casing leaving the passage 6 from-the upper Specification of Letters Patent.

compartment, to the' lower compartment. The shafts 3 are driven'by means of the gear wheels 7 which mesh with each other, one of the shafts being driven by pulley 8 from a source of power. Each box or casing has the supply inlet 9 and the discharge opening 10, which are located so that the grain has to completely traverse both chambers or compartments before it is discharged.
In order to subject the grain during its passage through the machine to the action of air currents, I provide an air compartment 11 in each chamber or compartment which has the concave upper surface 12. This upper surface 12 is provided with the plurality of apertures or slots 13 which are preferably staggered, as shown. This air compartment is adapted to receive air from the suitable supply pipe let, this air being either hot or cold, according to conditions. The concave approximately parallels the curves of the conveyer so that as the grain is moved therealong by the conveyor, it will be subjected to the drying and cooling action of. the air currents.
I have shown how sections of these mech anisms constructed according to my invention may be arranged in multiple, it being understood that as many sections may be used as desired. The supply inlet and discharge opening of the adjoining sections register so as to make a passage from one section to the other, as clearly shown in Fi 1 of the drawings. I also provide the air and steam exhaust openings 15 in the upper end of each section, whereby the steam and gas will escape.
In operation, the grain is discharged into the supply inlet 9 and is moved over the concave 12 by means of the conveyor 4, being subjected to the hot air admitted through the inlet 14: and escaping through the slots or apertures 13 so that the grain is com pletely dried. If necessary, cold air may be admitted through one or more of the pipes 14 so as to cool the grain after it is dried.
What I claim is:
1. An apparatus of the character described, including in combination a casing having inlet and discharge openings, a partition within the casing dividing it into an upper and a lower compartment, said partition terminating short of the end wall so that the compartments intercommunicate, a conveyer in each compartment, each of said compartments having a false bottom formed upper and a lower compartment, said part-ition terminating short of the end wall so thatthe compartments intercommunicate, a conveyer in each compartment, an air compartment within each of said upper and lower compartments having a concave sur-' face with apertures therethrough, connections for supplying'air to said air compartments, whereby grain is subjected to the action of the air during its passage along said concave surface.

An apparatus of the character described including in combination, a casing, a partition within said casing dividing it into superposed compartments, said casing having inlet and discharge openings, said partition terminating short ,of one of the end walls of said casing to provide communication between the compartments, air compartments in each of said superposed com partments, the air compartment in the upper compartment extendin from the inlet end thereof to the end of the partition and the air compartment in the lower compartment of the casing extending from the passage provided by the partition to the discharge opening, said air compartments being provided with a plurality of apertures in their upper surfaces whereby grain is subjected to the action of the air during its passage through the casing.

In an apparatus of the character described, a section comprising a casing having an inlet opening in its top and an outlet opening in its bottom in alinement with each other so that a plurality of sections may be superposed one upon the other with the outlet opening of the top section registering with the inlet opening of the adjacent section below and so on, a partition within the casing dividing it into an upper and a lower compartment, saidpartition terminating short of the end wall so that the compartments intercommunicate, a conveyer in each compartment, each of said compartments having a false bottom formed on a concave to approximate the curve of the conveyor and to provide an air compartment therein, means for supplying air to said air compartments whereby grain is subjected to the action of the air during its passage along the false bottoms.
