CONTAINER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, rate.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD GERHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
'My invention relates to sifting top containers for holding and dispensing powdery or pulverized substances, such as toilet powder and the like.
Containers or cans of this general class usually embody a permanent top or head which is provided with a number of perforations, such head being surmounted by a similarly perforated cap. Usually these caps either rotate or else slide on the head, the purpose of course in both instances being to move the perforations of the cap into and out of registration with the perforations of the head to sift the contents from the container and to seal the latter, as may be desired.
As contradistingnished from the rotary cap and sliding cap containers both types of which are relatively expensive when considered in connection with the low cost at which the goods must be sold to the ultimate consumer, i employ a swinging or oscillating cap which in addition to adequately and ethciently performing the functions for which it is intended, may be manufactured .in great quantities very cheaply, either by stamping or otherwise. This cap may also be assembled in operative relation 011 the container head without the use of rivets, pins, springs, and other devices which not only increase the difficulty and cost of manufacture, but also frequently impede the op eration of opening and closing the container by either becoming clogged with the powder, or getting out of order.
Another ob ject of the invention is the provision of a sector-like cap preferably made from a single blank of metal having formed integral therewith, as during the stamping operation, certain parts, such as a small tongue or tongues which serve to pivot the cap when engaged with a novel form of head with which such cap cooperates. Such cap is further equipped with means, preferably integral therewith, for limiting and determining the path of its swinging movement over the head.
Furthermore I propose to provide a sifting top container embracing the features of simplicity, neatness and convenience, coupled with economy in the cost of production.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a container embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the cap thereof.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a portion of the container top and showing the con struction of the perforated head section thereof.
Fig. 4, is a top plan view showing the cap as swung or shifted to position to bring the perforations thereof into registry with the perforations in the head to permit the escape of the contents. r
Fig. 5, is a similar view but showing the position the cap assumes when the container is sealed against the escape of the contents.
Fig. 6, is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on line 6-6, of Fig. 4:.
Having reference to the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the body of the container which in the present instance is in the nature of a can of elliptical cross-section, the top B of which includes a head C. This head, as shown, is preferably approximately sector-like in general outline and embrace a relatively long arouate end wall 1, and a relatively short arcuate end wall 2, these end walls being connected by the vertical side walls 3 which converge toward the shorter end wall 2. The longer end wall 1 is formed with a relatively deep horizontal groove 4 the walls of which preferably taper toward the bottom of such groove, the latter extending throughout the wall in which it is formed. Likewise, the short end wall 2 is formed with a horizontal recess or groove 5, these two grooves 4: and 5, preferably lying in substantially the same horizontal plane, about midway of the walls. The walls of the head are surmounted by a top wall or head plate 6, having a series of perforations 7 formed therein, these perforations being preferably arranged in arcuate rows extending across this plate 6.
The cap for the container is designated as an entirety by the letter D and is preferably made from a single blank of metal by stamping or. other manufacturing process. This cap embodies a sector-like top plate 8 having arcuate rows of perforations 9, formed therein which are adapted to be confine myself to all the precise details herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may be made without departing from the-spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the apmoved 1nto and out of registration with pended claims.
the perforations of the head plate 6, as when sifting the powder and sealing the container, respectively. The total area of the top plate 8 of the cap is greater than that of the head plate 6, for while such plate 8 is of substantially the same width as the head plate 6, at its narrower end, itgradually widens in greater porportion until at its wider end it is of greater cross diameter than the head plate, this of course being to allow the shifting or swinging of the cap to open and close the perforations in the head. Such cap is provided with a preferably continuous marginal skirt or flange including the two side sections 10 joined at one end of the plate by the wide end section 11 and at the opposite end of the plate by the narrow end section 12. The wide end section 11 of the flange is slightly curved in cross section with its lower edge bent or rolled inward to movably engage or fit into the groove 4: of the wall 1 of the head C, the adjoining end portions 13 of the side sections 10 being slightly enlarged at this junction with this end section 11. The short end section 12 of the cap, skirt or flange is preferably formed with small tongues 14: which are crimped or bent inwardly into the groove or recess 5, when the cap is assembled on the head so as to constitute a pivot or bearing point about which the cap may swing, and this swinging movement of cap across the head in both directions is limited and determined by the side sections of the skirt or flange contacting with the adjacent side walls'of the head.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawing the construction and manner of employment of the invention will be readily apparent. The completely assembled container is shown in Fig. 1 and when it is desired to use the contents it is only necessary to grasp the article inone hand and press with the thumb or a finger against one of the sides of the cap to move the latter to the position shown in Fig. 4 thus bringing the perforations of the cap in registry with those of the head. to permit the powder to be sifted from the container. The reverse action or shifting the cap in the opposite direction or to the position shown in Fig. 5 will throw the two sets of perforations out of registry and thus securely seal the container against the escape of the contents.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred embodiment of this invention I wish it to be understood that I do not Nhat I claim is 1. A container havinga sector-like head including verticalconverging side walls and vertical end walls, and a sector-like perforated cap overlying the top wall of the head and adapted to. swing relatively thereto, said cap being of relatively greater area than said head and having depending con verging side flanges adapted to contact with the side walls of thehead to limit the swinging movement of the cap relative to the head. 7 j
2. A container having an elevated sectorlike head including vertical side and. end walls and a perforated top wall, one of said end walls having a groove therein, and a sector-like perforated cap surmounting the top wall of the head and having an end flange seating in the groove in the end wall of the head whereby said cap is connected with the head while capable of being shifted relative to the latter to bring its perforations into and out of registry with those of the head:
3..A container having a head including vertical side and end walls and a perforated top wall, the end walls of said head having grooves formed therein, and a perforated cap overlying the top wall of the head and having a depending flange'provided with a tongue lying in the groove of one [of the end walls of the head to permit swinging movement of the cap relative to the head,
said cap also having a depending flange provided with a lower inturncd edge adapted to movably seat in the groove of the other end wall of the head.
4. A container having a head including vertical side and end walls and a perforated top wall, the end walls of said head having grooves formed therein and ,a perforated cap overlying the top wall of the head and having a depending flange provided with a tongue lying in the groove of one of the end walls of the head to permit swinging movement of the cap relative to the head, said cap also. having a depending flange provided with a lower inturned edge adapted to movably seat. in the groove of the other end wall of the head, said cap also having depending side flanges adapted to contact with the adjacent side walls of the head to limit the swinging movement of the cap relative to the head.
5. A container having a sector-like head including vertical converging side walls and vertical end walls, each of said end walls having a horizontally disposed groove therein, anda perforated top wall, and a perforated cap overlying the top wall of the head and of relatively greater area than said head said cap having a depending flange at one end thereof provided with a series of inturned tongues lying in the groove of one of said end walls of the head, the opposite end of said cap having a depending flange provided with an inturned edge portion lying in the groove of the other end wall of the head, said cap also having depending side flanges adapted to contact with the side walls of the head to limit the movement of the cap relative to the head.
6. A container having a sector-like perforated head, and a sector-like cap of greater area than the head surmounting the latter said cap having a depending member en gaging an end wall of the head and c0nstituting a pivot permitting movement of the cap relative to the head while connecting such cap with the head whereby said cap may be swung across the head to bring its perforations into and out of registry with the perforations of the head.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
