UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.

' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
' a lication 111611 June 21, 1915, Serial No. 35,472. Renewed .1'uly e, 1917. Serial No. 179,097.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL WoLrr, a subect of Hungary, residing at Pittsburgh, in
the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Imiprovements in Window Chairs or Scafiolds,
of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description, reference being had to the acco'mpaying drawings, which form part. of
this specification.
This invention ,1s a window chair or scaffold for supporting the worker when cleaning windows-or painting or in doing similar work. As such a device I provide a structure that overlies the window sill and clamps to the frame of the window, through the provision of means that is readily operable and renders the device adjustableto frames of various sizes. Furthermore,-I aim for simplicity and lightness of weight that 1 permits of the mechanism being folded into a compact form for convenient transportation frbm'window to window or in shipping.
1 will now describe my invention so that others skilled in: the art to which it apper tains maynnderstand and construct the same, it being premised however that certain .-changes maybe made in the construction shown and described without, departing from my invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan .view of a window chair embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same.
The numeral 2 indicates a base board or platform of-the chair, along the side edges" of which are guide rails 3 over which slidea plurality oftransverse. straps 4 and 5 that form part of an under frame 6 [which is longitudinally 'shiftable'with respect to the downwar ly and transversely of the for ward end of'thebase member-2, as clearly shown, and preferably provided at this point with a covering. of, rubber or other suitable paddin to prevent marring of the wood.
work 0 the window frame. The side rails 3, which fasten to the base board 2 at suit able intervals, as at 11, extend'rearwardly a o g said board and may be provided with stops or shoulders. 12 to limit the backward travel of the frame 6. A back 13 comprisin vertical membersli and the'tr'ansverse pane or rest board 15, has pivotal'supporting connection with the frame 6, as at 16. This pivotalponnection is-effected by means of the block members 17 carried by the verticalmembe"rs 14, which block members carry a pivot that passes through the eye portions 18 formed in the ends 0 beyond the transverse member 5. Leadingfrom the vertical members. 14 of the back to the transverse member of the cross strap 4, at the ends thereof and pivotally connected at said points are side braces or arms.20
having a one way hinge or joint 21. As
shown in Fig. 3, a central strap member 22 extends from the mounting 23 of'the screw feed 7 to a cross piece or strap 24:, while a transverse reinforcing strip 25 is carried at theupper rear end of'the platform or base 2.
. These members 22, 24 and 25serve to take up and conveniently distribute the strains and stresses of the device. 4 I
The lower ends of the vertical members 14g of the rest or back 15 each terminate in afoot or boot 26, which is covered with a suitable padding 27 This foot or boot cooperateswiththe depending foot '9 for clamping the. device in position over a win dow sill. By breaking the arms 20 of the back or rest the vertical members 14; may
1 be pivotally shifted so as to retract the foot.
. the fiat strap member 19 at 'a point where said strap extends portions '26 to a position-where the device can be readily placed over the Window sill,
after which the bracing arms 20 may bestraightened, so as to bring the backinto the normal-position shown and the boot into "cooperating clamping position with the foot 9., against-the outer face of the window frame or sill on which it'iss up'ported.
It will of course. be understood that by means of the screwfeed the desired adjust: ment of the foot members .26 relatively to the inner clam ing foot 9, may be obtained.
After this adjustment is once'determined,- the device may be readily applied and removed from the window frame by-manipu-' lation of the side armsor'brace's 20," as will be'clearly' understoodf It will be seen that in such adjustment through the screw feed 1 7, the whole under framefi moves lengthwise of the base board 2, 'and that consequently the relative angular position of the back re t'and the sidearms 2Q'with'resp ct to the base piece 2 is never varied. Furthermore, the construction permits-of the maxi mum strength through the i1se of flat strap material which is easy to Work into the form shown, resultin in a device'that is not'only light in Weight u t also inexpensive to manufacture. v
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. In a device of the character described,
' the combination with a base piece having a depending forward clamping foot, a frame member carried by and longitudinally shiftable with respect to said base piece, means for positively shifting said frame, a back rest pivoted to said frame and having a lower clamping foot, and hinged side braces extending from said back rest to said frame,
substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base piece, having a depending forward clamping foot, rail members at the sides of and-carried by said base piece, a frame member carried on said. rails and, longitudinally shiftable with .re-' spect to. said base piece, means for posi-v 'tivelyshifting said frame, aback rest pi'voted to said frame and having a lower]- cl'ampin'g foot, and hinged-side bars extending from said back rest to said frame at a point forward of the pivot of said frame and rest, substantially as shown and described.-
3. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a base piece having" a depending forward clamping foot, rail members mounted along the side edges of said base piece, a frame carried by said rails and disposed beneath the base piece andlongitudinally shiftable on said rails,
a feed screw carried by said base piece and provided With a crank handle and engaging saidframe for moving the same on the rail members, a back rest pivoted to'said frame and having a loiver clamping foot, and
hinged side bars-extending at an angle from said back rest to the forward end of said frame, substantially as shown and described.
.4. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a base piece having a depending. forward foot, rail members -mounted along the side edges of said base transversemembers along the rails, a backrest pivotallysupported by one of said trans-- verse members, and hinged side bars ex-.' tending from the back rest at an angle to said other transverse member, substantially as shown and described.
