HOSE NOZZLE THREAD ADAPTER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 7. I9I6.

IIOSE-NOZZLE-THREAD ADAPTER.
Application filed November '7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Florence, county of Burlington, State of New Jersey. have invented certain Improvements in Hose-l lozzle-Thread Adapters, of wh ch the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of hose nozzle thread adapters for coupling fire hose to the nozzles of fire hydrants, so that the adapter can be readily applied to the nozzle.
The invention is an improvement upon that set forth and claimed in an application for patent filed by Newton Morton of even date herewith, and relates particularly to the details of construction of the mechanism for actuating the jaws.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1, is a side view of my improved adapter;
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view showing it connected to the nozzle of a hydrant;
Fig. 3, is a plan view; and
Fig. t, is an end view.
Referring to the drawing, 10 is the body portion having a threaded section 11 adapted to receive the coupling of the hose to' which it is attached. At the opposite end of the body portion is a washer 12 which abuts against the end of the nozzle 18. in the present instance of a fire hydrant.
@n the body portion are three lugs 14, forked at their outer ends to receive the sliding jaws 15. The jaws are held in position by pins 16 which pass through elongated openings 17 in the jaws, so that the jaws will have a certain amount of freedom.
The forward end of each jaw is enlarged and is provided with teeth 18, which engage the threads on the nozzle 13, and the rear end 19 of each jaw is turned at an angle in respect to the main portion of the aw and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 222, tfi lld.
Serial No. 130,035.
asct screw 20 is adapted to a threaded opencontact with the threaded portions of the nozzle. clamping'it sul'liciently so that, when the adapter is turned, the jaws act as a nut, causing the packing in the end of the adapter to come in close contact with the end of the nozzle, making a water tight joint. After the adapter has been coupled to the nozzle of a hydrant, the hose coupling can be easily coupled to the adapter by screwing it upon the section 11 of the body portion of the adapter.
While I have shown my improved adapter as having three sliding jaws, in some instances two jaws may be used, or more than three, without departing from the essential features of the invention.
The combination in a hose nozzle thread adapter. of a hollow body portion having means at one end adapted to receive the coupling of a hose, and having at the opposite end a pack ng ring; lugs on the body portion having forked extremities and beveled rear sides; sliding jaws mounted in the forks of the lugs by means of pivot pins, each jaw having a slot therein through which the pivot pin extends and being adapted to engage at one end the thread on the hydrant nozzle and having a right angled portion at the opposite end: and a set screw mounted in the right angled portion and bearing against the beveled lugs so that, on turning the set screws, the jaws can be clamped to the nozzle and the packing on the end of the body portion will b: forced against the end of the nozzle, making a tight joint.
