UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARLEY C. MOSLEY, 0F PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WHEELING STEEL CORPORA- TION, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
ELECTRICAL ROLL-HEATING APPARATUS.
Application filed December 31, 1923. Serial No. 683,705.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLEY C. MOSLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Portsmouth, county of Scioto, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Roll-Heating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roll heating apparatus, and it has for its primary object the provision of an electrical heating mechanism of jacket form for application in embracing relation to a pair or set of rolls, especially the reducing rolls of tin and sheet mills, whereby such rolls may be initially heated to the required high, or proper working, temperature prior to employment of the rolls for rolling hot metal sheets and plates.
A further object is to provide an elec tric roll-heating apparatus which may be conveniently and quickly applied to and removed from the rolls as occasion requires.
A still further object is to provide an electric heating device of the character mentioned having a form or construction which practically eliminates danger of injury to the roll surfaces through burning produced by short circuits in the electrical system which .forms a part thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the invention, partly in end elevation and partly in vertical section, illustrating its application to a set of reducing rolls,
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partially broken, of the same;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of an end portion of the heater structure;
Figure 4 is a similar view of the opposite end portion, showing the means provided for allowing free expansion and contraction of the space heater members; and- Figure 5 is a detail section on line 5-5, Fig. 4. v
Referring to said drawings, the reference numerals 1 and 2 indicate the upper and lower rolls, respectively, of a pair of hotmill reducing rolls, and 3 the mill housings.
Arranged on opposite sides of said rolls in complemental enclosing relation to the latter, or to the major portion of the length of the working surfaces thereof, are two similarly formed heater sections 4 of jacketlike form. Each of said sections comprises an outer sheet-metal shield plate or cover 5 having an inner lining 6 of sheet asbestos or other material non-conductive of heat. The opposite lateral edges of said cover 5 and said lining 6 are mounted, as by means of bolts 7, upon opposite substantially up right frame members 8 which are preferably of angle-iron form in cross section. Each of said frame members has that portion thereof which lies intermediate horizontal planes intersecting the axes of the rolls 1 and 2 straight and vertically disposed, while the opposite end portions thereof are curved arcuately in substantial conformity to the curvature of the adjacent surfaces of the rolls above and below said planes. Also attached, as by means of rivets 9. to the confronting faces of the inwardly, or radially, extending rib-like portions of the frame members 8 of each jacket section are frame members consisting of upper and lower pairs of ring segments 10, also preferably of angle-iron form. Said segments, as shown in Fig. 1, are approximately semicircular for embracing the adjacent roll throughout approximately one half the circumference of the latter.
Attached to the outer faces of the rollembracing portions of the oppositely disposed ring segments 10 are the opposite ends of a plurality of horizontal relatively-spaced electric heating elements 11, commonly termed space heaters, which may be of any preferred construction or may be of an or dinary commercial type. Thus mounted, said space heaters 11 are maintained adjacent to, but wholly out of contact with, the surfaces of the rolls and are adapted to impart heat to the latter by radiation and without the danger of injury to the roll surfaces, due to short circuits of the electric current, which would be attendant upon the use of said space heaters mounted in contact with the rolls.
Each of said heating elements, or space heaters, consists of a fiat ribbon 26 of a suitable metal carried by a heater body 27 and insulated from the latter by sheet mica 28. The opposite ends of said ribbon are attached to terminal clips 29 mounted upon the adjacent ends of said body and are suitably insulated from said clips, as by mica Washers 30. The current is carried to said clips by suitably arranged wires (not shown). One end of said body 27 is rigidly mounted on the horizontal roll embracing portion of the adjacent ring segment 10, as by a rivet 31, while the opposite end is loosely held by a button-head rivet 32, as shown in Fig. 4, which permits substantially free lengthwise expansion and contraction of said body.
Each of the complemental jacket sections 4 has rigidly attached to its outer face adjacent to its upper end a plurality of straps 19 having pivotally attached thereto suspension members whereby they are supported on tie rods or bars 20 extending between the upper ends of the housings 3. Each of said suspension members comprises alined rods 21 and 22 coupled together by a turnbuckle 23, said rod 21 having pivotal connection with a strap 19, and the upper end of the rod 22 having a hook 24 formed thereon for detachably engaging the adjacent supporting bar 20.
Rings or loops 25 fixed upon the upper ends of the heater sections 4 provide means of attachment for the carrying hooks of a. crane whereby said sections may be engaged for transporting the latter to and from positions adjacent to the rolls.
In practice, the apparatus hereinbefore described constitutes a convenient and readily applicable form of electric heater of heat radiating type whereby, when mounted in enclosing relation to a set of rolls, the latter may be heated initially to, a proper working temperature following a period of idleness in which they have been cooled. As is obvious, the jacket structure substantially conforms to the surfaces of the rolls with the space heaters disposed closely adjacent and parallel to said surfaces. The structure is made of a size to accommodate the rolls when the latter are new, and it therefore requires no adjustment to render it applicable to rolls of such different diameters as may result from the grindings frequently resorted to in polishing and re-surfacing operations.
The covers 5 and linings 6 of the jacket sections serve to prevent outward radiation of the generated heat and so to confine the latter it is effectively utilized for heating. the
embraced rolls.
