Description
June 18, 1929. c. E. KEELER METHOD OF MAKING SCREWS Filed July 16, 1928 INVENTOR George E. Keeler I Patented June 18, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. KEELER,
OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO KEELER BRASS COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
METHOD OF MAKING SCREWS.
Application filed July 16,
A structure Which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 isa side view of a headed screw blank, the head being of the so-called oval type, other standard types of head being indicated by dotted lines.-
Fig. 2 is a side view of a screw blank with the head slotted.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a slotted screw blank with the plating thereon, the thickness of the plating being exaggerated for convenience in illustration.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a completed screw referred to by my-method.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated the steps of my improved method, the first step being the forming of the headed blank 1 shown in Fig.1. The second step is the slotting step, as 2. The third step is the plating, the plating being indicated at 3. The fourth step is the polishing which might by some be regarded as a part of the plating step. The polishing may be accom plished by tumbling or other well known methods.
The fifth or final step is the cutting of the threads 4 in the plated blank, this operation 1928. Serial No, 293,081.
leaving the shank portion 5 and the head portion 6 with the unbroken plating thereon.
It has heretofore been common. practice to complete the screw and then plate it with a result that the thread was dulled by the plating and also by the polishing. By my method, the threads are left with a clear-cut sharp edge.
The screw blanks maybe formed either by the solid die header or the so-called open die header, the open die header being less accurate in its work but more rapid and requiring the so-called shaving operation, that is, the flash or bur'must be trimmed off.
These steps of heading and slotting may be formed in the usual or any desired manner.
Screws may be rapidly produced by my improved methodand they are superior in that the plating may be highly polished and the threads are not dulled thereby.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The method of making screws consisting of forming the headed blanks, slotting, plating the entire blank, polishing, and threading, as successive steps.
2. The method of making screws consisting 65 of heading, slotting, plating the entire blank, and finally threading.
3. The method of making screws consisting of forming the headed blanks, slotting, plating the entire blank, and threading, as successive steps.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set In hand.
y GEORGE E. KEELER.
