DAVID STUART, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,347, dated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. Describing an Improvement in Cooking- Stoves, invented by DAVID STUART, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Improvements in Cooking-Stoves.
My invention relates to certain Improvements in Cooking-Stoves, for which Letters Patent No. 111,695 were granted to me on the 7th day of February, 1871, and my present improvements consist of a heating-chamber at the rear of the stove between the bottom-plate of the same and the elevated portion of the lower fine, as described hereafter; also of a certain detachable partition by which the oven can be separated into two compartments; also of a certain tray or shield for preventing loss of heat by radiation, and the scorching of the floor.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved cook-stove, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same. A is the top-plate of the stove B, the space devoted to the fire-place; O, the hearth; D D, the oven; E, the rear flue; F, the top flue; and G, the exit-pipe for the escape of the products of combustion to the chimney.
The above-mentioned parts are similar to those of ordinary flat-top cookingstoves, in which, however, the flue at the bottom of the oven is of an uniform level throughout, so that the portion of the oven beneath the fire-place is necessarily contracted in height and consequently its use for baking purposes is of a very restricted character. In mypatent No. 111,698, February 7, 1871, I remedied this defect by depressing the oven in front, as shown in the present instance, thereby increasing the height and baking capacity of the oven at the point where it had been so lowas to admit articles of the smallest class only; the lower flue, in-
stead of being straight as usual, was, in view of the above depression of the front of the oven, directed upwards at y, as in the present case. In my said patent the bottom-plate of the stove followed the course of the lower flue; but in my present improvement I make Another featureof my improvement is the introduction of a detachable sliding-plate, I, at a point where the elevated and lower portions of the oven meet, thereby dividing'the oven into two compartments, separate ovens being frequently required in baking different articles of diet. I also secure to the front and rear of the depressed portion of the oven ledges e e, in such a position that a grated shelf, J, placed 011 the ledges shall be on a level with the bottom of the elevated portion of the oven. WVhen an extended oven is desired the sliding partition is withdrawn and the shelf J is inserted, and an extended oven with a straight bottom is presented for receiving baking pans, dishes, &c. This part 'of my improvement remedies the defect in my former patented stove, the defect consisting in a permanent depression in the bottom of the oven which interfered with the proper disposal of the culinary pans, &c. The depressed portion of the lower flue at the front of the stove is brought much closer to the floor than usual, so that it becomes necessary to protect the latter from the effects of the heat to which it is subjected. This is usually done by nailing to the tloor a sheet of metal, but this I dispense with by introducing a tray, w, immediately beneath the depressed portion of the flue, this tray serving the twofold purpose of preventing loss of heat by radiation, and of preventing the scorching of the floor.
I claim as my invention--- 1. The heating-chamber a formed at the rear of the stove, between the bottom-plate of the same and the elevated portion of the lower flue, as set forth.
2. The combination of the elevated and depressed portions of the oven with the detachable partition I.
3. The tray ac applied to the bottom of the stove beneath the depressed portion of the lower flue, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subcribing witnesses.
DAVID STUART.
