Beit knownthat I, HARRY Gr. BALTHASAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combination Valve Controls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention applies the principle of a combination lock such as used in safes, vaults, and the like to prevent the operation of internal combustion engines, and provides means therefor. It is intended especially to prevent theft, misappropriation, or misuse of motor vehicles and boats, aeroplanes, and the like.

Upon the instrument-board 1 or at an other convenient or suitable place is mounted the combination dial 2, which is revoluble in both directions alternatelyby means of the knob 3, as is common in such constructions when used in safes and the like.
Referring first to Fig. 4, a plate 4. is placed between the combination dial and the instrument-board l with a fiat spring 5 fastened thereto at 6, the said spring having a pointer 7 adapted to engage notches 8 and 9 on the inner side of dial 2, which notches are shown in Fig. 5. Notch 9 is of especial depth. Thus, when dial 2 is rotated, the operator will notice the entrance of pointer 7 into each of the notches 8 and will thereby be able to count the combination, but upon finishing the working of the combination will know'by the feeling that the pointer 7 has seated in the deeper notch 9. The combination being thus indicated to the operator by the feeling of pointer 7 riding over notches and the indication by the deeper notch- 9 of its having been completely worked keeps the secret of the combination, as it is impossible for any one sitting along side the operator to know what the combination is, as there is nothing visible on the exterior of the dial that will allow such observer to follow the working of the combination.
In the construction shown in Fig. l, the spring 10 is attached by` screw 11 to arm 12 of plate 13, and the pointer 14 on spring 10 operates through an opening 15 in arm 12 to engage notches 8 and 9 (as described in connection with Fig. l) on the reverse or inside of dial 2.
The face of dial 2 may, if desired, bear spaced marks which may coincide with the notches upon the reverse side shown in Fig. 5 or misleadingly placed not opposite the same, or the face of the said dial may be unmarked, inasmuch as the real working of the combination will not be by sight, but by the feeling of the pointer 7 (in Fig. Ll) or pointer 14: (in Fig. 1) riding into and out of the notches on the reverse side of dial 2.
Shaft 16 (the main part of which is not shown in the drawings) is a flexible shaft for operating the lock and valve, and shaft 17 is a non-flexible shaft for the same purpose in a different type of machine.
Referring to Fig. et, a bushing 18 having a collar 19 passes through the instrumentboard 1 and is screw-threaded at 2O to receive the screw-threaded cap 2l. having the collar 22. The bushing 18 and the cap 21 are kept from rotation by the set-screw 23. A pintle 24 having a flattened end 25 to cooperate with the flattened end 2G of shaft 16 is rotatable by knob 3, which simultaneously rotates dial 2, and collar 27 fastened to pintle certain parts when the butterfly valve 29 isY closed.
Valve 29 is mounted on rod 30 and adapted to rotate therewith, the said rod passing through a hole or bore 31 in plate 32, and one end of which red seats in socket 33 in the said plate 32, the said rod thus extending across hole 34 in plate 32.
Plate 32 is located between the carbureter 35 a nd the intake manifold BG in an internal combustion engine. The arrangement is the same if located at the exhaust manifold, as may be done. 1f located at the intake manifold the admission of gas from the carbureter is controlled by butteriy valve 29; if located at the exhaust manifold, the butterfiy valve 29 controls the exhaust of the products of combustion.
The valve 29 is opened by the rotation of rod 30, which is produced by pressure on the arm 37 by the lever 38, pivoted at 39 to the plate 40. The pressure of lever 38 on arm 37 is produced by the rotation of cam 41 by means of shaft 17 (or flexible shaft 16), the said cam 41 in its rotation (clockwise, as shown in the drawings) iinpinging upon lug 42 (or other suitable part) connected with lever 38. The lever 38 is rounded and beveled at its nose 43 in such manner as to slide easily on arm 37, which also is cooperatively shaped.
The cam 41 is fixed to rotate with shaft 17 (or shaft 16), while tuinblers 44 and 45 are loosely7 mounted in relation thereto. Pins 46 on the said cam 41 and tumblers 44 and 45 are adapted to engage with each other in such manner that when cam 41 is rotated clockwise the pin 46 depending therefrom will engage with the pin 4G projecting upwardly from tumbler 44, and the pin 4G depending from tumbler 44 will engage with the pin 4G projecting upwardly from tumbler 45. with the result that the said tumblers will be rotated. thereby removing slot 47 from alinement with lug 42. A partial rotation of cam 41 sul'lices to force lug 42 out of slot 4T, after which the pins 4G on cam 41 and tumbler 44 engage` whereupon the continued rotation of cam 41 causes the slot 47 in tumbler to become out of alinement withV lugV 42, and thereafter rotation of cam 41 in either direction causes slot 47 in tumbler 45 to be out of alinement with lug 42. `This movement consists in lirst forcing lug 42 out of slot 47 in both tumblers 44 and 45;
retaining the same by the periphery of cam 41 in such outwardly pressed position until slot 47 in tumbler 44 is moved out of alinement therewith, so that it will be held in its outwardly pressed positionby the periphery of tumbler 44 away from slot 47 therein; and then mixing up the combination by continued rotation or working it back and forth, which results in lug 42 being held out of slot 47 either by the high part of cam 41 or by the periphery away` from slot 4. of either tumbler 44 or 45 or both or of all threerof the said members. For the purposes just referred to, a protective cap 49 is provided, which, for pur-V noses of convenience, is attached by screw` 50 to plate 40, but which for real security is connected theretoand firmly held-between the carbureter and manifold 36 by bolts'V 51 that pass through holes 52 therein and holes 53 in a wing54of plate 40. ln some makes of machines, the said wing 54 may lie-- in the same plane as plate 40 and, in fact, be part of the same, but in a certain-type of motor-Vehicle the same must lie in a different plane, as shown in the drawings. The combination for any particular lock depends upon the positions of the pins 46 Lasarte v5V relative to each other on their respective members, and a plurality of holes `(not shown in the drawings) may be provided in the cam 41 and in each of the tumblers 44 and 45 allowing for the change ot' position therein relative to each other of the pins 46, so that when the combination ot any particular lock has been ascertained, as, tor instance, bya chauffeur, it can be easily changed by changing the pins 46.
Having thus described this invention, I hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as it is evident that many minor changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of this invention..
l claim:
l. A device of the character described comprising a plate adapted to be inserted in an engine conduit and having an opening formed therethrough adapted to register' with the bore of said conduit, an oscillatory valve disposed to close said opening, a rod by which said valve is carried, said rod being mounted. to turn in said plate, a crank extension upon the outer end of said rod, a swinging lever pivoted at one end, the crank extension ot the rod lying in the path of movement of the opposite end of said lever, means tending to turn the rod in one direction and permutation tumblers coacting With said swinging lever, at a point between its ends.
2. A device of the character described coingrising a plate adapted to be inserted in the length of an engine conduit, and having an opening formed therethrough adapted to register With the bore of said conduit, a valve adapted to close said opening, a rod by which said valve is carried, said rod being journaled in said plate, an integral eX- tension carried by said plate, and lying at an angle to the body portion of the plate, a lever pivoted to the face of said integral extension and swinging thereover, a crank extension upon the rod which lies in the path of movement of said lever, and a plurality of permutation tumblers mounted upon said extension and cooperating With said lever, as and tor the purposes set forth.

