Be it known {that I, Jon RAnnn, ,a citizen of the UnitedStates; residing at Belva, in thercoun'ty of Woodward and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following-is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.v
This invention relates to certain improvements in rail joints and it-isan object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby the meeting ends of rails may be readily and conveniently connected in assembled relation without the necessity of bolts and co-acting nuts.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved rail joint wherein fish plates co-act with the meeting ends of the rails and wherein said meeting ends of the rails rest upon a chair which serves to maintain the joint in assembled relation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved rail joint wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with a part in section illustrating a rail joint constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan with portions broken away of my improved rail joint as herein embodied; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As herein embodied the meeting ends It of the rails have co-acting therewith the fish plates 1 and 2- arranged at opposite sides of the rails and snugly fitting between the heads and flanges thereof. One of the plates as l is provided with a longitudinal series of openings 3 adapted to register with the openings it produced in the webs of the rails, The second plate 2 is also provided with openings adapted to register with the openings 3 and 4 hereinbefore referred to.
The plate 1 is wedge-shaped in cross section with the larger end disposed adjacent the flanges of the rails.
'Insertible through the registering openings 3, 4; and 5 are the headed shanks 6 and each of said shanks adjacent its free end is reduced to afford an annular shoulder 7.
P denotes a holding plate wedge-shaped in cross section with its thicker marginal portion disposed upwardly when the plate is in applied position. The plate P is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced and transversely disposed slots 8 having their lower end portions enlarged as at 9. In applying the plate P the free end portions of the shanks 6 are inserted through the enlarged portions 9 of the slots 8 and the plate is then forced downwardly. The marginal portions of the slots 8 will then engage the shoulders 7 and thereby cause the plates 1 and 2 to effectively co-act with the meeting ends R of the rails to maintain the same in assembled relation.
The lower marginal portion of the plate P is provided with an outstanding flange 10 which is adapted to be engaged by the inwardly directed flange 11 carried by a marginal portion of the chair 12. The chair 12 is inserted beneath the meeting ends of the rails in order to properly co-act with the holding plate P after said plate P has been properly assembled. The chair 12 is of such a width as to extend beyond the opposite sides of the meeting ends of the rail and is provided with the spike openings 14 which are adapted to vertically aline with the spike recesses or notches produced in the lower marginal portion of the fish plate 2. The spikes S disposed through the openings 14 and arranged within the recesses or notches 15 are of conventional type as are the spikes S which are adapted to co-act with the marginal portion of the chair 1?. provided with the flange 11.
While I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular use of my improved rail joint I do wish to say that I have found it of especial importance to employ the same in connection with portable trackways such as are employed in connectime wi h steam shovels or the like.

I claim:
