Description
DAVIE LOOMIS & E. RHODES, Jr.
Improvement in Railway Rail Chair.
N0.125,310. V PatentedApril2,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT DAVIE LOOMIS AND ELIAS RHODES, JR, OF CLYDE, OHIO; SAID RHODES, JR, ASSIGNOR TO SAID LOOMIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY RAIL-CHAIRS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,310, dated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVIE LOOMIS and E. RHODES, J r., of Clyde, in the county of Sandusk y and State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Chairs; and we do hereby declare that thefollowingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a railroad chair, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing. in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my railroad chair. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 a perspective of the bars and screw-rod Our chair is made in two equal parts, A and B-that is, bisected longitudinally in the center and made to lit the sides of the rails, the under sides of the chair coming together under the rails. O'G represent the ends of the two rails, joined together by the chair A B, which is long enough to restupon two ties,. and thus connect the rails between the ties. The chair is fastened to the ties by spikes through notches a. a in its edges. v One, two, or more bolts, b I), pass through each rail and through the two parts of the chair to connect them together. They are further locked together by a device which we term a gripe, consisting of two bars, D D which are joined together endwise, as shown, by a tenon in oneand a slot in the other, so that they can be extended and contracted, as the case may require. 011 the'outer ends of the bars D D are formed hooks E E, respectively, which fit over and grasp the edges of the chair, and they are then contracted and fastened by a screw-rod, d, and nut e, as shown.
By taking oti' one side of the chair a rail can be removed without removing the other side of the chair.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. The within-described gripe, consisting of the two bars D D, connected substantially as described, provided with hooks E E, respectively, and fastened together by screw-rod d and nut c, all as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the longitudinally-bisected railroad chair A B, rails O 0, bolts 1) b, one or more gripes, formed of the bars D I) with hooks E E, and the screw-bolt cl and nut c, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
