UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CLEMENTINE D. RUTHERFORD, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-LID SUPPORTERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLEMENTINE D. RUTHER- FORD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Trunk-Lid Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of a trunk embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side View of the trunklid stay.
This invention has relation to trunks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a movable brace or stay for the purpose of supporting the lid of the trunk when raised. as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the body, and B the hinged lid of a trunk or clothes-chest. In one end of said body and lid recesses O O are formed by channeling the wood and covering the channels with boards D D or otherwise. D designates a curved brace pivoted within the recess 0 and entering the recess 0. This brace is constructed with a segmental longitudinal slot, E, having at its lower end a notch, e. A pin, F, passed through the end of the trunk passes also through the slot E.
When the lid of the trunk is raised its full height, the notch 0 falls over the pin F and prevents the lid from falling forward or backward. The curvature of the slot E allows of the more easy handling of the lid, the slot being concentric, or nearly so, with the are de' scribed by the lid in its movement.
The object of placing the brace within the recesses closed on the inside is to prevent injury to the contents of the trunk, as also to prevent the accumulation of obstacles which would render the movement of the brace difficult. The recesses are closed on the outside so that the brace shall not be noticeable when the trunk is closed; otherwise the appearance of the trunk would be unattractive.
I claim as my invention- The trunk, having the end recesses O O in the lid and base, the pin F, and the slotted brace I) having the upwardly-turned notch or recess 0 at the end of the slot, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed myname in the presence of two witnesses.
OLEMENTINE D. RUTHERFORD.
Witnesses THE. MALLABY, ANSON B. FULLER.
