To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM 0. Mom, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Combined Coal and Gas Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to construct a combined as and coal range so that a single operating lever will control all of the dampers in order that the'oven of the range may be used with either section of the range. V
A further object ofthe invention is to provide means for operating the several dampers and to arrange said means so as to act as a guard for the gas valves to preventthem being turned when the dampers are shifted in position for the range to be used as a coal burning range.
' A still further object of the invention is toprovide a plate in the *bottom of the range which acts as a closure for the opening in the bottom of the range when the range is being used as a coal range, the plate acting as a deflector for the flame from the burners when therange is used as a gas burning range. y
In the accompanying drawings "Figure 1,-is a front View ofthe range illustrating my invention, showing the mechanism shifted so that the range can be used as a gas range;
Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the mechanism shifted so that it can be used as a coal burning range, the operating lever being shifted so as to prevent manipulation of the gas valves;
Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view through the oven' of the range with the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, is a sectional view through the oven of the rangewith thep'arts in the position illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5, is an endview of the range; and
Fig. 6, is a detached perspective view illustrating the deflecting plate and its opcrating mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of the range, which is of the ordinary type. Q'is the fire pot. 3 is the grate. i is the ash pit under the grate. 5 is theovenw 6 COMBINED COAL AND GAS RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd Jam, 15, 191%, Application filed May 26, 1916. Serial No. 100,038. I
is the top plate of the range having the usual openings therein. 7 is the flue between the top of the range and the to plate of the oven. 8 is the side flue and 9 is the bottom flue leading to the back flue 10 which communicates with the chimney. 11 is a pivoted damper forming communication with the upper flue 7 andthe back flue 10 when it is desired to have a direct draft from the fire pot to the stack without passing around the oven when the range is used as a gas range so as to carry ofl the waste gases which pass through the oven.
In the bottom plate is an opening 12 and directly under this opening are the two gas burners 13, in the present instance, and a pilot burner 14. At the front of the range is the gas supply pipe 15 having handled gas valves 16 for the two burners and for the pilot burner, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
17 is a heavy metal plate which, when in the raised position as in Fig. 3, acts a deflecting plate for the flames issuing from the burners and, when in the position illustrated in Fig. 4, it acts as a closure for the opening 12 so that the products of C0111- bustion from the coal passing around the oven from the fire pot will not escape under the bottom of the range but will pass to the back of the flue 10. The plate 17 may be lined with any suitable heat non-conductor if desired.
At each side of the oven are passages 18 through which the gases pass from the lower flue 9 into the oven when the range is burning gas, and in the upper portion of the oven are openings 19 which communicate witha damper box 20 in which there is a pivoted damper 21 which is opened when gas is used, so as to carry off any waste products of combustion from the oven to the back flue 10 as the damper 11 is also open.
22, 22 are dampers which are arranged to close the communication between the side flues 18 and the lower flue] 9 when, coal is used. 23 is another damper closing the communication between the side flue 8 and the lower flue 9 when gas is used, so that all of theproduct-s of combustion from the gas burner will pass intoand through the oven.
The deflecting plate 17 is pivotally mount -in the frame of the range.
shafts extends beyond the burner valves 16 ed on two crank shafts 24, 2%, shown in Fig. 6, and these shafts have their bearings One of these and attached thereto is the operating lever 25, .Figs. land 2. This operating lever is ofsucha length that when turnedto the position illustrated in Fig. 2, it will be located in front of the three "burner valves 16 and will prevent them being turned while the lever -is in its lowest positionybut when the lever is turned back tozthe positionillustrated in Fig. 1, the burner valves are exposed ,and can be turned. Thecranks of the sliattsare-so proportioned that when, the plate is elevated, as in Fig. 3, it is inthe proper position to deflect the flame from the burners and when in the lower position, as in Fig. 1, it will closethe opening 12 in the bottom-plate.
Qne of the dampers 22 is mounted on the same shaft 26 as the damper 23 and this shaft 26 has an arm 27 and the other damper 22 has an arm 28. and; these two armsare connected by a rod 29. Both the arms. andthe rod are on the outside of the range. The rod 29 extends to the sideoftherange and is attached to an arm 30-01? a; bell' crank lever 31.adapted.to a bracket-on the range, and .the arm 27 is connected, by a .rod 32 to thecrank shaft .24, so th-atwhen the operating. lever 25; is turnediit .shifts the dampers 22 and .23, as welLas the plate 17.
In order to operate the pivoted dampers 21 and 11 .at the UPPGIPM-ftOf thG range with the plate and the. otherdampers,;1 connect a rod v33 with the. other armfli of the bell crank lever and thisrod isconnected, in turn,-to an arm 35 attached to.the pivot of the damper 21, which extends-through the side plate. The upperend of therod 3.3 has a lug arranged to strike an arm 36attached to a. crank on the piw'ot rod 37 of the damper .ll and thisarm 36 is notched to engage a detent 38 projecting from the side of the range and which retains the damperrll in the position to which it is adjusted.
It will beseen that by the above construction, when the operating lever is in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, the, parts are shifted so that the range can be used as a gas range, the lever being clear oi'fthe burner valves so they can'be turnedto allow the gas to flow to the burner. The plate '17 is in the elevated position so that it will act as a deflector. The dampers 22 are raised so as to allow theproductsof combustionto enter the oven, andthe damper 21 and the damper 11 at the upper part of the-range are both shifted toxthe openposition to allow the productsof combustionto escape from the oven tothe stack, the damper 23-being in the closed position so as to prevent the products of combustion escaping .through the flue 8 and around the oven.
When the operating lever is turned to the position illustrated in F 2, it is in front of the burner valves 16 so that they cannot be turned, and the plate 17'is'i1i itslowest position, closing the bottom plate of the range; The-dampers 22 areclosed soas-to prevent any product of combustion-passing into the oven, as is also the damper 'The damper-23in'the side flue 8 is open. The damper 11 can be either opened orclosed, as desired, since it is independent of the other dampers. l Vlien the parts are in this position, coal can be used and the products of combustion can pass directly to the back; flue 10'when-the damper 11 is opened, and when the damper 11, is closedgthe productsot'; coinbnstion willpass throughthe flues 7, -8and around the: oven and to the stack 10.
