WATER-JACKET FOR ELECTRIC-FURNACE ELECTRODES.
Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
Application filed March 7, 1917. Serial No. 158,118.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD JENNINGS a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Luton, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Jackets for Electric-Furnace Electrodes, of which the following is a specification.
It is usual in electric furnaces of the electrode type to cool the electrodes, where they pass through the roof of the furnace, by which rest on and are secured to the roof. In this arrangement there is the drawback that-considerable time and labor are spent in removing these jackets, whenever any repairs of the roof are required.
According to the present invention the water jackets are not supported by the roof of the furnace, but are carried by arms adjustable on a vertical support so as to be swung clear of the roof at any time. An adjustment in a vertical direction enables the position of a jacket to be adapted to suit any changes in the height of the roof due to expansion and contraction caused by variations of temperature.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows in side elevation partly in section and Fig. 2 in end elevation an arrangement according to the invention as applied, by way of example, to a furnace w1th three electrodes. K
The electrodes A, A, A are surrounded, where they pass through the roof of the furnace, by water 'ackets B, B, B. Each jacket is supporte by arms C, C (which adapted to slide on a vertical sup are only shown in connection with the jacket B) which are clamped in the required position by screws E .E to a vertical bar D supported in a bracket F fixed to the side of the furnace G. When it is required to remove a jacket, the corresponding electrode is withdrawn, the jacket raised slightly, if necessary, by lifting the bar D by means of the supporting screw H and swung to one side about the axis of the bar D. The screw H also serves to adjust the position of the water jacket for any variations in the hei ht of the roof.
aving thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim r I .1. In connection with an electric furnace of the electrode type, water jackets surrounding theelectrodes, the said jackets being supported above the roof but free of the latter, so that they can be adjusted in position both laterally and vertically.
2. In connection with an electric furnace of the electrode type, water jackets surrounding the electro es and carried by arms ort' and to rotate about the same, the S211 'ackets being disposed slightly above but ree of the roof of the furnace.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HAROLD JENNINGS KITCHEN.
