Description

J. HOFFMAN.
PACKAGE TIE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE I2. 1917.

INVENTOR WITNESSES a/upifp I: ATTORNEY JULIUS HOFFMAN, OF HERMANN', MISSOURI.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Application filed June 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUs HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermann, in the county of Gasconade and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved package tie for use in tying packages of mail matter and also other packages, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of'this character for use in connection with a cord and by means of which a package may be readily tied without the necessity of tying a knot in the cord and may be also readily released, so that the tie fastener may be used successively on different packages and for an indefinite length of time.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan of a package tie constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective View of the same in opened, cord releasing position.
My improved package tie comprises a main member 1 and a jaw 2 which is pivotally mounted on the main member as at 3. The main member has a headed stud 4 projecting therefrom, on the outer side, at a point near one end. Said end has an openin 5 by means of which one end of a cord 6 1s attached. The main member is provided on the side which is opposed to the jaw with a recess 7 and a shoulder 8 at one end of said recess. The main member is preferably made of any suitable material and is preferably approximately elliptical in form, as shown.
The jaw member is also preferably made of sheet metal and is preferably approximately semi-elliptical in form. At the free end of the jaw is an opening 9 to permit a card to be attached thereto and the jaw is also provided, on the outer side, with a headed stud 10.
To use the package tie for securing a package of mail matter or the like the same is placed on one side of the package near the Specification of Letters Patent.

center, the cord is passed around the package endwise and drawn tightly and also around the headed stud 4 and is then passed transversely around the package and arranged across the jaw, the latter being initially open. The cord is then passed around the stud 4 and drawn to the desired tension and is secured by closing the jaw so that the cord is gripped between the body and the jaw, as will be understood. To undo the package the cord is first disengaged from the headed lugs and the jaw opened, thus releasing the cord.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a package tie of the class described, a body member having a headed stud and also having means for the attachment of a cord to said body member at one end, and a jaw pivotally mounted on said body member at a point near the opposite end of the latter, said jaw being movable toward and from the body member and to arrange the same when closed in over-lapping relation thereon, the said jaw being also provided near its free end with a headed stud for engagement by the cord.
2. In a package tie of the class described, a body member having a headed stud and also having means for the attachment of a cord to said body member at one end, and a jaw pivotally mounted on said body memher at a point near the opposite end of the latter, said jaw being movable toward and from the body member and to arrange the same when closed in over-lapping relation thereon, the said jaw being also provided near its free end with a headed stud for engagement by the cord, the said body being provided on the side opposed to the jaw with a recess for the reception of the cord.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JULIUS HOFFMAN.
