CIRCULAR-KNITTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,906, dated May *7, 1889.
Application filed January 21, 1889. Serial No. 296,960 (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY OUETIN, of Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Circular-Knitting Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of knitting-machines in which the knitting-needles are carried on a rotary cylinder and receive a reciprocating motion by cams sustained stationary at the outside of the needle-cylinder.
The chief object of this invention is to afford access to the aforesaid cams, when required for repairs or adjustment, without necessitating the removal of the needles; and to that end my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the cam-rings and their support, with the upper portion of the needle-cylinder broken away to better illustrate the aforesaid parts. Fig. 2 is a ver tical transverse section of one side of the needle-cylinder, cam-rings, and support of the latter; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the aforesaid parts.

B represents the base or bed plate of the machine. I denotes the driving gear-wheel, which is arranged horizontally under the bedplate and has its hub fitted in a downwardprojecting cylindrical bearing, 13, formed 011 the bed-plate.
A represents the needle-cylinder, which is firmly secured to the hub of the gear-wheel I, so as to rotate with the same. One of the needles is shown at a in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The shank of each of the needles is provided with an outward-proj ecting portion, a, which engages at opposite ends with cams c 0, attached to rings P P, surrounding the needle-cylinder. By means of said cams the needles are caused to successively reciprocate during the rotation of the needle-cylinder, in the usual and well-known manner.
In order to afford ready access to the cams c 0, when required for repairs or adjustment, I support the camrings P P independently of each other, and preferably by dividing each of said rings into two or more segmental sections, as at d cl in Fig. 3 of the drawings,
and detachably securing the said rings, respectively, to the top and bottom of an annular plate, D, which surrounds the needle-cylinder, and is supported on standards 0 0, secured to and rising from the bed-plate B.
In order to allow the plate D to be raised or lowered, and thus support the cam-rings P P at the desired elevation to move the needles the desired distance above the needlecylinder during the rotation of the latter, I firmly attach to the top of the standards 0 C screw-threaded posts 0 O, and mount thereon nuts n n, which are formed with upwardprojecting cylindrical necks o 0, and with horizontal shoulders 0 0 at the bases of said necks. The plate D is provided with eyes e, which closely embrace the necks 0 0, while the said platerests on the aforesaid shoulders. Above the plate D are nuts n n, applied to the posts C O and bearing on top of said plate.
The cam-rings P P are preferably attached to the intervening plate D by means of screws 1' t', which are removable and thus allow either of the cam-rings P P to be detached from the plate D when desired.
Having described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the rotary needlecylinder, a plate arranged stationary around the exterior of said needle-cylinder, and the lower cam-ring, P, hung on said plate.
2. In combination with the rotary needlecylinder, a plate arranged stationary around the exterior of said needle-cylinder, and the lower cam-ring, P, divided transversely and hung on the aforesaid plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the bed-plate and needle-cylinder, standards rising from the bed-plate, a plate surrounding the needle-cylinder and supported on the standards, and the cam-rings P P, secured, respectively, to the top and bottom of-the aforesaid plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with the bed-plate and needle-cylinder, the standards 0 O, rising from the bed-plate, the screw-threaded posts 0' 0, attached to the standards, nuts 72 n on said posts, the plate D, supported between said nuts, and the cam-rings P P secured, respectively, to the top and bottom of the plate D, substantially as described and shown.
5. In combination with the bed-plate and needle-cylinder, the standards C O, rising from the bed-plate, the screw-threaded posts 0 0, attached to said standards, the nuts 02, provided with the cylindrical necks 0 and shoulders 0, the plate D, provided with eyes e, closely embracing the necks 0 and seated upon the aforesaid shoulders, the nuts n, applied to the posts-G 0 above the plate D, and
' the cam-rings P P, secured, respectively, to
the top and bottom of said plate, substantially as described and shown.
6. In combination with the bed-plate and needle-cylinder, standards rising from the bed-plate, the plate D, surrounding the needle-cylinder and supported on the aforesaid standards, and the cam-rings P P, composed of segmental sections secured to the top and bottom of the plate D, substantially as described and shown.
