ject of the King of Bulgaria, and a resident of Portland, inthe county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hand Printing-lvlaeliines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hand-operated type-printing machine which has been particularly designed for addressing envelops or printing circulars or the like.
It comprisesl the combination with two parallel fonts of type, of a type bar which is horizontally movable endwise between them, whereby the type may be selected from either font and grouped in the required order in the type bar to form words. The slidable bar is mounted in a frame which is vertically movable that the grouped type in the bai' may be inked and impressed on the required envelop or sheet oi paper. It is an object ot' the present invention to provide a simplified and compact structure embracingthe above-described characteristics, and which is light in weight,
- easily adjusted and manipulated, and which may be economically manufactured.
The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same bein illustrated in the wherein:

In this drawing, i2 represents the base of the machine, the upper side of which t'orms the platen on which is placed the paper to be printed and on which the type bar with the arranged type is pressed aiterit has been inked.
Slidable endwise in this base plaie are two pairs of reeurved supports 3, each pair being connected atthe bends by a distance piece 5. These support two parallel type font members 4. The supports 3 are endwise slidable in the type font members f1 as well as in the base 2, tween the end bends varied to suit the width of the paper or envelops which it is desired to print.
The detachable type members 6 have a shouldered lateral reduction in their thickness and the type fonts 4 are notched, as at 8to receive them, the type being directed downward and a corresponding indicating letter shown on the upper exposed end.
The depth of the notches 8 of the type fonts are adapted to receive three or more type as may be found convenient, and are directed toward one space between to receive the endwise mov able type bar l0 which is notched to correspond with the notches of the type fonts.
The type font members 4 are connected together at the ends and are maintained the required distance apart, by members 11 which also form Slideways for a vertically movable type bar frame composed of two side members 12, a cross-handle 13 and between the lower ends of the side members 12 light bars 14 which are parallel in the same vertical plane. The ends of the lower bar 14 are supported from the bottoni of an open frame 15 secured to and projecting below the ends of the side members 12 so that the type bar l0, lengthwise grooved to rit the adjacent edges of the parallel bars 14, may be moved endwise through either end between the bars 14.
This type bar frame 12, 13 and 1/1 is connected by flexible lines or tapes 19 to spring controlled reels 16, whichv are rotatably mounted on axles 17, which are supported in brackets 18 secured to the ends of the type font men'lbers 4 so as to support the reels just outside the slidewa'ys of the members 1l. The type bar frame may thus be moved downward from the upper limit of its movement to impress the type in the type bar, on the platen 2, and the springs-will restore it to the upper lilnitwhich is its normal position.
[Iorizontally movable in slots 20 in the lower part ot each type font member 4 is an inking pad 21 which may be projected across the downward path of the type provided another with parallel4 bar 10, and withdrawn from such path, by levers 22 pivotally connected at 23 to each end of the inking pad and fulcrumed on each end of a rod 24 extending from end to end of the back type font. These levers 22 are bent over the spring reels 16 and at the front of the machine are connected to a cross-rail 25 extending between them.
Slidably mounted to move endwise on the rod 24 to the ends ef which the ink pad levers are mounted, is a member 26 projecting across and above the two type fonts and supported in a substantially horizontal position by a downwardly projecting portion 27 which is endwise movable along a rod 28 parallel to and beneath the rod 24. The horizontal portion 26 of this member is lengthwise slotted to receive the 'downwardly projecting point 29 of a selecting member 30 which is supported above the horizontal portion 26 so as to be endwise movable in the free end of a light'spring 31 secured to and projecting forward from the end of 26 which is adjacent to the rod 24.
The point of the selecting member may thus be drawn from end to end of the slot in the member 26 and may be pressed down against the light resistance of its spring 31 into engagement with a type in either type fonts 4 and transferthat selected type from its notch 8 of the type font into the required notch of the type bar 10.
The paper is fed onto the platen 2 bctween a roller 32 which is rotatably mounted in the platen and a roller 33 rotatable in bearings resiliently supported thereabove, and 011e of these rollers, the upper one" in this case, has a pinion 34 secured on it,the teeth of which mesh with those of a small gear wheel 35 rotatably mounted in the same bearing support on the shaft of which wheel is secured a milled head by which the wheel may be rotated.
Across the end of the base plate or platen 2 is mounted a similar pair ot' rollers 38, 39 rotated in a similar lnanner by a milled head 40, by which roller the paper may be laterally adjusted.
In use, the type being in the type fonts 4,
lthe movable type bar 10"s slidably introduced between the bars 14 of the vertically movable frame 12, 13, 14, and endwise moved between the fonts to bring successively the notches ot' the type bar opposite the notches 8 of the type of the various letters as required, and by means of the selecting member 30 of the type are transferred from the fonts into the notches of the type bar. Vhen the required `line or lines of type are arranged in the type bar 10 the inking pad 21 is moved across and between the two type tout members, and the frame 12, 13, 14 in which the type bar 10 is carried is pressed down ti. ink the type. The bar 25 is then pressed down to \\'ithdraw the inking pad and the type bar frame is then pressed down to impress the inked type upon the paper which has been adjusted on the platen 2.
It is of course understood .that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction of the above specifically described embodiment of this'invention without departing from the spirit thereof, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a hand-printing machine, the combination of a type font having open notches adapted to receive type therein, a frame vertically movable in front of the open notches of the type font, a type bar endwise movable in the frame in front of the open notches of said font and being provided with correspondingly formed open notches to receive type from the font, an inking pad movable across the plane of. the vertical movement of the type bar, and a platen arranged beneath the type bar to receive paper adapted to be impressed.
2. In a hand-printing machine, the c01nbination of a fixed type font having open notches therein adapted to receive type, a vertical and endwise movable type bar arranged in front of the open notches of the font and provided with correspondingly formed notches adapted to receive type from the font, and a platen arrangedbeneath the type bar for supporting the object to be impressed.
3. In'a handprinting machine, the combination of opposed type fonts arranged substantially in parallelism and provided upon their inner opposite faces with open notches adapted to receive type therein, a type bar arranged between said fonts and having open notches inits opposite sides corresponding to the notches of the fonts to receive type therefrom', means for vertically moving said type bar, and a platen arranged' beneath the type bar adapted to support the object to be impressed.
4. In a hand-printing machine, the combination of opposed type fonts provided with open notches in their inner opposite sides, a longitudinally shiftable type bar arranged between said fonts and having correspondingly formed notches in its opposite sides to receive type from the Jfont, a frame vertically movable between the type fonts for supporting said type bar, an inking pad movable across the vertical path of the type bar, and a platen arranged beneath the type bar to support the object to be impressed.
5. In a hand-printing machine, the combination of a base forming a platen adapted to receive an object to be impressed, means for feeding the paper across the platen, means for laterally adjusting the paper thereon, opposed type font-s supported above said base and adapted to carry type, an ink.-
