lle it known that l, (luAnLes J. KLEIN, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at l\'lilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of 'Visconsin, have invented new and useful ln'iprovements in Strain-Relief for Pendent Electrical Devices, ot which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specilication.
This invention relates to strain relief means for pendent lamp sockets and `similar devices.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide in'lproved strain-relief means cnabling the device to be conveniently and eX- peditiously wired.
A further object is to provide simple and efficient strain-reliefl means wherein the grip on the conductor is effected between the socket base and a loose member retained by a part of the casing.

The device, as illustrated in Fig. l comprises an insulating base l for supporting the current carrying parts of the socket, a metallic shell 2 inclosing said base, a metallic cap 3 releasably interlocking with the shell, and an. insulating bushing 4 disposed within the cap 3 and resting upon the base l. The socket base 1 carries at its lower end a screw shell 5 for receiving a translating device and is provided with binding posts 6 on opposite sides for connection with line wires entering the casing through the cap 3. A suitable recess 7 is provided in the base l for housing a snap switch mechanism adapted to control the circuit of the translating device. ln the embodiment shown `the socket is designed to receive a snap switch mechanism having a double-ended push button operating member, and openings 8 are accordingly provided through opposite walls ot the base l to accommodate the push buttons. r
The socket base is also provided with grooves 9 leading vertically from the binding posts to the upper tace ot the base and. thence extending in opposite directions ad j aeent the perimeter of the base through 90 and meeting diametricaily at the center of the base below the opening in the cap 8. In wiring the device, the conductors are brought into the casing through the bushing t in the eonductor-receiving cap 3 and are then manually positioned within the tortuous open grooves on the top of the base and brought down in the grooves 9 for connection to the opposite binding posts. The-insulating bushing 4, which constitutes, in effect., a cover for the base, or a filler for the cap section of the casing, is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the base vand retain the conductors in the grooves. The bushing 1s itself maintained 1n closeconnection with the base by intcrlocks with the shell. l It is to be noted that the binding posts 6 are accessible from the sides ol the base and that the tortuous grooves of the latter are entirely open so that the line wires may be readily bent to'lie therein. Moreover, the insulating bushing 4 is the only member through which the line wires need be threaded and the same may rest within the cap in any relative rotary position. without affecting its capability ot retaining the line wires in the grooves.
The interlocking means for the cap and shell may be any desired type. AAs shown, the cap 3 is provided with two pairs of opposite inturned catches l0 which take into correspondingly located openings 11 in the shell. While the upper portion of the base 1 is provided with a circumferential flange l2 which rests upon the upper margine o' the shell, the catches. 10 are free to pass through the grooves 9 in the sides of the base and thus engage with the openings in the shell.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:--

In a pendent lamp socket, in combination, a casing having a removable conductorrceeiving section, an insulating base in said casing having. terminals 'for connection with such conductors and having tortuous open grooves extending from said terminals to a point in alinement with the opening in said conductonreceiving section ot said casing. said grooves having side walls presenting acute angles, and an insulating filler loosel)- disposed within said conductorreceiving portion and adapted to be clamped thereiny upon the top of said base for retaining such conductors within the grooves in the latter.

In combination, a sectional casing having a conductor opening, a base having binding posts thereon for conductors entering through said casing opening and having open tortuous grooves therein disposed in a single plane to receive and inherently bind such conductors for strain relief ot' their binding post connections and means to con tine the conductors within said grooves.
