Application filed 1V'areh20, 1916. Serial No. 85,473.
To all whom t may concern;
Be 1t known that I, GEORGE LAwsox BAL- LARD, a subjectof the King of Great Britain',
residinglat Norristown, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new andA usefulImprovements in Dog Forms of Circular-Knitting h/Iach'ines, of which thet'ollowing is a specification. i y
Inl circular knitting machines having a needle cylinder and needle dial with dogs on thecylinder, engaging dogs on the `dial for holding these .parts in fixed relation-to each other, the fabric must bedrawn down` by the take up mechanism between the members of each pair of dogs, and against the resistance arising from the presence of the dogs thereon. Ordinarily in suclrmachines the dial post and dial and dial camare all supported by a yoke connected with the cam ring or carrier belonging to the needlecylinder and in case of wear of the cam carrier or its bearing in the nxed frame, in that type `of machine in which the cam carrier rotates,
the irregular movement or wabbling of the `carncarrier due to this looseness will displace' the needledial in relation to the needleicylinder, so that in machines adapted to make fine gage worknot onlyfwill ,the regular and even formation .of` the `loops `be affectedadversely but the irregular or wabbling movements of the dial in `relation to the cylinder willpcause the dogsof the dial to move or reciprocate in relation `to the cylinder dogs. thus subjecting the fabric to an undersirable rubbing action.` Furthermore with a worn cam ringer `bearing or one having considerable lateral play in its bearings in the fixed frame, there will result a displacement of the dial in relation to the cylinder when welts are being forced through between the dogs, lthe pressure ,being communicated directly` by the welt or extra thickness tc thel ,dial dogs `and thenceto the dial, the latter being free to ,be displaced because itis supported bythe cam ring which, as stated, may t loosely in its bearing, due to wear. u p
My improvement consists, in a. dog form of rib knitting machine,of means `for holding the dial against irregular or Wabbling movements, said means preventing displacement of the dial in relation to the-needle cylinder and preventing undesirable movement of the dial dogs in relation to the cylinder dogs.
In the drawings, A i Figure l is a sectional view with parts in elevation of one form of' thc machine.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the dial camcar-I rier with the connection for turning it.
.Fig 3 is a view similar to'lFig. 'l of another f'orm of the machine. i
In Figs. l and 2 the needle cylinder l is shown as fixed by screws, as at l", to the fixed baseor frame l". The needledial is shown at Q, the dial caincarrier at`3 and the cylinder cam carrier at i. The dogs between the cylinder and dial are indicated at a, b, these being of substantially ordinary form, one, a, being iixed to the needle cylinder and the other to the dial. It will be understood, however, that various forms of dogs may belused and these may be of fthe vibrating type adapted to open and 'close serially to permit `the fabric at times to pass freely between them. Whatever forni ot dogs may be used, it is important for the best eiifect that they be not affected by any irregular or wabbling movement of the dial, and on the other hand the holdingumean's for the dial should besuch that the dial itself will `not beaifected in its relation to the needle `cylinder by any undue pressure brought to bear by the fabric upon the dial dogs.
In carrying out the invention, therefore, I employ a fixed support or ring 13 above the dial, this being held rigidly on the fixed frame l by a plurality of standards 14. lVIounted in connection with and sustained by this iixed support 13 is a memberti.` This is held by the support 13 against displacement both vertically and laterally. It rests upon a ledge or ring Si secured to the fixed support 13, and it has a running fit with the said fixed support `and thelatter partly `cverhangs `the rotary member, and affords the upper bearing therefor.
This rotary member 6 may assume various forms but in the particular construction illustrated, itis in the form of a ring or plate. It is open for the passage of the yarn or yarns, one opening being shown` at 6a. 1
The dial post 'r' is `supported by this rotary member, said post extending upthrough an opening arranged centrally thereof, and having its upper screw threaded end receiving anut 7 by which the post may be ad- `iusted vertically.
The nut simply rests upon the upper face of the ring and it is fixed in adjusted position by a set screw 7b.
Thedial is attached to the lower'end of' the post by a screw 2, passingV througha boss n the bottom of the dial into the post,
and, as above stated, the dial post, together with the dial, vis held against movement -but in. the particular constructiomshown in Fig. l, a link 8 is connected'with the dial cam carrier or cap 3 by a screw 35.
'lhis lis located near the youter edge `of the` said dial vcap and the link extends in a direction substantially tangential to an arc struck from the center or' the dial'post, theouter end of said link 8 being; screw threaded and receiving nuts 37, by which a clamp 36 carrying saidlink may be fixed to the post 5, secured to the cylinder cam ring: This connection is such that any irregu` lar movement of the cylinder cam ring will not exert lateral or other pressure on the dial cam carrier, and consequently there will be no tendency to force the dial post with its dial out offproperl'axialrelation with respect to the cylinder and oscillation of the dial will'be prevented, aswell as movement oi one. dog on theother. vAny irregularity in the movement of the cylinder cam will be compensated `for by the tangential disposition. oi' the link 8, which instead of forcing the dial cap and post laterally will simply cause a slight change in a circuinferential direction in the position of the diall cap.
The connection to the plate 6 mayassume variousforms, but inthe particular construction, shown in Fig. 3, it consists ofva bar or post c screwed into the vdial cam cap or carrier and having its upper end enteringI an opening in the `rotary member 6, so that this member will move in unison with the dial cam carrier.
'It will now be observed that the connection for drivingthedial cam or cap, being of a character to compensate for irregularities in the movement of the cylinder cam to preventv lateral vstrain 'on the dial support or post,y and said support being sustained by the member G in connection with the fixed frame against tipping, wabbling, and against vertical or lateral displacement, the dial will be held in true relation tothe needle cylinder and there will be no undue movement of the dial dog in relation to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for `five cents each, -by address Washington, D. C.
cylinder dog, which would arise were the dial subjected to thev irregular movements ointhgnedl cylinder cam.
Instead of fixingl the'dialto'the dial post, under whichy conditionthe dial postti's held against rotation, I mayallow the dial post `to rotate, as showny in Fig. 3, and simply hold the Vdial in position by its dog. Inthis constructionthedial post is keyed at 7X to the rotating-plate 6, and thedial is supported by restingupon acollar 7b on the post, sa-idffcollar being secured thereto by the'screw 7C, shown in FigzQ. 1 Y
For driving the rotary .plate'G-in'nnison with the dial Vcam'carrier orcap, the post above describedmay be used, connecting the dial cam carrier with` said plate,"or, as shown at 9, an arm connected rigidly' with theu-hub ofthe plate Y6l loosely! engages the pint)a on the post35,lthe arm being forkedto receive the Vpin7A this-connection being in the natureot a compensatingoneto prevent any irregularitiesin the movement ofthe cylinderl caml from placing undue' strainl on the" dial post or plate V6.
lt will be understood that this arm 9 may shlOwn to make the ring-6 run in unisony with the dial cam. I1l