A device of the character described comprising a plate adapted to be inserted in the length oit an engine conduit, and having` an opening formed therethrough, adapted to register with the bore of said conduit, an oscillatory valve mounted in said opening, a rod by which said valve is carried, said rod being mounted to turn in said plate, a spring seated in a recess formed in said plate, and surrounding said rod and acting to turn said rod in such direction as to move the valve to open position, a crank extension upon the outer end of said rod, an extension carried by said plate and lying at an angle with respect to the body portion of said plate, lever mounted to swing over the face of said extension, the crank extension oit the rod lying in the path of movement of said lever and a plurality of permutation tumblers mounted upon said extension, and coacting` with said lever at a point intermediate its ends.
4. ln a device of the character described, the combination ot a stem, a cam and tumblers borne and rotatable thereby and each having means for engaging the next adjacent member, a lever oscillatable by the said members, a spring-pressed arm adapted to be actuated by the said lever, and a butteriy valve mounted upon a shaft bearing the said arm..

In a device of the character described, a valve so located as to control the passage of gas relative to the manifold ot' an internal-combustion engine, means for opening or closing the same, the said means consisting of a plurality of tumblers, movable means actuatable by the said tumblers, means tor actuating the said tumblers, each ot the said tumblers having a stud thereon tor engagement with another of the said tumblers, and one of the said tumblers being a cam adapted to actuate the said movable means, a protective casing for saidy tumblers comprising a pair ot' plates, one ot them having a recess and both plates having a substantially right-angled extension adapted for insertion between the manifold and an associated part, each of the said substantially right-angled parts vhaving an opening therethrough and one ot' the said plates containing the said valve in the said opening, and bolts adapted Jfor fastening said substantially right-angled extensions together and to the manifold and associated part.
7. In a device ot the character described, a valve so located as to control the passage o-l' gas relative to the manifold of an internal-combustion engine, means for opening or closing the same, the said means consisting ot a plurality of tumblers, movable means actuatable by the said tumblers, and
