Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 10, 1917. Serial No. 141,519.

To all whom it may/,concern Be it known that l, LEON JARUSZ, a citizen of the United States, residentof Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Floor-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in floor cleansing and scrubbing machines, and has as its principal object the provision of an apparatus which may be readily operated in the manner of a` carpet sweeper, and which comprises devices for moistening the surface passed over, collecting and dispensing of the accumulations and of thoroughly cleansing and brushing the Hoor or carpet.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing an embodiment of the invention.

The apparatus consists of a pair of tanks 10 and 11, located respectively at the front and center of the apparatus, the walls of which consist of a pair of uniformly shaped side supports having longitudinally disposed lower members 14 and integrally formed, front slanting raised elements 15 and 16, the sides being supported upon shafts 17 and 18 respectively at the front and rear of the apparatus. These shafts have mounted upon them wheels 20 and 21, provided with rubber tires adapted to engage with the surface passed over, causing the wheels to rotate as the apparatus is moved in either direction.

Aiixed upon the front axles 17 are spur gears 23 communicating rotary motion to a train of gears comprised of spur pinions 24, 25, and 26, two of which are fixed rigidly upon transverse shafts 28 and 29 rotatably mounted in the frames 14 and having upon them cylindrical brushes 30 and 31 the latter of which is at the extreme front of the apparatus, the gears 25 acting as idlers in transmitting motion.

The tank 10 is formed with compartments 35 and 36 respectively upper and lower the lower compartment being filled through a spout 37 with water or other cleansing solution which is dispensed normally through a plurality of minute perforations 38 formed at the front throughV the bottom wall, the openings being controlled by a slide or gate valve 39. n

Thus water may be dispensedy fromthe compartment 36 directly upon the brush 31 so as to meisten the surface over which the machine is passed, the brush acting to distribute the water, the action being followed by the second andl larger scrubbing brush 30, so as to loosen any adhering accumulations.

Mounted in the frame sides 15 arey shafts 40, 4l, and 42, carrying sprockets 44, 45, and 46, by means of which the chain 47 is driven through a pinion 43 on the shaft 42, the teeth of the pinion engaging with the gear 23.

Secured to the chain at regular intervals are a plurality of flexible Wipers 48, adapted to lick up the accumulations loosened by the brush rollers and at the same time convey them to the upper part of the machine, eventually disposing the detritus within the compartment 35 where it may be removed by raising the cover 49 at desired intervals.

Similarly, the tank 11 is provided with compartments 50 and 51, the latter being provided with a receiving spout 52, accessible through the removable cover 53 of the tank. The contents of the lower compartment 51 may be dispensed through minute perforations 55 controlled by the gate valve 56 so as to sprinkle the surface, which is further cleansed by the rubbing action of the flexible wipers 58 attached to the chain 59 carried by sprockets 60 61 and 62 mounted upon the shafts 63, 64, and 65.

A spur gear 66 is fastened upon the shaft 64 and driven through a gear 67 secured upon the shaft 18 whereby the chain and wipers are caused to operate, cleansing the surface and conveying the accumulations into the compartment 50, from whence it may be readily removed.

The apparatus is operated through the U shaped frame 70 pivotally engaged at the front of the machine and provided with an operating handle 71 by which the apparatus is manipulated.

Both tanks 10 and 11 have upon their eX- terior, clips 73 and 74, adapted to engage with angularly disposed projections 75 and 76 extending upward from the side plates 14 so that the tanks may be readily removed by raising the same when it is desired to clean them.

Obviously a carpet may be .cleaned without raising dust and it will be evident that solutions of a'n antiseptic na ture may be dispensed by the apparatus.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
