KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 8, 1918.
Application filed January 19, 1917. Serial No. 143,330.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Swan PAULSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heber City, in the county of Wasatch and State of'Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in knives, and relates particularly to the type of knives commonly called jack knives, pen knives, or
pocket knives, althoughit is to be under-.
stood that the invention is not limited in this regard.
The invention has for its primary object a practical, durable and eliicient construction of knife wherein the blade and handle are so connected together that they may be securely held in extended relation to each other without any danger of the blade accidentally closing upon the fingers of the user, and whereby also, by the same construction and arrangement of parts, the blade will be securely held nested in the handle and all possibility of accidental opening will be positively precluded.
And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this kind so as to render tlem'more useful and commercially desira le.
' \Vith these and other objects in view, as
. will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife embodying the improvements of my invention, the blade being closed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the blade open and with the latch member turned out at an angle to the handle.
Fig. 3 is an edge view with parts in section.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are fragmentary sectional side elevations illustrating the operation-of the device.-
Qorresponding and like parts are referred to 1n the accompanying drawing andfollowlng description by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the blade of my improved knife and 2 the handle thereof as a whole. The handle 2 embodies two side plates or bars 3, preferably formed of metal and connected together in a yielding manner. In the present embodiment of'the invention, although it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in this regard, the bars 3 are longitudinally channeled, as indicated at 1'1, and are formed of a single strip of spring steel doubled upon itself to form a connecting member 5, this construction and arrangement of parts permitting one of the side bars 3 to be pressed, by the hand of the user of the knife, toward the other bar, for a purpose hereinafter described. The blade 1 is formed with a shank 6 which is substantially square, as shown, whereby it may be securely held in between the channels 4 of the bars when they are pressed toward each other. 7 designates a pivot'pin for the blades, said pin being preferably riveted or otherwise rigidly secured at one end to one of the side bars 3 of the handle and extending at its other end through an aperture 8 formed in the other side bar, said pin being formed at this end with a transversely extending head9.
It is to be understood that the shank .6
of the blade 1 is apertured to receive thepin 7 whereby the blade is pivotally mounted thereon and connected to the handle, and also pivotally mounted upon the pin 7 onthe outer face of the apertured side bar 3 a swinging latch member 10 is mounted, said latch member being formed in its outer face witha transversely extending recess 11 designed to receive the transversely extending head of the pin 7 when the latch member is turned out into angular relation to the handle whereby in this position of the parts, the side bars 3 will be permitted by their spring action to move laterally one from the other, and release the head 6 so that the blade 1 may be turned either to an open or closed It will now be understood that upon turning the latch member 10 to a position in alinement with the handle, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, the jaws formed by the position.
ends of the channeledside bars, 3, will close upon the shank 6 of the blade 1 and securely hold th biaiinit-either a'jfiilly' opefiedT or closed position; Preferably'thelatchmem-' ber 10 is formed on its outer face with one or more longitudinal recesses"12 -to"*engagef with the head 9 when the latch member is in its operative position lying in alinementwith the handle; and preferably one end of" cated at g 1 1,, whereby; the 0f the member from its inoperative position in. angular relation to the handlein a dire'c' tion to, properly} close.th'e'flatch member against the handle will beffacilitated, as. the head easily rid'e'npon these inclined surfaces,1 l".,,
