N SAS ATNT @FFTGE RICHARD LESTEBVWILCOX, 0F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE WATER- BUBIY FARRELL FOUNDRY AND MACHINE COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTI- CUT, A CORPORATION OF CONN'ECTICUT.'
MEETHOI) FOB POINTI NG AND THREADING SCREWS, BOLTS, AND SIMILAR ARTICLES.
Original application filed August 23, 1915, Serial No. 46,941. Divided and i, 1916. Serial No. 110,518.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD LESTER WIL- oox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and Improved Method for Pointing and Threading Screws, Bolts, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a new and improved method for pointing and'threading .screws, bolts and similar articles, preferably with dies that may be economically constructed, be interchangeable, reversible, and attachable to any one of the many forms of thread rolling machines now in common use.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the method for pointing and threading screws, bolts and similar articles,
substantially as hereinafter described and lllustrated '1n the accompanying drawing,
7 wherein,
ecd
Figural is a plan view of a pair of thread rolhng dies by which my invention may be practlsed and occupying the relative positions assumed by them at the commencement of the thread rolling operation;
Flg. 2 is a perspective view of one of the lee;
Fig. 3 is a face view thereof with the knife plate removed;
4 is an end view thereof;
F g. 5 is a face view of the knife plate;
F g. 6 is an edge view thereof;
F g. 7 is an end view thereof; and
F1gs. 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are enlarged sectlonal vlews of the die and knife plate, taken respectlvely upon lines A, B, C, D and E of F1g. 3, with the blank shown in connection therewith.
Heretofore it has been the practice to produce a gnnlet point screw by pointing the blank 11 a lathe, shaving machine or similar mechanlsm, and afterward forming a thread thereon or by rolling a V groove in the shank of a blank having a head at both ends thereof, and then threading the walls of said V groove which thereby become the pointed ends of two bolts or screws, after which, that portion .of the shank between the V oove and heads is threaded, but in my unproved method the blanks ha ing a head Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan, 15, 1918:,
this application filed July 21,
at only one end. thereof are both pointed and threaded at one and the same time.
One form of means for practising my improved process is shown in the drawings, wherein the numeral 1 designates the fixed die and 2 the movable die, both being of substantially the same shape, differing only in their length, the fixed die being shorter than the movable die, and the former being provided with the guide notch 9. These dies are secured in the usual way in any one of the many common forms of thread rolling machines. Each die has an angular recess 3 in one side thereof and upon the adjacent faces are the knives 4, which are parallel with the side of the dies and terminate at their inner ends at the edge of the recess 3. The front face of each of the dies is provided with the usual thread rolling grooves 5 which extend from the outer edges of the dies to and upon one side of the knives 4: (see Fig. 2).
Secured within the recess 3 by a screw 6 is the knife plate 7, having the knives 8 at opposite ends and upon opposite sides thereof. The knife plate 7 is so shaped and designed that its position within the recess 3 may be reversed end for end, if desired.
The dies 1 and 2 are arranged relatively so that each of the knives 8 upon the knife plate 7 is in the same line as one of the knives 4 upon the opposite die and the ends thereof have substantial contact with each other.
In practice, the blank, designated herein by the numeral 10, is placed between the dies in the usual manner, its starting position being substantially shown in Fig. 8, and its alinement being determined by the guide notch 9. As the movable die 1 advances parallel with the face of the fixed die 2, the thread is rolled upon the shank of the blank and the knives 4 and 8 force their edges into the blank until a small portion of the end of the blank, designated herein by the numeral 11, is separated from the blank and drops from between the dies into a receptacle conveniently arranged to receive it and leaving the end of the blank pointed, substantially as shown in Fig. 11.
' The successive steps required to produce this result are shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, and the further movement of the movable ing screws only the minimum amount of material is wasted, and at least one complete operation, necessary in the old practice, is eliminated In minor details the means adopted to' accomplish my new and improved method may be altered, and I do not therefore limit myself to the detail mechanism as shown and described, except as the scope of the claims requires.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The process of providing a pointed article having a continuous thread of uniform pitch thereon consisting in threading the blank and simultaneously pointing the end and finally completing the thread of the blank on the end in a continuous operation.
2. The process of pointing the blank and rolling a thread of uniform pitch thereon at one and the same time, said pointing process cutting ofl a portion of one end of the blank during the threading operation and the thread on the shank and point being of uniform pitch for process, the pointing the blank and rolling a thread thereon consisting in rolling a thread upon the shank of the blank beyond the point and pointing the blank simultaneously therewith, and in a continuous operation completing the threading of the pointed portion in continuation of and having uniform pitch with the thread on the shank.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
- RICHARD LESTER WILCOX.
