To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HENRY G. BRIEL, a citizen of the United States, and resident ofOttawa in the county of La Salle, n the State of I1linois,-have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Safety- Valves, of which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in valves and more particularly to an improved type of safety valves for use in connection with gasolene tanks and the like. I
The primary object of my invention is to provide an automatically operable valve for use in connection with gasolenetanks and the like whereby to permit escape of gaso lene vapor or the like when the pressure of such vapor rises above a predetermined strength.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bell or cap for use in connection with my improved safety valve whereby to prevent objects becoming engaged with the valve rendering the same inoperative, or when the valve is buried to prevent ingress of moisture and the like. It is well known to those skilled in the art that at the pres ent time gasolene storage tanks are placed 1 beneath the ground and the gasolene, when being sold, is pumped from the tank for use by the consumer. Vent pipes are used in connection with these tanks but great difiiculty is experienced in keeping moisture and dirt or the like out of the tank. It is therefore, a further object of my invention bell or cap as hereinbefore mentioned for housing the valve.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved automatic safety valve will appear from the fol lowing detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a valve and protecting casing embodying the improvements of my invention;
Fig. 2- is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a similar vlew taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the body of a gasolene storage tank or the threaded engagement therewitl'i asindicated at 3. The vent pipe 2 is enlarged at its upper end for threaded engagement as at 4.- with the neck portion 5 of a hell 6. The protecting bell 6 is preferably sen'ii-spherical in configuration being provided with a. plurality of exit openings '7 at the upper end thereof. The main outlet openings are designated 8 and are locatedin a retaining portion 9 of said bell adjacent the lower end thereof. The'principal object of the open ings 7 is to insure the escape of any gasoline vapor which might collectat the top of the bell. A valve 10 connecting with the outlet pipe as at 11 serves to permit ingress of air to the tank when the contents thereof are being withdrawn.
The valve means of my invention includes a disk-valve 12 having a stem 1-3 extending downwardly therefrom and operable in an opening provided in the enlargement 14 carried by the transverse bar 15 extending diametrically of the outlet pipe 2. A seat 16 is provided on the upper end of the outlet pipe 2 to accommodate the valve 12 when in closed position. A plurality of inwardly extending lugs 17 formed on the neck portion 5 of the bell 6 serves to limitthe upward movement of the valves.
In operation it will be seen that as the pressure of gasolene vapor rises in the storage tank the valve 12 will be raised from its seat permitting such vapor to pass out through the pipe 2 into the bell 6, the bulk of the vapor passing through the openings 8 to the outside atmosphere. When the pressure has been relieved the valve will automatically seat itself in closed position by gravity. It will be seen that when drawing the gasolene from the supply tank it is necessary that the space behind the gasolene be supplied with air to prevent generating a vacuum. For this purpose the valve 10 has been provided, this valve permitting ingress of sufficient air to prevent the generation of such vacuum.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that I may make such changes in said structure as cluding an outlet pipe, a threaded enlarge-i ment formed on said outlet pipe, a protecting bell in threaded engagement with said enlargement and having a plurality of vent openings therein, said bell being provided with outlet openings, means associated with the outlet pipe to permit ingress of air to the tank, a valve seat provided in the upper portion of said enlargement, a disk valve adapted to be seated on said valve seat, and means associated with said enlargement and. disk valve to guide the same into engagement with the valve seat.
2. A device of the character described in.- cluding an outlet pipe, a threaded enlargement formed on said outlet pipe, a protecting bell in threaded engagement with said enlargement and having a plurality of vent openings therein, said valve being provided with outlet openings, means associated with the outlet pipe to permit ingress of air to the tank, a valve seat provided in the upper portion of said enlargement, a disk valve adapted to be seated on the valve seat, a bar extending transversely of said enlargement, the bar being provided with an opening intermediate its ends, a stem mounted on the disk valve adapted to slidably engage the opening provided in the transversely extending bar, and a plurality of inwardly extending lugs formed on the valve adapted to limit the upward movement of the same.
